Today’s guest is a member of RVA’s goth scene. She was a late bloomer, being introduced to the subculture when she was 28 by her ex-husband on Goth Night at Godfrey’s in 2001. She was hooked from that day on. Since then, she has met so many amazing and interesting people and attended numerous goth events in the area.

She also suffered many years in an abusive relationship and after emerging from that experience she was fully embraced by RVA’s goth community. The support she received is part of why she has been able to move forward and reestablish her life.

Today we will learn about the goth community in RVA and what it all means, with of course a few laughs along the way. We hope you enjoy this episode!

Today’s guest is one of RVA’s most known burlesque dancers: Scarlet Starlet. The “twirling temptress” always aims to entertain. Whether she’s twirling tassels, hoops, baton, or fire, the audience is sure to be teased and pleased. Scarlet enjoys performing a vast array of acts from silly to sexy to powerful. She has been seen at festivals across the country and has won a range of awards including Best Act, Most Classic, Most Wicked, and Best Variety Act. She is a burlesque and hoop instructor at RVA Swing, the producer of Burlesque Right Meow, and co-creator of the RVA Burlesque Festival.

In this interview you'll get a first hand look into the burlesque scene in RVA and learn some surprising obstacles that burlesque dancers have to overcome to perform at venues, interesting history of the art of the strip tease, wardrobe malfunctions, Scarlet's background, and much more. Today's guest is Jay Brown: owner, operator, band leader, lead vocalist, tenor saxist, washboard-ist, and tenor banjoist of the swingin' RVA vintage jazz band Grace Street Seven! You might have seen him and his bandmates perform at The Verdant Lady or perhaps at a local wedding or two. You also might have seen him perform in the other band he manages: Triple Crossing Jazz Project.

The best part about both of these bands, in our opinion, is that they truly cultivate an experience through their music, fashion, and theatrics that puts you back in time and truly makes you feel like you're in the 1920s. They go all out on their theme!

Jay goes into detail about how he fell in love with Jazz in the 3rd grade (The Pink Panther theme song), how he found himself in Richmond, his passion for World War II history, dance styles of the 1920/30s and much more. He talks about the history of Jazz in RVA specifically on Grace Street in the 1920s. He also talks about how his band survived the "roaring 2020" when the pandemic hit by playing concerts in his front yard for his neighbors.

Have you ever been to a First Friday event in Richmond? If so, you've probably seen a group of artists hula hooping with fire as well as other flow props to some really awesome DJs. That group is from Party Liberation Foundation (or PLF): a local burner group in our city. What is a burner group you ask? In this episode you will find out with the help of today's guest: Dj GON! 🔥 🔥

Dj GON, or Ryan, or Bohman, or Nyan, started DJing at the ripe age of 17 with a group known as Project Chalk. He would party hop with his friends DJing various parties in Wilmington, NC. He talks about attending his first local burn called "Mayhem" where people could get lost in this magical maze full of festival whimsy. He put his DJ setup in the middle of the maze and people would get lost or "gone" trying to find the music. That's how he coined the name GON. Ever since then he was hooked on burn culture and the magic it seems to cultivate.

Through attending burns, Bohman was introduced to PLF and was blown away by their fire FX. He was inspired, to say the least! He started getting to know the group and they invited him to their exclusive burn called "Transformus" and it "rocked his mind." He immersed himself into their community and eventually made the move to RVA to be an official member on their BOD.

Welcome back! Olivia and Liz had an absolute BLAST at the Church Hill Irish Festival two weeks ago. They walked from Liz's house, sipped on some drizzanks, watched bag pipers, Irish step dancers, several great bands such as the Rolling Stone's cover band, Mother's Little Helpers, tried copious amounts of soda bread, etcetera etcetera. Liz took a trip to Asheville, NC and Olivia took two trips to RVA's Jungle Room for some house music. Lee clogged his arteries with a greasy burger from Pop's Dogs & Ma's Burgers. 🍔😃

Enough about them though. This week's episode features RVA's one and only @miss_elaine_neous, Richmond's small biz hype woman! With over 11K followers, Elaine has made finding something fun to do in the city on any given day of the week extremely convenient with her mini guides. These guides highlight upcoming events and specials for businesses of all size around Richmond.

Elaine goes into detail about what life is like as a social media influencer, her posting process, her struggles, attending influencer events, balancing her work/life, and her personal story about building a life in RVA post college. You get an inside look into how her Instagram evolved from a "for-fun" national travel blog into a well-followed Richmond-centric tool for anybody and everybody in the area. She also throws out some tips and tricks for growing your social media account. In a nutshell, Elaine is all about keeping local small business alive and seen!

Then the silly part of the pod commences. The pod learns about Elaine's favorite curse word and her love of math, cottage cheese and Narnia. Lee gives it to the girls with a riveting and recent true tale of a venomous snake found in the cockpit of a plane! OH LAWD! 🐍 The 3 girls take a stab at guessing Lee's name. Lee in turn tries to guess Elaine's first name. Will there be a winner this round? 😮

The girls have sunshine on their mind... and that could be because of their special guest on this week's episode: Nate Oyler! 🌞

Nate (from Nate Oyler Music) is a solo singer/songwriter in RVA blessing wineries (like New Kent Winery) and music halls with his gritty beachy/southern rock/country style. Today, he blesses the podcast with an exclusive early release of his new single, "Sunshine State Of Mind" (officially out April 7th). Nate speaks about what his first time was like working with professional studio musicians who helped perfect his track.

The musician goes into detail about his early years in California, Kentucky, and eventually RVA - where he was a high school freshmen entering a brand new school where he knew no-one. Talk about a reinvention opportunity, if you ask the girls! 😂

Nate speaks about growing up extremely shy and forcing himself to take communications classes and drama to overcome this. He discusses playing in his first band with his dad and brother where Nate played guitar. He admits he didn't officially start gigging and taking singing seriously until his mid 30s with the all-original RVA band "Snake Oil Salvation." It just goes to show it is never too late to start anything!

Nate is also a full-time fire fighter who has been involved in several rescue situations. He talks about fire house pranks, the pole, and some interesting RVA firefighting history. Shoutout to all of our firefighters and first responders - we love you! ❤️

Saint Patrick's Day came and went and the girls discuss their past week's shenanigans. Liz had a blast at Rosie Connolly's with her friend from Italy. Olivia had an awful time at Shamrock the Block and plays some funny audio she recorded during the event.

The real attraction in this episode however, is a recognizable character from the Short Pump Pour House's dance floor. Well then you've probably spotted Barefoot Tom, this week's guest!

Being a veteran, fitness/wellness guru, multiple time fatal car crash survivor, man of God, and fun grandpa, Tom has lived a full and eventful life. He has overcome addiction, lost a son, and saved multiple people's lives. This interview will surely touch your heart and might even make you shed a tear or two hearing Tom's tales about his life.

Tom and the podmate's also discuss some Short Pump history and how the town got its name. Super interesting. Lee not only gives it to the girls and Tom but to a fan who wrote in telling him that she only listens to hear his sexy voice. Tune in to hear his erotic story bit. The girls are back to talk about the Super Bowl and the tragic loss of the Eagles (wah!). They discuss their Valentine's Day dates (Toto and 4 course meals). But the real attraction in today's ~explicit~ episode is the special guest appearance by their good friend Dave.

Dave is a seasoned Richmond guitarist who has performed in several successful bands around Richmond - one of them currently being Guinevere (https://www.facebook.com/GuinevereRVA/). The girls were once vocalists in his Journey/Foreigner cover project and can attest to his art of shredding on his Stratocaster.

Any-who, Olivia and Liz interview Dave about his musical history which started in New Hampshire when he was just a 15 year old boy inspired by ACDC's guitarist Angus Young. He talks about his first garage band with his sister on vocals and playing at parties on the third floor of an old uninsulated house. It was there they wrote their first hit song, "The Cat Shit On The Floor" (based on true events). Genius!
