  • Teaching Debate And Media Literacy In A Polarized Political Climate
In this hangout, participants asked what impact the current political climate, often characterized by its divisiveness, has on teaching debate and media literacy. Educators and experts in the field discussed why supporting students to have critical conversations while remaining open to others’ points of view is so important in this atmosphere. Guests also discussed how students can develop and hone habits of inquiry in the age of the 24-hour news cycle and reporting on violence and national tragedy.

Guests discussed the questions about matching primary sources with problem- and project-based learning. The conversation also pointed to specific resources and teaching strategies available from the Library of Congress.
This hangout was produced in support of Letters to the Next President 2.0, a project engaging youth in civic participation on issues and topics that matter to them in the US Presidential Election. It was also co-streamed at connectedlearning.tv.

  • Arguing The CRWP Way- Establishing A Classroom Climate For Inquiry And Generosity
Join members of the College-Ready Writers Program (CRWP) leadership team as they discuss how CRWP materials and principles encourage students to treat opposing views with respect and generosity. Students who write from CRWP materials start with an inquiry stance towards an issue and revisit their opinion in light of multiple, often opposing points of view. Such experiences for students are designed to create a classroom culture that values civil discourse and supports students in becoming effective participants in civic communities.
This hangout is produced in support of Letters to the Next President 2.0, a project engaging youth in civic participation in issues and topic that matter to them in the US Presidential Election. It will also be co-streamed at connectedlearning.tv.

  • From Voice To Influence- Media, Learning And Participatory Politics
In recent years, a wave of new research focused upon the interplay between participatory culture, learning, and politics has emerged from the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Initiative and in particular, from two related research networks, The Youth and Participatory Politics Network and the Connected Learning Network. This scholarship has often focused on such core concepts as “voice” or “civic agency” and a core debate around how we help ensure that young people’s voices are not simply heard but acted upon. This webinar brought together the scholars and practitioners who contributed to the forthcoming “From Voice to Influence” special issue of the Journal of Digital Media and Literacy to ask how in- and out-of-school experiences can help young people learn to use their voices to influence social change.

  • Remix To Speak Back To Media
In the midst of the 2016 US President Election cycle, how can we support the youth we work with in being critical media creators and agents around topics they care about instead of just consumers and targets of other people’s media? Join educators from the NWP, the LAMP, hypothes.is, and the Mozilla Foundation, who looked at a range of youth creations and free, open, and online tools and resources used to make and disseminate their own media. Live viewers were encouraged to try their hand at media making and sharing and to jump into a conversation about the implications for these tools, resources and practices in their own classrooms and learning contexts.
