INTRODUCING DAKOTA SIEGLeR!

Meet the owner of "Dakota's  Custom Works!"  Dakota Siegler has his own hay cutting and raking business.  He is also raising beef cattle and expanding his operations in agriculture while keeping a full-time, off-farm job.  Dakota is 21, which officially makes him the eldest SAE guest that I have had on the show.  Dakota has continued with FFA since graduation, and is pursuing his American FFA Degree.  I hope you enjoy this interview with Dakota Siegler.

ADVICE FROM RANDY HETTINGA:

APPRENTICE: Find an expert, likely out of the area you want to work in, and go to work with them.  Learn how they do what they do.  Learn how to make the business work.

LOVE YOUR WORK: Money isn't everything.  Don't choose any business just for the money.  Choose something that you truly enjoy so you don't burn out later.  The money will eventually come if you are in the right fit.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT RANDY HETTINGA HAS RECEIVED:

 DON'T DO IT FOR THE MONEY:  The best advice that Randy has received is the same as the advice he gives, you will burn yourself out if you are doing it just for the money.  Find something that you love.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT ADS TO RANDY HETTINGA'S SUCCESS:

 WORK ETHIC: Randy states that he has a "solid work ethic."  He is willing to work the long hours and to do the job correctly.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

 Randy recommended Trump: The Art of the Deal as a book that really inspired him in business.  Ironically, I interviewed Randy on the night of the first Republican Presidential Debate of 2015 when Donald Trump was all over the news.  However, Randy pointed out that regardless of Trump's position in popular media at the moment, he is a shrewd businessman, and he had some nuggets of expertise in this book.

INTRODUCING THE AGRARIAN CREED!

This week's episode is a little different than normal.  There is no guest this week, and we are discussing "The Agrarian Creed."  This episode was inspired by an article that I read in the Idaho Farm Bureau Quarterly by Stewart Truelsen.  I thought this was very relevant to the FFA.  First, the FFA has its own creed called "The FFA Creed."  Second, students who are considering or have already chose agriculture as a career should know how deeply rooted the value of agriculture in the United States is.  Last, all of us who are drawn to agriculture but cannot really explain why, should know that it is part of our national make up.

We also discuss the "Sons Of The American Revolution" and how I recently became a member.  Agriculture is patriotic and one of the original professions of the civilized world.  I hope you enjoy this discussion of passion for agriculture and "The Agrarian Creed."

KEY IDEAS:

ADVICE FROM GREG PETERSON:

THINK LONG TERM: Greg wants you to imagine what your business will look like 10 years from now.  Do not expect instant success.  Know that the vision you have of your life is worth waiting for.  Put in the necessary time, the 10,000 hours.

TRUST YOUR GUT: Greg talked a lot about having a gut feeling and going with it.  He is humble, but he has great intuition.  Intuition is simply "knowing without knowing why."  That is your gut feeling.  Trust your intuition.  It is built into your DNA for a reason.

BECOME A GOOD LISTENER: What Greg loves about his interaction with his audience is having a "conversation."  Without listening, this conversation would only go in one direction.  Greg believes that he picks up significantly more by listening than he does when he is talking.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT GREG PETERSON HAS RECEIVED:

LOOK SIDE TO SIDE: Greg's father gave him this piece of advice.  "Keep your eyes open and look side to side."  This reminded me so much of my previous career in law enforcement.  I've actually received this exact advice, but in a different context.  When we were trained to drive fast, with lights and sirens on, we were told that under that stress we would develop tunnel vision.  So, we were trained to purposely turn our head from side to side when driving under those conditions because our peripheral vision would be diminished and you did not want to miss a car off to your side, etc.

Greg was warned against developing tunnel vision.  His father was wise enough to make sure that he did not get so focused on one particular thing that he would miss other opportunities.  Make sure that you keep your head on a swivel too.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT ADS TO GREG PETERSON'S SUCCESS:

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE: Greg describes himself as being thankful.  He has gratitude.  He understands that what he has been able to do has been given to him, and he does not take that for granted.

THE BUSINESS SECTION: Greg reads the business section of the newspaper or a business website every day.  Opportunities arise all the time, and reading about what is going on in business can make that metaphorical light bulb click on.  So, expose yourself to those in business if that is the direction you want to go.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

Greg recommends Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell.  He really is a believer that success comes through repetitive practice, pursuing your idea and getting your "10,000 hours" in.  You will learn all about the 10,000 hours in this book.

OFI 055: Fodder Production | FFA SAE Edition | Nancy Schiffer | Kuna High School FFA

INTRODUCING NANCY SCHIFFER!

This week we have another local guest.  Nancy Schiffer is an impressive young woman from our hometown of Kuna, Idaho.  She has a market lamb, entrepreneurship SAE.  Last year she produced barley fodder for animal forage for her SAE project.  She went all the way to the National FFA Convention with that project.  Nancy and her whole family were very helpful to us this year in getting Hattie's lamb read for the fair.

Nancy will continue her market lamb SAE project for her senior year this coming fall.  After graduation it is off to the Navy for Nancy.  She has already enlisted, and she knows when and where she is going to basic training.  I could not be prouder to have this impressive young lady on the podcast.
