Tenet sees Christopher Nolan at his most bombastic and ambitious as he attempts to blend modern day espionage with a science fiction temporal twist! A lifelong fan of James Bond, Nolan clearly draws influence from some of the stunts and cheeky humor, breathing his own life into action and comedy that blend far better than you'd imagine. John David Washington's Protagonist exudes a natural confidence and charisma that's hard not to get behind, even if you're not entirely sure of what's going on around him. Rewatching this film in IMAX also confirmed that it's the single loudest movie ever made, with all the volumes cranked to max for any and all noises in the film. While I don't think it's anywhere near Nolan's best works, it still stands out among most spy and Sci-Fi thrillers as a unique blend of genres that introduces fascinating new ways to look at time travel and destiny.

Dune is a meticulously crafted space opera that brilliantly combines a truly unique prophetic tale with the futuristic vision of a master director in his prime. Denis Villeneuve has crafted a sensational visual language across his multiple feature films (Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, Arrival, Prisoners) which combines long takes with enormous scale. Villeneuve lets the characters and the scenery breathe life into his still shots, allowing scenes to progress naturally and creating a sense of reality in the world they're creating. Despite feeling like a lot of backstory and slowly building to an ending you know will be cut short, Dune does a fantastic job of telling a grand story and matching it was bursts of action that are almost enough to whet your appetite.

Dune: Part Two is one of the most captivating & engrossing cinematic experiences ever felt, taking science fiction storytelling to new heights as it brilliantly completes the pseudo religious tale established in 2021’s Dune. After facing a delay into a new year after the multiple Hollywood strikes, many including myself wondered how much a March release would help or hurt Dune: Part Two, which had already given up multiple weeks of IMAX exclusivity in 2023. While they may not hold the premium formatting exclusivity for long, Dune: Part Two has catapulted to a massive worldwide opening that shows no sign of slowing down before crossing a Billion Dollar mark. Having seen the film twice already with plans to go a few more times, I have joined the masses heralding this film as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time and certainly my lifetime.

Argylle is an overly convoluted attempt at making a spy-comedy that bogs itself down with an overwhelming number of twists and an underwhelming final payoff. After seeing an ungodly number of ads for this film in the months leading up to it, I found myself unable to escape their marketing tactics and often felt like they were giving away most of the film in the overstuffed trailers. The promise of a new Henry Cavill film certainly piqued my interest and I’m always a fan of what Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell are up to, but Matthew Vaughn is a filmmaker I’m still not totally sold on in terms of his bankability. He boasts a ton of impressive action in his films and they’re often quite funny, but I find that he struggles to keep everything together for a nice finale in his movies and that’s unfortunately exactly how I felt after watching Argylle.

Godzilla Minus One – Minus Color is a brilliant black & white conversion of the sensational film that evokes the essence of the 1954 original Gojira and plays extremely well with the WWII era. Rather than simply throwing a black & white filter over the color version, the visual effects artists painstakingly edited each shot to maintain both the quality of the shot and ensure that details were perhaps even more obvious to the audience. Having watched several black & white or monochrome versions of films, what stands out the most to me is how much cleaner certain visual effects look, from CGI to questionable costume colors. On what’s been confirmed to be a $10,000,000 budget, Godzilla Minus One shines even brighter in the black & white edition and manages to look even better and becomes even more horrifying in some moments.

The Beekeeper is a radical time at the movies, combining just enough B-movie silliness with a story that engages and massively entertains! Jason Statham movies often come with a certain stigma surrounding the quality of the film and stories, but they’re also largely thought of as badass action flicks. It’s a critical grey area that exists for viewers and reviewers, as they’re films that often defy conventional criticism and aren’t made to receive accolades and resounding thumbs-up from uppity awards bodies. Simply put, Jason Statham movies deliver exactly what they’re meant to and they’re only even better when a capable director and storyteller is at the helm.

Mean Girls returns to theaters as a film adaptation of the Broadway musical (adapted from the original film) which never finds a reason to justify its existence. I don’t know what conversations happened surrounding creating a musical based off the 2004 Mean Girls movie, but the music and lyrics scream off-Broadway in all the worst ways. I’m no theatre purist, but even I was cringing at the simple songs and at how what once was a hilarious story has now been turned into something unnecessary. For the TikTok generation there’s surely plenty that will appeal to visual sensibilities, but this adaption feels like the furthest thing from the original.

The Color Purple is a great film adaptation of the Broadway Award-Winning musical version of this harrowing and endearing story of hope and strength. Adapted from the same novel as the Steven Spielberg film, the story largely remains the same with the inclusion of original songs to tell the story in a unique new way. Having not seen the original film, I opted to go into this musical adaptation mostly blind to the story and had a remarkable experience taking it all in. I can see how the more dramatic, non-musical perhaps tells this story more effectively, but I still quite enjoyed the musical experience and imagine audiences will as well.

Ferrari is a very mildly paced film that has flashes of engaging moments that get lost behind a smokescreen of uninteresting drama and poor accents. Not nearly the awards player or racing film that many thought it would be, Ferrari is another curious case of having a ton of top-level talent and an intriguing subject matter result in a largely uninteresting film that feels like it could’ve been so much more. After a decade of great racing films that have performed well and told fantastic stories, it’s a bit disappointing to say that Ferrari doesn’t come close to the likes of Rush, Ford v. Ferrari, or even this year’s Gran Tursimo.
