Okiki Podcast: Making Inspirational People Known- Finding Your Purpose and the turning points that Propel You to Success

What type of fitness do you love to do? Crossfit? Zumba? Cardio? Did you purchase a peloton bike during the pandemic? Do you love to cycle indoors with an electric bike or go biking outside? I personally love to go biking outside and doing dance. It's great when fitness doesn't feel like a chore, but an overall enjoyable wholistic experience. There are so many benefits to fitness, including mental health and that is what motivates me. I personally have never thought of opening a fitness centre or a gym, but my friend Hope Mombo did just that during the pandemic.

Hope grew up in Saskatoon and after high school she took time to work and figure out exactly what she wanted to do next. She worked at a few different places and eventually decided to go to dental hygiene school in Toronto. It was a great learning experience but she didn't finish. After that she came back to Saskatoon and felt very lost but found a job and waited for her next opportunity. The next summer she opened my spin studio Revolve Cyclehouse and since then she has been running it! It's been an uphill battle having been hit by covid 6 months into opening but she continued to learn and pivot at every turn.

Tasemere is such a gem! We connected on Slack through the Black Professional Network. I had the honor of being her first podcast interview!

Tasemere Gathers has spent a decade working with entrepreneurs in the non-profit sector. Tasemere's focus on community building/commercial revitalization allows her to quickly understand the challenges that businesses face and provide actionable solutions that can be implemented. Before launching the brand, Tasemere freelanced in her spare time, giving start-up advice to friends and colleagues. After a series of successes, Tasemere knew she had more to offer to the business community. In 2017, Tasemere launched the DM Firm specifically for micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses. I met Nataizya through a group called Pitch Better, supporting Black female entrepreneurs all over Canada.

Nataizya Mukwavi is the Founder of Black Women Connect Vancouver, a not-for-profit organization founded in 2017 serving to bridge gaps present in the local Black community, particularly those affecting Black women. Black Women Connect Vancouver has created a community of support based around the shared unique experiences of Black women. It is a collective of women who come together to inspire, empower, leverage their strengths, and embrace their diverse experiences. In this community, Black women can build meaningful relationships, express their solidarity with each other, and celebrate the beauty of Black womanhood. Black Women Connect Vancouver is essential in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the Black population makes up less than 1%, and is unequally dispersed throughout the Lower Mainland (Canadian Census, 2016).

Along with managing the operations of Black Women Connect Vancouver, Nataizya is the Executive Director for a not-for-profit organization serving to meet vital needs and provide emotional support to women in Surrey, British Columbia. Prior to this position, she was the Child Sponsorship Coordinator for an international not-for-profit organization known as Mercy Touch Mission International, where she launched a mentorship program to support marginalized girls in a rural community in Ndola, Zambia. In 2015, her internship with Hope Mission's Wellspring program in Edmonton, Alberta, gave her extensive experience working with women enrolled in an addiction recovery program.

Nataizya has vast experience working with and alongside people of various cultures and ethnic groups. She is especially passionate about seeing people empowered and advocating for those marginalized in society. Nataizya loves extending compassion, so that others can recognize their purpose in life. Her mission is to influence the development of people, so they too can be influential and reach their potential in becoming who they want to be.

Marc grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He and his parents and siblings traveled every summer; He played highly competitive soccer and went on numerous trips for national tournaments. He was 14 when he began using drugs and alcohol to cover up the pain in my heart. This was my coping mechanism throughout my life and was a deep, real struggle for me. In my early 20's, He worked as a Sales Manager for car dealerships and pursued various entrepreneurial endeavors. He hit rock bottom and he was desperate for change.
