In our second episode of a 3-part series exploring the OCDSB's Project 'True' North, we turn the microphone over to students at Glebe Collegiate Institute, English Language Learners, who have been learning about Harry Timothy Jones, a member of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada’s all-Black battalion from the First World War.
The song "Andrew William" features in this episode, written by singer/songwriter Chris White about his grandfather, William Andrew White the chaplain of the No. 2 Construction battalion.
In our second episode of Season 2, we begin a 3-part series exploring Project 'True' North; an approach to history learning that has students doing history as historians do. In our first episode we speak with Blake Seward, the architect of The Lest We Forget Project. We discuss the origins of The Lest We Forget Project, and the beginnings of Project 'True' North, concepts for historical thinking, learning with evidence, and the philosophical foundations of Project 'True' North.
In episode 1 of our second season we talk to Angela Robinson, a grade 8 teacher from Henry Larsen Elementary School, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
What began as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, became an approach to learning: What if a cross-curricular project in podcasting became the medium for students to discover their voices, and, at the same time, provided a means to create the stories they wanted to hear. Connecting with local radio, and podcast personalities, students at Henry Larsen shared their imaginations for the world to see.
In episode 2 we talk with Derek Brez from Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Derek is pushing the boundaries of what Science education looks like in high schools, with some of the most reluctant learners. When the learning involves authentic challenges of growing food "north of 60", and creating the tools that support a farm-to-cafeteria vision that feeds and nourishes the school community, one can hardly be surprised that the reluctant learner becomes an active citizen scientist engaged in the pursuit of what and how the earth provides, and sustains, all of us.
In our inaugural episode we talk with Leslie Mott from North Gower Marlborough Public School, in North Gower, Ontario, Canada.
Leslie reflects on the story of powerful learning with grade 4 and 5 students in the Spring of 2019; the journey that meandered from student directed time, to student driven initiatives, to students as creators and Leslie as a learner and enabler.
