Adam Robertson discusses how you can get your point across when working virtually, both as a host and participant. Clarification and verification of your message is critical.

Adam raises the ‘basics of communicating virtually’ in the Podcast highlighting key topics in the podcast – summary below:

•   Structure your input: How are we communicating? Structure your inputs into a beginning, a middle and an end (or introduction, main body, and summary/conclusion.)

•   Signposting: Put your ideas out there to create anticipation before launching into your idea.

•   Use the Rule of Three: A well-known technique – three items are linked together to help the audience understand the speaker’s key points: ‘in my view there are three benefits to this approach, first…second…third’.

•   Build Empathy: Influencing how we get people on board. Receptivity creates inclusion – make a link to what you have heard and then add to that conversation.

•   Be Positive: Don’t devalue your ideas – use positive language.

•   Use eye contact: Look into your camera when communicating.

•   Hosting an online meeting: If first time contact with people you haven’t connected with before give a 1 or 2 minute guidance on the techniques of the platform you are using i.e. break out rooms, muting yourself, what is expected of you in the meeting. It’s the logical logistics as to how the meeting is going to work.

•   Participants in an online meeting: Don’t devalue your experience – “turn up the dial” to push your ideas. Again, look into the camera to interact directly. Keep your pace and don’t speed up your message. It’s important to “land your point” in emphasizing your key points.
