  • Romantic Theology Today withDr. Michael J. Christensen
If you benefit from this radio show/podcast and would like to support the ongoing efforts of this ministry, you can do so by visiting https://churchhurtsand.org.  Donations are tax-deductible, needed, and appreciated more than you know.
Have you ever heard of Romantic Theology? Sounds good, doesn’t it? Let’s find out more with Dr. Michael J. Christensen.
After becoming a Christian at the age of 13, I developed some habits and behaviors which could have been considered prudish, ironically quite contrary to my generally outgoing personality. Not committing adultery or fornication before marriage became my obsession for over a decade, carefully studying the meaning of the word, along with fornication, the way other teens might have devoured those certain National Geographics or hard to come by Playboys. How was a Christian adolescent survive a normal increase in testosterone which felt more like an abnormal bomb going off in my body?
“Be careful of those things which could naturally lead to inappropriate sexual intimacy in your relationships with girls,” I heard from Rev. Bob Letzinger during a mid-winter conference at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pittsburgh. Amazingly he confessed to having a climax the first time he ever held hands with a girl. His talk was famous, and we knew it was coming, but did he really say that? And he kept going, warning about the hugs which lasted too long, the times alone without accountability, the dates which lasted too late into the night.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, my very best friend sitting next to me (who currently holds a very prestigious position as a professor of theology at a premier evangelical seminary) looked over at me and noticed the mark on my neck. He looked like he had seen a snake as his face turned red and his hands started to shake. Quietly and accusingly he pointed at it, trying not to be obvious as the speaker continued, “That’s a hickey,” he said with wide eyes.
I hadn’t known about hickeys until the previous evening with my long-term high school girlfriend, Kathy. You remember those days, your first love, the power of attraction, the depth of longing. Could that tell us anything about God and the Church?
Let’s ask Dr. Michael J. Christensen. professor of theology at Northwind Seminary.

  • #194 Terry Hershey Soul Gardening: Nourishing Your Innermost Self
Show Notes  Today my friend Terry Hershey and I talk about his book, Soul Gardening, which after having written sixteen books, this one is his favorite. I have a feeling it is his favorite because it just might be a faithful autobiography of a man in search… of himself of what it means to embrace life on planet earth. The closing words of his book tells it all… “People who love this world, those who pay attention, are all gardeners. Because gardening is not just about digging or planting. Gardening is about cherishing.” Delightful. Let’s bring on Terry to tell us more.

  • Living Hope–Why does a real-life Angel become involved with the world’s toughest cancer?
Rosa Velasco's journey with pancreatic cancer began after learning her coworker’s wife was fighting this deadly disease.  Instead of running away, Rosa ran towards Roberta and they soon became fast friends, “Besties.” Rosa and her husband Juan became a great source of support for Roberta and her husband Vic. During a PurpleLight in Orange County, a tribute to those affected by pancreatic cancer, Rosa, found out her grandmother died from the disease years earlier. Since learning about Roberta and her grandmother she has learned many of her coworkers have experienced pancreatic cancer in their lives as well.  Rosa, a real-life Angel feels she gets more than she gives.  Rosa is open, honest and vulnerable as she takes you through her journey and why she became, and stays involved with the world’s toughest cancer. Though she says, “its all about Roberta,” others like Lupe Romero, a six-year survivor before her death in 2019, touched her heart.  Rosa wants to keep fighting for all survivors and for their families. Though the journey can be hard at times, it is a way to give back and can be a joyous ride as well.  Rosa’s journey may cause you to shed some tears, but it will also bring some laughter and hopefully will encourage you to get involved.  Listen to her journey here on OC Talk Radio, Orange County’s only community radio station.  If you or anyone you know need help with their journey, please contact the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Patient Services at 877-2-PANCAN.  If you’d like to share your story or have story ideas, please contact Roberta Luna at [email protected]

  • Elizabeth Funk-The Dignity Fund
works at the intersection of profit and purpose.  She is a thought leader and veteran in harnessing the power of capitalism to solve the world’s most pressing problems.
Elizabeth serves as the Senior General Partner at Dev Equity, a venture capital fund investing in B-Corps in low-income housing, urban revitalization, and sustainable agriculture in Latin America (Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru).
Elizabeth started her career in rapidly growing, innovative technology companies.  She served as a Product Manager for Microsoft Word when Windows was first launched and participated in forming the original Microsoft Office product.  After graduating as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School, she joined Yahoo! as one of the earliest employees-- quickly rising through the ranks to lead the business side of several divisions including Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Classifieds, Yahoo! Greetings and other properties.  Most importantly, she was a founder of Yahoo! Shopping and became a leader in developing and shaping Yahoo’s e-commerce strategy.  Under her leadership, Yahoo’s e-commerce initiatives grew to become over 2/3 of the company’s revenue.
After Yahoo! Elizabeth was appointed President and CEO of CML Global Capital, a publicly traded investment conglomerate based in Canada.  As CEO she oversaw several major transactions including executing a takeover of another publicly traded real estate company, a normal course Issuer bid, and eventually a privatization of the corporation.  She sold several of the firm’s corporate assets and eventually sold the remaining portfolio company to its management.
Since that time, Elizabeth has dedicated her career to impact investing and corporate social responsibility-- demonstrating that strong financial performance and positive social change are inherently connected.  Her first impact investment fund, the Dignity Fund, provided growth debt to 14 Microfinance institutions in 12 countries, enabling loans to over 35,000 poor entrepreneurs per year.  The Dignity Fund was one of the very first for-profit investment vehicles in the Microfinance industry, paving the way for the massive influx of capital into that field.
Elizabeth became an avid evangelist for impact investing and has served on many boards of impact funds and social enterprises.  Her board positions include Unitus (chair) a microfinance accelerator; Deutsche Bank’s Microfinance Consortium, FINCA Microfinance fund, Align Impact’s fund-of-funds, MicroPlace (chair) an online investment company she helped sell to EBay, Root Capital (farm expansion capital), and Ujjivan (Microfinance bank that has since gone public) among others.
Elizabeth is an active member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) where she served on the international board and founded the YPO Social Enterprise Network; Toniic, an association of impact investors, and many other communities.  Elizabeth is a thought leader and frequent speaker on impact investing and corporate social/environmental responsibility. • Reality, Jazz AND Faith with John Patitucci
If you are a jazz fan, you don’t want to miss this. If you aren’t, get ready to learn from an amazing man accomplished in a lot of ways. Today, bass virtuoso, John Patitucci.
    PREFACE: Reality, Jazz, AND Faith
If you grew up in a church traditional at all, you will remember a worship component called the “offertory.” To me it seemed simply to be a time for the music director to show off his high-brow classical taste, sometimes with a soloist belting out with too much vibrato in a foreign language. With a little more reflection it seemed to be a programing sleight of hand designed to cover the exact amount of time it took the ushers to collect the offering before the organ abruptly broke into the Gloria Patri shaking the very foundation stones of the church with a refrain all knew and were able to sing along without looking at the words.
Modern liturgies, which some would consider not liturgical at all, a conclusion with which I strongly disagree, lean toward something less repetitive. I remember one time in a mid-week service the offering was the last thing done before I was to get up and teach. That is the time for a preacher to compose himself, double-check that his zipper is up, make sure the notes are in order, and grab a moment of prayer remembering it isn’t about him. “Get out of yourself turkey,” my spirit would hear.
But this Wednesday evening the music director introduced a guest musician to do a solo instrumental piece for the offering. Doesn’t sound too unusual, right? But the guest’s instrument was a bass. “This should be interesting,” I thought. And the bass had six strings, not four. Thankfully I would be getting up in a few minutes to save things if it was a flop.
A few minutes later I walked up to the lectern, wiping tears from my eyes, wondering what had just happened. Nothing I could say would reach the heart of people like what they had just heard. I would teach humbly, knowing God had shown up already, thankful to be a part of the body of Christ.
Let us welcome today to Church Hurts And, that bass player and renowned virtuoso, John Patitucci.
