Odyssey: A Daily Odyssey through Homer’s The Odyssey episodes

  • Calypso’s Protest, Zeus’ Law (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 5)

The decree is obeyed—but not without grief. Even the gods feel the ache of parting.

In The Odyssey, Book 5, Calypso answers Hermes with a bitter lament, accusing the Olympians of jealousy whenever a goddess loves a mortal. She recalls other divine unions cut short by wrath and violence, and defends her care for Odysseus, whom she rescued from the sea and promised freedom from death and age.

Yet she yields. Zeus’ will cannot be undone. Though she cannot provide ship or crew, Calypso vows to give Odysseus honest counsel, hiding nothing that might help him reach his home unharmed—while Hermes warns her not to invite the thunderer’s anger by delay.

  • Zeus’ Will Is Spoken Aloud (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 4)

Hospitality is offered—but authority cannot be refused. The beauty of the island gives way to the weight of decree.

In The Odyssey, Book 5, Hermes accepts Calypso’s welcome and then delivers the message he was sent to bear. This journey, he makes clear, was not of his own choosing but commanded by Zeus himself, whose will no god may overturn.

The decree is final: Odysseus, long-suffering beyond all others, must be released. Though all his companions were lost after angering Athene, it is not fated that Odysseus should perish in exile. He is destined yet to see his friends, return to his high-roofed home, and set foot once more in his own land.

  • The Messenger Reaches the Enchanted Isle (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 3)

Command takes form in motion. What was decreed on Olympus arrives at the edge of the world.

In The Odyssey, Book 5, Hermes sets out at once, fastening his golden sandals and flying swift as thought over sea and land. He descends to Calypso’s distant island, a place of breathtaking beauty—blazing cedar fires, woven song, flowing springs, and a garden fit to astonish even the gods.

Yet amid all this splendor, Odysseus is absent from the warmth within. He sits apart on the shore, worn with tears, gazing out over the empty sea. Calypso recognizes the messenger at once and welcomes him, unaware that the stillness of her isle is about to be broken by the will of Zeus.

  • A Decree Set in Motion (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 2)

The council answers at last. What has lingered in debate is resolved by command.

In The Odyssey, Book 5, Zeus replies to Athene with firm assurance: Odysseus’ vengeance has already been set in motion, and Telemachus will be guided safely home while the suitors’ efforts come to nothing. The balance of fate is clarified, not denied.

Zeus then charges Hermes with a decisive task—to carry the unerring will of the gods to Calypso. Odysseus will depart at last, not by divine escort but by his own labor, sailing a bound raft through suffering to the land of the Phaeacians, where honor, aid, and a final passage home await him by fate’s decree.

  • A New Council, a Long Delay Ends (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 1)

At last, the gods turn their gaze back to the man long absent from his own story. What has been endured in silence is spoken aloud.

In The Odyssey, Book 5, Dawn rises and the Olympian gods gather in council beneath the authority of Zeus. Athene speaks with sharp clarity, reminding them of Odysseus’ suffering on a distant island, held against his will by the nymph Calypso, cut off from ships, crew, and return.

She presses the injustice further still: while Odysseus languishes forgotten, his son now faces mortal danger at home. The balance of neglect and loyalty is laid bare before the gods—and the long-stalled fate of Odysseus is brought once more into judgment.

  • Dreams and the Narrow Strait (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 25)

Fear speaks softly at the threshold of sleep. Comfort answers—but only in part.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Penelope answers the phantom in a half-dream, voicing the double loss that haunts her: a husband long gone and a son newly imperiled. The vision assures her that Pallas Athene herself guides Telemachus, and that pity has moved the goddess to intervene.

When Penelope presses for tidings of Odysseus, the answer is withheld. The phantom fades, leaving hope without certainty. As dawn nears, the suitors put their plot into motion, sailing to the narrow isle of Asteris, where they lie in wait—poised between Ithaca and Samos—for Telemachus’ return.

  • A Phantom’s Comfort, a Silent Ambush (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 24)

While violence is set in motion, mercy takes a gentler form. The night carries both threat and reassurance.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Antinous quietly rallies the suitors to act on their murderous plan, selecting twenty men and readying a ship to lie in wait for Telemachus under cover of darkness. As they arm themselves and watch for nightfall, Penelope remains alone above, fasting and consumed by fear for her son’s life.

At last, sleep overtakes her grief. In that stillness, Athene sends a phantom in the likeness of Iphthime to stand at Penelope’s head, bidding her cease her tears and take heart—for Telemachus, she is told, is not hateful to the gods and will yet return.

  • A Prayer in the Upper Chamber (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 23)

Despair gives way to confession—and grief turns, at last, toward hope.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Eurycleia reveals that she knowingly aided Telemachus’ departure, bound by his oath to keep silence. She urges Penelope to rise from sorrow, cleanse herself, and appeal to Athene, trusting that the gods have not wholly forsaken the house of Odysseus.

Penelope obeys. From her upper chamber she prays to the goddess for her son’s protection, and Athene hears. Below, the wooers boast in ignorance, mistaking ritual for surrender, unaware that divine attention has already been drawn.

  • A Mother’s Lament (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 22)

Grief deepens when fear finds its voice. What Penelope learns cannot be undone by anger alone.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Medon admits he does not know whether a god or Telemachus’ own spirit compelled the journey. The uncertainty overwhelms Penelope, who collapses in sorrow at the threshold of her chamber as her handmaids mourn with her.

She pours out her grief, recalling the loss of Odysseus and fearing that her son, too, may be taken without trace. In desperation, she calls for Dolius to summon Laertes, hoping that counsel, protest, or public appeal might yet save the last heir of Odysseus’ house.

  • Penelope Learns the Plot (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 4 – Part 21)

What is whispered in secret soon breaks into the open. Knowledge arrives too late to be softened.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Penelope learns of the suitors’ hidden design when Medon overhears their plotting and brings word to her in the halls. Her anger flares first—an indictment of their ingratitude and abuse of Odysseus’ house—but it quickly turns to terror.

Medon reveals the truth: the suitors plan to murder Telemachus on his return from Pylos and Lacedaemon. At this, Penelope is undone, struck silent by fear that her son’s journey may erase even his name from the earth.
