Does having a camera room/studio mean you’ve made it?
In Episode 009, photographers David Patino and Ashton Staniszewski talk about the pros and cons of owning and running a studio space. David’s had a few and runs one now, Ashton used one in a past life and now misses it (sorta).
They also tackle the subject of career milestones as creatives and how easy it is to fall into the pitfall that is the comparison game — you know the one.
Studios we mention:
Tannery Studio — David runs this one. It’s rad.
Power Plant Productions — Based in Philadelphia, PA. Incredible space, even better people. Tell ‘em Ashton and David sent you.
Camera:
Samsung S10 - Yup we talk about a $1600 phone. Light up those comments.

Episode 007 Office Hours
David is back from his week in Rome, Italy. He spent the week as a blissful tourist with a Fuji X100 around his neck. He and Ashton reflect on the joy of taking snapshots in Aperture priority amid crowds of tourist selfie sticks.
The photographers also cover the internal struggle of pricing and what to do when you feel like your price is too low if the client said “yes” quickly. Should you feel bad that you left money on the table? Ashton and David offer great advice on building numbers and what questions to ask and answer while creating proposals.
And finally, gear:
Will the Canon EOS RP change the way you shoot?

Does new gear make you a better photographer?
In episode 5 of the Office Hours, photographers David Patino and Ashton Staniszewski discuss how they approach buying new gear. Camera manufacturers are always tempting photographers with the next best latest and greatest shiny thing, but how do you know what you need to have a successful photography business? David and Ashton have all the answers and will help you work through your emotional or technical attachment to your old gear.
Ashton and David also cover these listener questions in a new Q&A segment:
How important is a shot list prior to the shoot?
Do you shoot everything in continuous because it sounds cool?
What do you do when your talent isn’t talented?
How do you start acquiring commercial clients?
What do you do when your client is wrong?
Why do really fast lenses have an aperture when everyone just shoots them wide open?
What is your favorite lighting set-up for a studio shoot?
Do you ever turn down work because you have too much on your plate?
And lastly, the camera review:
Will the Panasonic S1 put Panasonic back in the running with the other big competitors?
Spoiler: it has two card slots.
What do you do when you’re asked to work for a trade instead of actual dollars?
In episode 004, Ashton and David explore the age-old creative question: If you work for trade, will you ever get paid? They talk through the nuances of working for money, trade, exposure and bragging rights.
If your quote is over the client’s budget, David and Ashton share how they navigate that without passing on the client or project. They also discuss pricing the job, billing hourly and dealing with scope creep in real time when clients ask to tack on “a few more shots” at the end.
Ashton and David finish up episode 004 with some great insight for art directors and how they you deal when the client says, “I just don’t like it.”
And finally, the camera review: A beautiful, screenless Leica. The Leica M10-D Digital Rangefinder Camera. Why not?
Well, it has one card slot, so take the money you were going to spend on that and just it send to David so he can buy one.
