Third-and-1 to 3 and third-and-4 to 6: 7-of-12 in both buckets (~58%).

Third-and-7+: 5-of-31 (16%).

Texas’s own offense: 16-of-17 on third-and-1 to 3 (94–96%), 7-of-16 on third-and-4 to 6, 6-of-25 on third-and-7+ (~24%).

On 57 snaps of second-and-7 or longer, Texas averaged about 7.5 yards per play; when they passed those snaps, about 9.6. Roughly 63% of those snaps still gained at least 5 yards. A short first-down run does not end the series.
OU’s defense held Georgia to about 3-of-15 on third down and Michigan to two conversions. Hosts still note one busted drive can decide it, and OU has already given the ball away too often.
Tennessee is the blueprint: 12 meaningful possessions, seven gained 5 yards or fewer, Texas punted seven times, 3-of-12 on third down, 262 yards, six sacks. Texas’s line is not world-beating either. Texas wins a possession game, 4–8 yards at a time. OU is not good at that.

Texas State still rushed for 161 and converted 8-of-14 third downs in a blowout loss. Three drives totaled 215 yards and reached the Texas 17 or deeper; they produced 7 points and missed two field goals.
OU’s Red River offensive drought (SoonerStats credit)
1,095 days since an OU touchdown vs. Texas.

136 scrimmage plays without a touchdown (Texas’s longest drought is 104).

115 plays / 20 drives without a snap inside the Texas 20 (Texas’s longest was 85 plays / 16 drives).

101 dropbacks without a 30+ completion. Longest completion is 28 yards, Q2 of 2023.

72 rush attempts without a 15+ run. Longest OU run since is 11 yards, Q4 of 2023 (Gabriel).
2024 context: receivers were out. Hosts still call the product boring. They almost left the New Mexico game early. Defense is the only exciting unit. Fans are cheering the offense not to mess up, not to score. That mindset leaks onto the field.
Run game and the line
Texas has allowed about 397 rushing yards on 140 carries (2.84 YPC) against teams that can run, including Ohio State and a Tennessee line that was supposed to be elite. OU is at 2.9 YPC. Vs. New Mexico: 20 carries, 46 yards (2.3), and 60% of runs gained 3 or fewer.
Hosts push back on “just establish the run.” They want an average offense, not a great one. Rodney Anderson and Caleb Kelly blame injuries and bad luck and oppose firing Bill Bedenbaugh. Arch Manning and Mateer
Arch is better than last year but not a No. 1 overall pick in a weak QB class. He still has throws that are hard to explain, but he does not have Mateer’s catastrophic turnovers. Passing and interception numbers are otherwise similar. Texas fans and one host’s Texas-fan boss call the offense the biggest disappointment in the sport. One good quarter vs. good teams (Ohio State) has been enough to win.
Texas has been beaten on the back end by a true WR1: Jeremiah Smith 8-164-1 (60% of Ohio State’s passing yards); Tennessee’s Mike Matthews 4-72-1 (~50% of Tennessee’s passing production). Isaiah Sategna (and Rocky Beers) have to test the weak link. Mateer has to stop playing scared. Hosts expect a turnover and say he should play free anyway. Venables called him “our starting quarterback,” which Tierani reads as starter, not necessarily finisher. If he puts them in a hole in the first half, he should sit. Colin Simmons is the problem on the edge. Texas plays a lot of bear with linebackers on the line. Someone has to hit them early. Hosts also want a tone-setting personal foul.
Injury-report skepticism
Some absences (Harris, Heim) are real game injuries. Others (Cole Sullivan in practice, Bogunowski in a game, Kip Lewis on punt/kickoff) feed the “who cursed us” feeling. 2:00–4:00 — Red-zone offense listed 136th nationally. Drives repeatedly died on fumbles, missed FGs, or INTs.

29:00–30:30 — Best-looking drive of the season reaches the 2. Mateer loses the ball out of his hand on what should have been a score. Instant 14-point swing. Hosts describe the living-room reaction as disgust, anger, shock. After that play Mateer “looked like he’d lost all confidence / all testosterone.”

14:00–16:00 — Predicted the late, off-balance throw over the middle (same concept that worked vs. New Mexico’s poor safety). Against Georgia athletes it became the Jacob Jordan INT. “Never should make that throw.”
Quarterback Play — Central Theme
12:00–16:00 / 19:00–21:30 / 31:00–32:30 — Consensus: Mateer lost the game with turnovers and indecision. Double-pump on rhythm throws, cannot anticipate, sees receivers open then throws late. Flat concepts and fourth-down reads that “you learn in seventh grade” go unthrown. Wide-open guys (Elijah Thomas, tight end in the flat) unused.

Venables said they discussed a QB change at half and decided against it. Hosts wanted at least one series for Witt Neubauer at the end of the half as a “factory reset” / consequence. Fear of losing the locker room by pulling the starter permanently.

Broader point: last three games OU has 226 rushing yards on 96 attempts (2.3 YPC). Any QB would look similar behind this line, but Mateer’s specific mistakes (fumble out of hands, late throws) are on him.
Defense
13:00–14:00 / 22:00–24:00 / 46:00+ — Defense played at an elite, national-championship level given the positions the offense put them in. Held Georgia to 24 non-turnover points. First INT of the year + a fumble recovery. Physical until guys started pulling hamstrings from being on the field constantly. Kip Lewis still competing like it’s a title game. “If they weren’t a top-5 defense you give up 60.” One long TD run late; hosts say you’re lucky it was only one.
Coaching, Clock, and Situational Decisions
18:00–19:30 / 26:00–28:00 / 2:07–2:10 — Delay-of-game penalties and wasted timeouts (breaking huddle with 5 seconds, burning TO on 3rd-and-10 instead of just taking the 5 yards). Two-point conversion after first TD while down 21: ran it up the middle (the one place they cannot run vs. Georgia). Analytics vs. “vibe of the game.” Later extra-point attempt partly to let Tate Sandell see the ball go through the uprights after missed FGs. “We broke Tate.”

O-line: Better than recent weeks (Mateer sacked once) but still not good. Missing Michael Fasusi; players out of position. Bill Bedenbaugh likely gone after the year.
Run Game, Scheme, and Comparisons
16:30–18:00 / 2:12–2:16 — Committee approach at RB has produced nothing. Rodney Anderson (via One Oklahoma podcast) and Lincoln Riley-era standard: establish the run first, 2-to-1 carry ratio so line and backs get a feel. Riley practiced almost exclusively run early; current staff missing assignments on screens and jet sweeps that should be explosive. Florida averaged 12.5 YPC vs. Ole Miss the same day; Texas ran on Tennessee. “Arch Manning would look like Mateer in this offense.”

Four different OL combinations already; Fasusi’s return (hopefully for Texas) would let Foj at RT and stabilize the group.
Looking Ahead — Texas / Red River
23:30–25:00 / 2:17–2:21 — Defense will again play well and give up one offensive TD; offense cannot do “crap.” Texas is physical but not Georgia-level. Hosts expect Mateer to start; only a disaster would force a change. Season can still be good if they beat Texas and a couple more, but someone on offense needs a “come-to-Jesus” moment. Basic things still don’t work.

Oklahoma is 2-1 after beating New Mexico. “Nothing really to worry about… except you got arguably the best defense in the country.”

Next up: Georgia (Kirby Smart, two of last five natties, offense 2nd nationally in yards/points/yards per play). Georgia was Chad’s preseason natty pick.

The surprise is not Georgia being good — it’s Oklahoma’s offense looking this bad.
Core Problem: The Offense Cannot Run (6:30–10:00)
“We can’t run a foot. We can’t run the football.”

John Mateer is being asked to hide everything (“quarterbacks are deodorant”). Ole Miss’s run game is also mediocre; Trinidad Chambliss just elevates it.

Stats pulled from StatBroadcast after New Mexico:
Average third-down-to-gain: 3rd-and-7.

Third down every 3.9 plays (almost never converting early downs).

Longest run of the game: 9 yards. Zero runs of 10+.

66 rushing yards by RBs (61 of them behind the line of scrimmage).

Offense looks “discombobulated,” like spring ball with freshmen or a brand-new system every week. Cohesion and confidence seen vs. UTEP vanished after Michigan.
Staff Alignment & Play-Calling (10:00–15:30)
Multiple voices on offense: Ben Arbuckle (OC), Kevin Wilson, Daylon McColl, etc. “It looks like three different things going on at once.”

Chad’s suggested come-to-Jesus: Arbuckle should tell the room he will call his offense (the one that worked at Washington State) or get fired doing someone else’s. “It’s like having Mike Leach call the Wing-T.”

Two schematic options floated:
Slow it to a crawl — hold the ball, drain 5–6 minutes per drive, limit Georgia possessions (Army 2020-style clock control).

Go five-wide / spread / one-yard splits and live with the Air Raid. Risk: Mateer is currently struggling with anticipation, accuracy, and processing — the exact traits the Air Raid demands — against elite pass rushes (Colin Simmons next).

Tempo experiment vs. New Mexico (snaps every ~30 seconds) produced an INT and a punt.
New Mexico Game Film & Field Position (19:30–24:00)
OU outgained New Mexico 299–185 but New Mexico ran 28 plays in OU territory vs. OU’s 12 (2.3x more).

Offense and special teams repeatedly put the defense in short fields. That problem explodes against better athletes and coaching.

Kirby Smart on OU defense: elite talent + near-perfect technique + “want-to” + speed + intelligence. Same traits Georgia has on both sides.
O-Line & Personnel (25:00–32:00)
Line play is “bad.” Mateer was getting hit as he released a quick throw to Cetania.

Bill Bedenbaugh’s group has not produced at the expected level the last five years (post-Creed Humphrey era). Constant injuries, position shuffling, freshmen playing.

Hope: Fasusi returning to his natural right-side spot so other linemen can slide back to comfortable positions. “Brushing your teeth with your left hand” analogy.

Only four real practice days before Georgia.
Defense, Emotion, and Fan Reaction (32:00–43:00)
Defense is the only unit they trust. David Stone had a career-high 8 tackles after addressing personal issues and apologizing to the team.

Venables’ postgame “No. You watch the game” answer was praised — emotion from the top is needed.

Booing the offense is fine; indifference would be worse. Playing not-to-lose at the end of the half (then missing the FG) showed lack of trust.

Georgia will not drop the easy ones or lose fourth-and-1.
David Stone Injury Update (43:00–48:00 & 1:02)
Mid-show rumor: dislocated knee / possible ACL.

Later source update: initial fear was dislocation + possible ACL, but no structural damage. Could play Saturday; more likely rested until Red River.

Massive loss if he’s out — first-round/top-15 talent, arguably co-best DT in the country with Ole Miss’s Echols when healthy.
Staff Continuity & Identity (45:00–50:00)
Defensive staff is ~80% Clemson/OU holdovers from Venables. Offensive staff has almost none.

Continuity matters for teaching the tiny technique details that create edges.

“Find an identity and find it fast. You don’t have time. You’re playing No. 2 and No. 1.”
QB Context — Don’t Isolate Mateer (50:00–56:00)
Every great OU QB (Baker, Kyler, Jalen, Caleb, etc.) had NFL talent around him and a functional run game.

Washington State and Miami Cam Ward years featured multiple 4.5–7.4 YPC backs. OU is at 2.1 YPC as a team.

Lincoln Riley still the best QB developer; Maiava leading the nation in passing yards/efficiency at USC.

Michael Hawkins revisionism is unfair — he had his own accuracy issues at OU.

Putting Bo Bentley behind this line vs. Georgia/Texas would be “seeing ghosts.”
Running Back Rotation (56:30–1:00)
Rodney Anderson (One Oklahoma podcast) ripped the four-back committee. Lincoln’s rule was two series for the starter, one for the backup — timing and vision with the O-line require consistent reps.

Chad/Tierney: pick two bell-cows and live with it. If a guy isn’t healthy enough for more than a few snaps, he’s not healthy enough to play.
Closing Hope & XenoZone (1:00–end)
Fasusi + Fogey back in natural spots + simplified scheme = possible small confidence spark.

Defense needs a score or short fields for field goals.

XenoZone (dog) went 4-1 last week. This week’s slate: OU-Georgia, USC-Oregon, Texas-Tennessee, Penn State-Wisconsin, Missouri-Mississippi State. Zeno picks Georgia, Tennessee, etc. Chad would rather lose to Georgia than Texas.

Silver linings vs. New Mexico (4:30–7:00)
Defense came through in the clutch — the only reason they didn’t lose. Run game and passing weren’t working.

They found a way to win ugly. Better effort vs. Michigan than vs. New Mexico in Rob’s view. Maybe just a bad game / setting (fireworks, crowd).

What must be fixed before Georgia (7:00–19:00)
1. Offensive line protection
New Mexico looked like one of the best defenses in football. Mateer has no time. Same personnel but combinations keep changing (Beanball/Bedenbaugh shuffling). “You could put any other quarterback back there and they’re still going to struggle.” Wall of defenders on every handoff. Chat (Mark Wagner): coaches have lost the room; “cancer keeps going.” Need to find someone who can block.
2. Don’t lose the turnover battle
Three turnovers vs. New Mexico (two INTs + muffed/fumbled punt return). Georgia will score off them. Defense is the only hope if they don’t gift points.
3. Get in rhythm / help the defense
No more three-and-outs. Sustain drives even if they end in a punt or FG. Big D-linemen need rest. Georgia averages ~59.3 PPG and ~539 yards (hosts note the sample includes weaker teams). Time of possession and physical wear will kill OU if the offense stays on the sideline.
4. Convert third downs and make field goals
Get in FG range. Tate Sandell missed a 41-yarder at the half (uncharacteristic). Grayson Miller also shanked one but got the “Oklahoma roll.”
Other notes:
Better gains when they went under center — then they abandoned it. That’s coaching.

Venables: “Two things can be true” — thankful for the win, have to get better. Hosts interpret it as a message to Arbuckle and the offensive staff.

Some fans want a QB change (Hawkins Jr. mentioned in chat). Hosts: they’re paid millions; if you’re not performing, sit down.

Sanford Stadium ranked as one of the hardest places to play (hosts list it No. 4 behind Tiger Stadium, Ohio State, Beaver Stadium).

OU already survived 100k+ at Michigan — that’s the one silver lining for the road environment.
