Do you feel like you spend too much time prompting your child through a bedtime routine? Kids with executive functioning issues may have a hard time getting organized, getting started and staying on task. That can be frustrating when you’re trying to wind down the household for the night.

Nighttime prep doesn’t need to be a dreaded activity. For many kids, picture schedules and checklists are an easy way to keep track of and follow a routine. A checklist can show kids what they need to do before calling it a night. It can also help them remember the order in which to do things.

Every day, parents and caregivers of children are confronted with challenging questions and situations for which they are unprepared. For many, questions about a child’s weight are particularly difficult for an adult caregiver to answer since feelings about overweight and obesity are often complicated by both personal issues and the conflicting messages communicated about weight through media and society at large. In fact, a WebMD/Sanford Health survey found that parents of teens find it more difficult to talk about weight with their child than talking about sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking! But awkwardness won’t stop the questions from coming. As America’s childhood obesity crisis continues, we can expect that the questions will surface more frequently – and at almost any time

The International Institute of Therapeutic Intervention and Learning is a great resource for those utilizing brain entrainment and neurofeedback. Their soundscapes specifically target areas where a client may be having trouble. For those unfamiliar with Brain Entrainment, it refers to the capacity of the brain to naturally synchronize its brainwave frequencies with the rhythm of periodic external stimuli, most commonly auditory, visual, or tactile. The external stimuli elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following response’, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given medium. FFR can be useful because brainwaves are very much related to mental state. For example, a 10 Hz brainwave is associated with relaxation, so a 10 Hz sound pattern would help reproduce the relaxed state in your brain. I have successfully used it with varying conditions including; ADHD, ASD, PTSD, Anxiety, and Sensory Integration. However, one does not have to have a diagnosis to utilize brain entrainment. Positive research on brain entrainment continues to grow and expand.
