'In from the Cold' is a two part series looking at the men from Co. Sligo who fought and died contribution during 'The War To End All Wars. We here from Sligo native, Brian Scanlon who's ancestors fought in the war, with not all returning. From the perspective of a direct line to people who fought in the trenches of Europe, we get a sense of what life was like for the working class in the region through the stories past down over the years. We hear how a sense of adventure to new lands was a draw for men as surely, it 'would be over by Christmas'.

Historian Simone Hickey has spent years, and continues to do so, carrying out extensive research on the men who fought and died. Through her efforts spending countless hours reading through primary sources such as official documents, letters and newspaper articles we get a sense of what motivated the people at the time and how societal pressure and propaganda played a major role in the recruitment drives across the region.

Through their contributions, we find out what Sligo and Ireland was like at the time which was still under British rule. Some of the reasons the men would sign up, what life was like for them in the trenches and how they were treated when they returned to a vastly different Ireland. While the men and their efforts were forgotten for decades, we'll hear how they have been remembered in more recent times.
