Today’s episode we discuss a book that tells the family history of the author - Miranda Richmond. Her family was a part of a community of people that survived the Holocaust during the Second World War. The author embarks on the journey of unraveling her family history regarding the relationship between her grandparents that fell in love with each other before the war, married, bought an old house in South France, and then shortly after the war divorced for unclear reasons and not talked to each other for fifty years. What could possibly be the mysterious reasons for why a couple surviving through war had to break up?

Therefore, we will discuss two books written by Yeonmi Park - in order to live: a North Korean girl’s journey to freedom and Lee Hyeon-seo - The girl with seven names: a North Korean defector’s story. Both books are autobiographies and tells the stories of the authors’ lives in North Korea, how they grew up under an authoritarian regime, how they escaped from North Korea and their journey to South Korea in order to live their lives in ‘freedom’. Along the way they encounter life threatening situations such as: fall in the hands of human traffickers, being sold as slaves, kidnapped and held hostage under dire circumstance. Certainly, these topics are not easy to digest, nevertheless, we hope you appreciate this episode and give a better idea what is going on in North Korea.

The book tells the author’s life story of growing up in Rwanda, going abroad for studies in China, and finally settling down in Sweden to raise a family.
