Trump Mulls Sending National Guard to Baltimore; Trump to Host South Korean President Lee Jae Myung | NTD Good Morning
President Donald Trump says he may send National Guard troops to Baltimore, calling the city a “crime disaster.” However, Maryland’s governor has urged him to walk its streets before sending in troops. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance defended the federal takeover of the District of Columbia’s police force, crediting it for a steep drop in crime. Trump is also pressing Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to end the Senate’s ‘blue slip’ tradition, which is stalling his judicial nominees.
Trump is hosting South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Washington on Monday for their first summit. Talks are expected to center on trade and defense costs after Seoul agreed to boost its military contribution by more than eight percent. The leaders will also discuss nuclear issues, with South Korea's foreign minister saying the country may seek U.S. approval to reprocess or enrich its own nuclear material for industrial purposes.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran man at the center of a high-profile deportation case, reported to an ICE field office early on Monday with a number of supporters. He's expected to be interviewed by immigration authorities on Monday after being released from a Tennessee jail on Friday. His defense attorneys said the United States is seeking to deport Garcia to Uganda unless he accepts a plea deal that would facilitate his deportation to Costa Rica.

The National Hurricane Center said Erin's winds have weakened slightly since Wednesday. The storm is currently southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and is moving north along the East Coast. Tropical storm-force winds are extending up to 300 miles from its center. Beaches all along the East Coast are being closed as dangerous conditions continue.
The Texas House of Representatives approved new congressional maps on Wednesday after several hours of voting, following a two-week standoff in which Democrats fled the state in protest at the redistricting. President Donald Trump responded to the vote on social media, writing that “Texas never lets us down.” The map is now headed to the state Senate and could be signed into law by the end of this week. Meanwhile, California Democrats are working on their own redistricting plan, with their map expected to see a vote on the floor on Thursday. The new map would then be considered by California voters in a November poll.
Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid a visit on Wednesday to the hundreds of National Guard troops deployed in the District of Columbia, after nine days of federal control of D.C. law enforcement. Vance said that in the interim, there has been a 35 percent reduction in violent crime and an over 50 percent reduction in robberies. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that 550 arrests have been made so far. The U.S. Marshals Service has also put out a notice for $500 rewards for information leading to arrests in Washington.

The Kremlin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and world leaders are weighing in on Monday’s historic peace talks in Washington. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said a Putin–Zelenskyy meeting could happen within two weeks. Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte praised President Donald Trump as a pragmatic peacemaker.
Governors from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee are sending National Guard troops to Washington in support of Trump’s crime crackdown. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said the federal deployments don't make sense, and that crime is already declining. The White House pointed to the nearly 400 arrests made, while Trump signaled he may extend control or even declare a national emergency.
Hurricane Erin is passing the southeastern U.S. coast on Tuesday, and could pass the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Certain areas are facing a tropical storm watch, as well as mandatory evacuations. Parts of Maryland could see 11-foot waves as the risk of powerful rip currents continues up the Atlantic seaboard. In New Jersey, officials say water conditions can already be considered dangerous.
