O&B Puckcast - A Philadelphia Flyers Podcast

Isaiah and Dan are joined by guest panelist Alex from the Flyera Gonna Flyera podcast (@FlyeraPodcast on X) as they welcome Jason Myrtetus (@jasonmyrt on X) from the Flyers broadcast crew to assess what the heck is going on with the Philadelphia Flyers. The team has stumbled badly out of the gate, dropping its first four games after surprising last season with a first-round playoff victory. We delve into what has gone wrong, whether last year's success was a mirage, and whether the Flyers are headed for an inevitable downturn this season.

From there, we break down the areas in which the team has fallen short across the board, while also identifying the few players who have stood out among a group of underperformers.

We also discuss the impact of the Michael Bunting acquisition, the latest injury updates, relevant trade chatter, and more!

Isaiah and Chef welcome Dan back from his Asia trip to recap the Flyers' Rookie Camp, including the two games against the New York Rangers prospects. The panel breaks down the performances of top prospects such as Porter Martone, Denver Barkey, Alex Bump, Jett Luchanko, Oliver Bonk, Cole Knuble, and many more.

From there, the guys turn their attention to the upcoming training camp and the battles for roster spots among the forwards and defensemen. While the team appears pretty much set in goal, there will be competition up front among players such as Alex Bump and Nikita Grebenkin, as well as on the back end with David Jiricek, Oliver Bonk, and Ty Murchison among those looking to make an impression.

We also discuss the Athletic's portrayal of the Flyers as a "window-closed franchise", GM Danny Briere's presser, the latest updates on Matvei Michkov, and more!

Isaiah and Chef welcome Jim Biringer of fullpressmedia.substack.com as they evaluate the Flyers and their competition in the NHL's Metropolitan Division. The panel sizes up all eight teams and analyzes whether the Flyers will finish in the division's top three, be left scrambling for a Wild Card spot, or find themselves on the outside looking in come playoff time.

The discussion then turns to the hot-button topic of the Flyers' pursuit of a top centerman and explores just how many NHL players actually meet that criteria.

The panel concludes the show with thoughts on Matvei Michkov's return from Russia, Danny Briere's RG interview, the upcoming training camp and national television schedule, and more!

Isaiah and Dan welcome Scott Wheeler, who covers the NHL Draft and prospects nationally for The Athletic, to discuss how the young players and prospects on the Flyers' roster are shaping the team's timeline for success. The panel reviews Scott's latest articles from a Flyers perspective and considers whether the team's recent playoff run—including its first-round victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins—has changed his concerns about its direction.

Scott's 2023 redraft sparks a lively discussion about the Flyers' scouting successes. The panel also explores whether a prospect's league-wide market value should factor into the best-player-available (BPA) calculation, given that prospects can serve as trade currency as much as future roster players. The topic stems from the team's unsuccessful attempts to improve its NHL roster at the draft in June.

The conversation concludes with a look at the new contracts for Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, which give the Flyers flexibility—an apparent theme following their unsuccessful offer sheet for Leo Carlsson. The panel also discusses the possibility of acquiring Arber Xhekaj, Rick Tocchet's placement in The Hockey News' coaching rankings, the WJSS and more!

Isaiah and Dan welcome Bill Meltzer (Flyers.NHL.com, HockeyHotStove.com) to break down the Flyers' biggest offseason questions after the Anaheim Ducks matched Philadelphia's offer sheet for Leo Carlsson.

What does the failed pursuit of Carlsson reveal about the organization's mindset? Can the Flyers realistically accelerate their rebuild, or is patience still the best path forward? The panel also examines whether the club's draft strategy has limited its future trade flexibility and discusses whether GM Daniel Briere has any significant moves left to make this summer—or if meaningful roster changes will have to wait until the regular season.

The conversation wraps up with a look ahead to training camp, including the new contracts for Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, the expected development of last season's young players over a full campaign, the likelihood of Rasmus Ristolainen remaining with the Flyers , and plenty more.

Isaiah is joined by Anthony DiMarco (DailyFaceoff.com) for a special edition of the O&B Puckcast, reacting to the Anaheim Ducks' decision to match the Flyers' five-year, $90 million offer sheet for Leo Carlsson.

The duo break down the events surrounding the offer sheet, the statements from Carlsson and the Ducks organization following the decision, and what the outcome means for both franchises. They also discuss what the aggressive pursuit reveals about the Flyers' organizational mindset and their determination to accelerate the rebuild.

The conversation then shifts to what's next for Philadelphia. With Carlsson off the board, they examines the Flyers' remaining options to strengthen the roster at center and on defense, whether additional offer sheets or trade scenarios remain realistic, and what fans should expect as the offseason continues.
