Haley Taylor Schlitz became The Youngest Black Law Graduate in U.S. History in 2022. To make things even more interesting, Haley graduated from high school at 13 years old and received her undergraduate at 16 years old! Haley was accepted into nine different law schools before choosing Southern Methodist University - where she made history.

There was a period of time where Haley’s parents noticed her losing interest in school. To bring back that interest, her parents asked her school to be tested as gifted. After being told no by the school, they decide that homeschooling would be the next best option for Haley. Even being homeschooled, Haley’s mom made sure she got involved in many activities including basketball, fencing, and piano. The experience being homeschooled allowed Haley to do things at her pace which allowed her to apply for colleges at 13 years old. When it came to choosing which college to attend for Undergrad, she was accepted to more than 15 schools before choosing Texas Women’s University. After graduating at the age of 16, Haley applied to several law schools and chose to attend Southern Methodist University. Even with her incredible accomplishments, it took some time before choosing to pursue law. Originally, Haley wanted to pursue chemistry and then bounced around with other fields before settling with law. Currently. Haley is a teacher teaching students in grades 7-12 and in the future, she wants to get involved in educational policy. She also published a book “The Homeschool Alternative” in 2019 where she shares her experience of being homeschooled.

Edriss Ndiaye is a student-athlete at Ohio State University who competes in foil fencing. This sport is discussed more on the podcast. Throughout his career in foil fencing, he was a Junior National Fencing Champion and a 7x National Medalist. Now in college, he received a Name, Image, & Likeness deal from Degree. Outside of the sport, Edriss is the Founder of The Blok App, an app that aims to transform how people plan their social lives and engage with calendar apps.

While many people would start a sport at a very young age, Edriss started fencing slightly older than everyone else. However, Edriss was determined to do this sport for as long as possible. He credits his family, who made many sacrifices in order to help him become the person he wants to be. Despite being a beginner in the sport early on, Edriss was not afraid of challenging the more experienced players even if it meant he was going to lose. He was always looking for ways to be the best at the sport. His work ethic contributed to having success in high school, finishing high at a Division 1 North American Cup, and competing at other tournaments. From there, he was looking at colleges such as Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Penn State. After spending time with different schools, Edriss committed to Ohio State. Now at Ohio State, he has an NIL deal where companies can support student-athletes as they navigate their collegiate journey. Edriss will be a senior in the upcoming school year but after an internship at Nationwide during his sophomore year where he would schedule meetings with his team members, this inspired him to create The Blok App. It will be releasing in the near future but Edriss hopes it can help people think differently about calendar apps.

Lily Mott is the host of “Be The Change” podcast. A podcast that amplifies the stories of young activists who are making a difference around the world. This podcast started in the summer of 2020 during the Black Lives Matter protests. Outside of the podcast, Lily is a student at Washington & Lee University majoring in Journalism and Politics. By the time this episode comes out, Lily will have graduated from University.

Lily comes from a family who are passionate about civics education. Her dad is an AP Government teacher who actually teached her when she was in high school. Her grandfather is a Professor who teaches government at Gettysburg College. In the summer of 2020, Lily was in Washington DC, interning for her Congressman when the Black Lives Matter protests occurred in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. After a conversation with her dad, Lily took part in the protests despite her phone battery being at 7%. Something even her dad did not know at the time. After spending the next few hours being tear-gassed and fired on by police with rubber bullets, Lily went home to her apartment and recorded her experience being involved in the protests. The next day, Lily published that experience which became the first episode of “Be The Change.” Initially, the podcast was created to share her perspective on the protests but later on it turned into stories of other people.

Brianna Pinto is a Professional Soccer Player who plays for the North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League. She has also represented the U.S. Women’s Youth National Teams by competing in the FIFA Under-17 and FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Off the field, Brianna has her own foundation known as The Pinto Futbol Foundation, which aims to invest in grassroots programs and grow soccer in underserved communities domestically and around the world.

Brianna comes from a sports family: Her parents playing collegiately at the University of North Carolina and both her brothers (one younger brother and one older brother) play soccer professionally. After attending her first Youth National Team camp with the U14 girls at the age of 12, Brianna believed she could become a professional soccer player. Since attending her first camp, she has had the chance to travel all across the world to compete for the U.S. Youth Women’s National Team in many tournaments. Tournaments such as the 2016 U17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan where Brianna was 16 at the time. In 2018, Brianna served as the U.S. Youth Representative in the United 2026 Bid Committee at the 68th FIFA Congress in Russia. She delivered a speech in front of members of the FIFA Congress and her role allowed the United States, Canada, and Mexico get hosting rights to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Now, in addition to her being a professional soccer player, she is an advocate for women and minorities.

Ishaan Shah is the Co-Founder of Stolen Dreams as well as Youth For Freedom Collective. These are two organizations that are raising awareness about the issue of modern slavery. In addition, Ishaan also advocates for gender equality and is a Youth Representative at the United Nations.

When Ishaan was 13, he was shocked to find out that modern slavery still existed. He was taught that slavery was abolished in England and other parts of the world. When he went to India however, he met children who were vulnerable to or had survived modern slavery. At the time, Ishaan did not know what that meant at the time but after a while, realized this issue exists in different ways. This experience inspired Ishaan to create Stolen Dreams so that people could be more educated on this issue. Despite not having a personal connection to both modern slavery and gender inequality, Ishaan believes these are human issues that need to be discussed and find the right solution. He also hopes to inspire more young people to find something they are passionate about and work together to achieve a common goal.

Shaan Baig is the Founder and CEO of SB Innovations, a research and development company that aims to find solutions to problems happening around the world. He also founded Young Scientists, and Innovators (YSI) which helps young people find their potential in the STEM field.

After suffering a concussion while playing hockey at the age of 13, Shaan designed a helmet that would be more effective to prevent concussions. What started as a sixth-grade science fair project later inspired him to become more involved in tackling real-world problems, and a passion for the medical sciences. Despite not having the best report cards, Shaan was committed to his passion for the medical science field as well as finding ways to solve problems and inspiring others to get more involved in STEM. Now, Shaan has transitioned from solving issues related to concussions to researching Alzheimer’s and prostate cancer.

Khushbu Kotak is the Founder and CEO of Salama Minds, whose mission is to provide therapy sessions to young people between the ages of 11-22 in Kenya regardless of socioeconomic status. By creating Salama Minds, Khushbu also hopes to address the stigma around mental health in Kenya.

At the age of 15, Khushbu went to therapy because of personal challenges she was going through. After her experience, Khushbu went to social media to raise awareness on mental health for young people in her community. After receiving positive messages, Khushbu created Salama Minds. Despite raising awareness about the issue of mental health, Khushbu has faced challenges from people who downplay the issue or do not believe in it at all. Since creating Salama Minds, she - along with her mom - has had meetings with parents to talk about getting their children therapy sessions. While there is still a stigma about going to therapy in her community, there are parents who are willing to provide support. Khushbu hopes that Salama Minds isn’t just only available in Kenya but all over Africa as well!

Emmanuel Long is a student at The Ohio State University and is the Co-Founder and Co-President of the Undergraduate Society of Black Leaders. This organization aims to inspire and support Black Students to become successful leaders and professionals. In addition to the organization, Emmanuel is a first-generation college student majoring in Medical Anthropology and Neuroscience and minoring in African American studies.

Going to college is a special moment for many people. For Emmanuel, it means more because he is the first in his family to attend college. When Emmanuel found out that he would be attending Ohio State, his parents were not able to reciprocate the excitement he felt for himself because they did not know what it meant. Because Emmanuel is the first in his family to attend college, he had to learn and train himself in different areas so that he could have a smooth transition from high school. That being said, Emmanuel’s parents still play an important part in his life even if they may not know much about the college process. During winter break of his sophomore year, Emmanuel was searching for ways to improve experiences for Black Students on campus. After having many conversations including with his Co-Founder and Co-President of the organization, the Undergraduate Society of Black Leaders organization was created. When Emmanuel graduates from college, he wants to pursue Neuroscience research in gene therapy and gene therapeutics optimization and also going into state health equity policy.

Pareen Mhatre is an immigration activist and on the Board of Directors for Improve The Dream, a youth-led, nonprofit that supports citizenship for children whose parents are long-term visa holders. They are known as “Documented Dreamers,” and Pareen is one of more than 200,000 people who fall under this category. Her involvement with Improve The Dream has allowed her to testify before the House Judiciary Committee to share her personal story of what it means to be a Documented Dreamer. In addition to being an immigration advocate, Pareen is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa, majoring in biomedical engineering.

Pareen was born in India but moved to the United States at a young age. At the time, both of her parents were students at the University of Iowa and later went on to work for the University. They were given work visas that were sponsored by the University, which allowed Pareen to stay on a dependent visa. However, after Pareen turned 21, she aged out of the system and would face the issue of potentially going back to India. During that time, Pareen was on a tourist visa. When Pareen heard about Improve The Dream, she became involved with the organization and saw how there were people who could relate to her story. In 2021, Pareen testified before the House Judiciary Committee to talk about her journey where she had to narrow her and other people’s stories in five minutes. After her testimony, Pareen received her student visa. Since being involved in immigration advocacy, she had support from the University of Iowa community to further discuss the conversation about immigration reform as well as her story being featured in multiple news outlets such as ABC News, Fox News, NBC News, and more.

When Dieunerst Collin was nine years old, a stranger filmed him at Popeyes restaurant. Dieunerst responded with a side-eyed reaction. This reaction went viral and Dieunerst was given the nickname “The Popeyes Meme Kid.” Because of this recognition, it was difficult for Dieunerst to go out in public knowing what he would be referred to as. To help him get through this, he turned to friends, family, and football. One of his biggest achievements was in high school where he led his high school football team to a State Championship and celebrated by giving a side-eyed reaction similar to the one that made him go viral when he was nine years old. Now, Dieunerst is a student at Lake Erie College where he also plays football there. In January of this year, Dieunerst received a Name, Image, Likeness deal from Popeyes. This has allowed him to work with Popeyes as well as other brands. Despite the 10-year journey from becoming a meme to working with the restaurant where he became the meme, Dieunerst hopes to pursue a football career and hopefully play in the NFL as well as becoming a sports analyst in the future because of his love for sports.
