Dr. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez has more than 17 years of daily news experience, mostly as a reporter, for the Boston Globe, WFAA-TV in Dallas and the Dallas Morning News. Her first job was as a copy editor for UPI in Dallas. She served as the Morning New U.S.-Mexico border bureau chief, based in El Paso.
Her research interests include the intersection of oral history and journalism, U.S. Latinos and the news media, both as producers of news and as consumers. Rivas-Rodriguez founded the Voces Oral History Project (formerly the U.S. Latino and Latina World War II Oral History Project) in 1999, which has videotaped interviews with over 960 men and women throughout the country. Stories based on those interviews are written mostly by UT journalism students, as part of their coursework. The project has several components designed to reach audiences ranging from school children, to academics, to the general public. Voces has organized conferences, produced books and mini-documentaries, co-produced a two-act play, (through Arizona State University Public Events and the University of Texas' Performing Arts Center), created educational materials. Voces has become an international resource for documentary film producers, scholars, journalists and the general public.
Rivas-Rodriguez has been active since her college years in volunteer efforts to bring greater diversity to the news media. She was on the committee that organized and founded the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 1982.
Adrian Villegas is the star and playwright of the one-man comedies "Six Mexicans Named Gonzalez" and "Barrio Daze" and Artistic Director of Austin, Texas’ Emmy-nominated sketch troupe The Latino Comedy Project (LCP).
The LCP's critically-acclaimed 2017 sketch show “Gentrif*cked” enjoyed sold-out runs from Texas to California, receiving “Best Of Austin” recognition by Austin Chronicle critics.
The LCP’s most recent production “Estar Guars: A May The Fourth/Cinco De Mayo Comedy Fiesta” enjoyed a sold-out run in spring of 2019 and will become an annual event returning in 2020.
The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the LCP as “hilarious” and “murderously funny.” The LCP’s YouTube videos have received over fourteen million views worldwide. The LCP cast also co-created an MTV3 comedy ad campaign, which was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Guests: Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante and the Nuestra Palabra Crew talk to Dr. Gabriel Cortez.
Typically, we don't archive our pledge drive shows On Demand. However, this particular program provided topics that no one else is sharing on FM Radio while weaving in our pledge pitches. And we made our goal. So, it's also a great reminder that we count on listener support to stay on the air to continue to bring you writers, scholars, activists, other artists and mover and shakers who are making a difference for our community.
I was also thrilled to give a shout out to the students, faculty, and staff at Jersey Village High School. I had the pleasure of visiting their ESL classes under the leadership of the brilliant Kim-Ling Sun. It was edifying to get to convene with such intelligent and motivated youth.
