ADVICE FROM COLIN BLUME:

START SMALL: Colin does not advise using debt to get started.  It will compromise your decision making and put in a position that is more likely to cause you to fail.

NO FANCY EQUIPMENT: Colin does not think that starting with brand new, fancy equipment is the best idea.  This encourages debt, and the immediate benefit of all the best equipment is not likely to pay off for you.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT COLIN BLUME HAS RECEIVED:

DON'T GIVE UP: Colin has received advice from friends and family alike.  Tomorrow is a new day, don't give up because today did not go well.  There is a tomorrow, and every day is a learning experience.

RELIABILITY: You need to be reliable, keep your word and get things done on time.

 RESPONSIBILITY:  Colin believes in being responsible.  The "buck" stops with him.  If something breaks, or something is not done on time, he takes responsibility for those issues.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

Colin did not have a book recommendation, but he talked a lot about responsibility.  I found Taking Responsibility: Self-Reliance and the Accountable Life and it had great reviews.  Colin is right about responsibility.  Check this book out to polish up your skills in that area.

INTRODUCING CLAIRE SHANE!

Our guest this week comes to us all the way from Batesville, Indiana(again!).  Claire Shane is in a specialty animal SAE.  She is working for an older couple and assisting them with their Alpacas.  Claire has been working this couple's farm since she was 13 years old.  As the years have gone by she has received more and more responsibility.  Now she is doing almost everything in the operation.  Only in her junior year, Claire continues to develop her expertise and has seen a lot.  For example, she learned about a parasitic worm that developed on the alpaca's water.  Now she knows how to keep that from happening.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.

This week I decided to continue profiling my upcoming E-Book about the "health benefits of entrepreneurship."  We are talking about confidence today.  Confidence is definitely something that you will develop as an entrepreneur.  You have to, or you cannot succeed.  This has been very beneficial for me as my previous career was killing my confidence outside of work.

I recommend the book The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy this week.  This book definitely demonstrates that the very successful in America are people just like you and me.  Most of them are also entrepreneurs!  If this book does not boost your confidence, it will definitely leave you with no excuses for not starting your own business and becoming successful.

KEY IDEAS:

This week's episode is a little different than normal.  It is just me, talking about one chapter of a book I have written (not released yet).  The discussion is about the health benefits of entrepreneurship, and the chapter is about "contentment."

Contentment is an idea that was made clear to me by the book The Legacy Journey: A Radical View of Biblical Wealth and Generosity.  I also recommended this book in episode #46.  This idea is something that we should all be striving for.  When somebody says that agriculture is a lifestyle business, or they want "that lifestyle", what they are really saying, possibly without knowing it is, is that that they want to be content.

This episode profiles how I took a pay cut becoming an entrepreneur, but ultimately felt like I had more money.  It talks about the things we do with our finances to try and feel better when we are working in a job that is not a genuine fit for us.  It talks about "self-medicating" through consumerism.

I am hoping to profile the rest of the chapters of this book on the podcast as well.  This is the first installment.  I hope you like it.
