Led by an incredible trio of talented performers, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers delivers a steamy look at a unique love triangle built on competition and friendship. Setting a story of love, betrayal, and rivalry against the backdrop of professional tennis made for a rather entertaining time as energy and tension was rallied back and forth. With a non-linear approach to the story, Challengers teases the audience with flashes of shocking moments that keep things unexpected and wildly entertaining. It’s sexy. It’s sensual. It’s seriously something special!

Boy Kills World is a rowdy and ridiculously great action comedy that genuinely excites with some unbelievable fight choreography. Though it’s not technically based on any previous works, this film is littered with influence from pop culture hits and knows how to adapt without ever seeming like imitation. To stand out from the crowd, the violence is taken to another level as brutal video game combat meets Rated-R comedy timed to perfection. It’s a big plus that Bill Skarsgard gets to show off how ripped he really is underneath the Pennywise suit and makeup, proving that he’s more than just those recognizable eyes.

Arcadian is a touching and entertaining family survival story set at the end of the world where terrifying creatures rule the night. As we often see during the end of the world, civilization and morality collapse as any remaining survivors fight to protect what little they have to keep themselves alive. When you’re protecting a family, the stakes are even higher as managing more than one person always proves to be difficult in any setting. Exploring those different family dynamics in this heightened setting makes for a frustratingly real portrayal of how I imagine most families would deal with looking out for one another.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver is an overall improvement upon the first entry that delivers more by way of emotion, action, and visuals. While I’m ecstatic to finally have the second half of Snyder’s story available, I won’t deny that it still only feels like part of something larger. In the weeks leading up to The Scargiver’s release, Zack Snyder has talked at length about the R-Rated, three-hour versions of Part One and Part Two that will include far more depth, violence, and even sex. While those versions exist on the Summer’s horizon, we’ll have to enjoy what we have now and know that some of the film’s story and pieces will be filled in more in the coming months.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a non-stop bloody action fest that combines outrageous laughter and unearthed historical context to create a Nazi-killing grand time! As is often the case when military and government records become unsealed, there’s tons of chatter online as people parse through documents to get to something juicy. Winston Churchill taking on a Nick Fury role (a la assembling the Avengers) in WWII was never on my bingo card, but the more I learned the more I was all in on telling this unique and important story.

The Greatest Hits explores both the sadness and the joy in the ability for music to transport people back to specific places in time. I’m certain everyone has experienced the phenomenon of putting on a song they love and feeling, if only for a moment, that they were back in time when they first heard it. Bringing a new dynamic to time-travel, The Greatest Hits takes things a step further and questions whether we can change our past while we’re back in it for that moment. The result is an above average romantic drama that focuses far more on the human condition than most films in its category.

Wicked Little Letters is a wickedly funny film that’s full of tons of heart and raunchy remarks to last you a lifetime. It’s only fitting that a posh and proper little town be the subject of lewd and sexual letters that send everyone into a panic. I’m not sure why it’s so satisfying watching prissy people react to offensive language, but here it’s handled so well and is even influenced by actual historical events. Make sure you bring a pen and paper with you while watching, because there’s a slew of insults and retorts that belong in everyone’s arsenal!

Sasquatch Sunset is an utterly bizarre slice of life film that closely observes a band of eclectic Sasquatch through a year in their messy and simple lives. Straight from the mind of someone who just took too many edibles comes a feature film from brothers David and Nathan Zellner that completely challenges the audience on every level. It’s exactly the kind of art-house indie filmmaking you expect to find at film festivals and while it certainly won’t appeal to broad audiences, I’m certain there’s a niche who will find a deeper meaning beneath all the Sasquatch’s boorish and repulsive behavior.

Civil War is an unflinching and unapologetic look at human nature and how the lines of politics and morals become blurred when people are left to fend for their own survival. I have zero doubts that this will be the most divisive film of 2024 for a plethora of reasons, most surrounding the fact that it’s uncomfortable to watch and might strike too close to home for American audiences. In a country that’s already fueled by political strife and on the verge of a controversial election, Civil War comes at a very tense time for the nation and doesn’t offer much by the way of comfort. It’s brutally honest in how it depicts humans and the collapse of society, so be warned because the violence and horror is not for the faint of heart.

Femme is a frightening and forceful look at revenge through the eyes of a young gay drag artist who's brutally attacked by a closeted homophobic psychopath. Leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination, this film never shies away from showcasing all the beauty and the horror associated with identifying as LGBTQ+. What we're witnessing here is a fictious depiction of the kind of violence and threats that people actually receive in real life simply for being themselves. Truthfully, this film isn't the easiest watch but it's one that feels absolutely necessary to further grasp the scope of what's happening to people suffering worldwide. The addition of revenge in this film's story made me incredibly curious to see how they might tackle taking on oppressors in a modern age. The final result makes for a shocking finish and undoubtedly sits Femme among the best releases of 2024!
