Episode 37: Katia is one of the most unique and exciting up-and-coming talents in Australia’s underground music scene. Fiercely individual, passionate, and uncompromising in her tastes, she refuses to be pigeon-holed as a DJ or water down her sound, and it’s this dedication to the artform which sets her apart from many of her contemporaries.
Techno forms the underlying foundation of her music, which ranges from sparse, ambient soundscapes to scattered breakbeat rhythms and brutal, industrial walls of sound. Both intelligent and immediately impactful, Katia’s selections hit on a primal level, making them perfect for the dancefloor, but also reward attentive, critical listeners with unique and captivating minutiae.
A graduate of FBI’s “Dance Class” programme, where she was mentored by Adi Toohey, Katia quickly found favour among Sydney’s discerning techno tastemakers. Appearances at parties such as .darkroom, Hex Yellow, Pavlova Bar and Insert, guest mixes for Upperberry, Bomphcast, Doppler, Bondi Beach Radio and FBI, and her own series of Undulate events solidified her reputation as a versatile and unique artist. Relocating to Melbourne in early 2018, she has already made a name for herself in Australia’s “techno city” supporting the likes of Ansome and Headless Horseman.
More recently, Katia has focused her attention on writing original music, and her productions have the same misanthropic edge as her DJing. Released independently, intentionally crossing genre boundaries and challenging listeners’ preconceptions of the kind of music a tiny blonde girl “should” make, her tracks are brutal, gritty, and abrasive interpretations of techno, breakbeat, and acid.
