Rolf Schlotmann of Tradeciety.com and Edgewonk.com gives his Action Plan for transitioning from part time trade to full time trader
Rolf lived for years as a ‘Nomad Trader’ traveling and trading in Asia - he shows us how to live the dream

Trader Interview - Rolf Schlotmann - How to Become a Full Time Trader

Long time listeners of the podcast will remember our interview with Moritz Czubatinski on Episode 16. Moritz and Rolf form both halves of the Tradeciety team, and are also the people behind the wildly popular Edgewonk trading journal.

Rolf began his professional life in much the same way I imagine many of you reading this did - good degree, corporate job, good salary and great prospects. But, just like many of you I expect, he grew disillusioned with the 9-5 life.

Rolf did what many wish they had the stones to do - he sacked off his job, sold everything he owned unless it fit in one bag and moved to South East Asia to become a full time trader, or ‘Trading Nomad’.

But, being a deep thinking kind of guy, this was not a rash decision; not spur of the moment. He made sure that he followed an action plan.

He laid it out for us and recommends that anyone thinking of following in his steps to become a full time trader does something similar:

First become a profitable part time trader. Be honest with yourself. Stop system hopping. Get great at one thing.

Decide how much money you need to live for a year. Keep that separate from your trading account. Ensure that your trading account is big enough and you are profitable enough that after a year you could live on the profits.

Be patient and have a long term mindset.

If you decide on Monday that you hate your job don’t just quit, sell everything and move to Thailand. Follow an action plan.

You have to be a profitable part time trader before you can become a full time trader. Rolf’s experience with many traders that he has mentored through this process suggests that once a trader is sat in front of the screens all day every day they actually find it harder to trade profitably because they can’t stop fiddling with their trades!

Deciding to quit your job to become a profitable trader is the wrong way around, according to Rolf.

This episode is packed full of advice for anyone wishing to become a full time trader, be it a nomad trader or from-your-bedroom trader at home!

    In this episode:

The crypto comp continues, with player “10301703” storming into the lead with a 50% gain in 2 weeks!
Owen and Tom are part of the chasing pack, but still up very healthy percentages
Nick from Alpha Group is on the show to explain his Forex scalping strategy
He uses only two things - volume and price action
That’s right - actual live Forex volume data for retail traders!
Tom and Owen also talk about the eternal battle between discretion and rules. When is discretion a money maker (or saver!) and when is it just poor trading psychology?

Trader Interview - Nick from Alpha Group - Trading Forex Volume

Nick has managed, in our 79th trader interview, to show us an utterly different way of trading!

We’ve had swing traders, day traders, scalpers, share traders, Forex traders, commodities trend following guys….you name it we’ve had it. But we’ve never had an interview with someone who scalps Forex based on proprietary volume indicators.

It is notoriously difficult to find reliable volume data for Forex, certainly not anything close to being real-time. COT data reports are weekly and only really help long term swing traders who can get a vague idea of market sentiment.

Nick uses proprietary indicators that pull volume data from several ECNs to give a clear picture of the Forex volume being traded at any given time.

Nick’s methodology is built on the proposal that when there are a lot of buy limit orders in the immediate vicinity of price, then price will go up a short time later. Naturally with Sell limit orders the price will go down.

The infrastructure needed to put together the volume and price action indicators that he has created is extensive, and this makes his service very intriguing.

Beyond what Alpha Group itself offers, Nick is clearly an experienced and profitable trader, and his views on price action and volume in the Forex markets make this a fascinating interview.

Listen in and make up your own mind!
Discretion Versus Rules - The Eternal Battle

Maybe it is just weakness, but Owen has recently questioned his trading rigidity. When Cable and CHFAUD recently both bounced off a level for the third time that was just offside from his take profit, he began to wonder if he have should  just pulled the trigger and taken his cash!

Building in this sort of discretion is one of the hardest parts of trading. How much is just fear and greed? How much is a coldly rational decision making based on experience-led technical analysis? It can be very hard to tell, and worse, it is almost impossible to backtest for these sorts of nuances.

Perhaps a forward test for a year with analysis of the discretionary exits versus the ‘rules’ exit prices? Or perhaps Owen should just stick to his system and stop tweaking! Ultimately he’s making money - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Tom and Owen have got off to a flying start in the crypto competition
Well, one of us is flying up and one is flying down... Listen to find out which!
We are pleased to see that about 70% of active traders in the competition are making money
Mike Melissinos, trend following hedge fund manager, is on the show to keep us grounded
He demonstrates how you can stick to your trading plan even in tough circumstances
And make hay when the sun shines!

Trader Interview - Mike Melissinos - Trend Following Hedge Fund Manager

Mike Melissinos is only a few years older than us, but he runs a hedge fund. That is pretty cool. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool trend following trader and is a fan and friend of Turtle Trader and trend following legend Jerry Parker.

Mike talks to us about what it is like to be on top of the world when the markets are working for your trading style, and how to keep the faith when the markets just aren’t conducive to making money.

Trend following is a notoriously cyclical way of trading. Sometimes markets are trending, sometimes they just are not. Mike keeps the faith because he has done his research. He has done his maths and he knows that trends cluster, and when times are good they are very good.

He also knows that trend following mega markets usually directly follow extended flat periods. It is no secret that we are currently in a flat period and that trend followers are suffering, particularly in commodities.

But, Mike knows that the good times could be just around the corner, so he keeps the faith.

    Crypto Trading Competition Update

It has been really pleasing to see so many people to get off to a positive start in the crypto competition. Despite there being no leverage available, one trader is up over 20% in the first 6 days. Many others are in double digits and about 70% of active traders overall are making money.

There is plenty of distance to go, but this is a good start!

The trade of the week was definitely a Bitcoin Long trade from the bottom of the weekend sell off. A number of traders were caught out by the initial sell off over the weekend when Segwit2x was cancelled. Fortunately I think a few traders didn’t start till Monday so they weren’t caught in a long position!! Or maybe some smarty-pants actually went short and caught the move down? If so email in and tell us!

We’ve seen some movement in Alt-Coins with a spike up in Ripple and Litecoin, though both of those moves were temporary and anyone not taking profit will have been left with almost zero gains after a fast retracement.

But maybe this signals a medium term upwards movement back towards the all time highs? Ripple’s spike was caused by good news from American Express, so it may have a longer term effect.

Admitting that the Forex markets are a bit flat and sideways at the moment, we look at practical solutions
We discuss ideas on where to find volatility - commodities, cryptos? Or just sit back and wait?
The Crypto Competition is upon us! We talk opening strategies
Kevin Davey is our guest. He won the World Cup Championship of Futures Trading and tells us how to approach a Trading Competition with victory in mind
He has built countless profitable trading algorithms and lets us in on his secrets

Trader Interview - Kevin Davey - How to Win a Trading Competition and Algo Trading Strategies

Kevin Davey’s success at the World Cup of Futures Trading from 2005 to 2007 is the stuff of legend. He came second in 2005, first in 2006 and second again in 2007. This unprecedented level of success led the world to sit up and take notice.

Kevin achieved his remarkable run through developing trading algorithms. After 15 years of fruitless labour and after trying various trading techniques, Kevin perfected a winning process.

His process enables him to find and select trading ideas, backtest them, perform the perfect amount of optimisation, and release them into the wild to trade away at all hours, bringing him profit!

Crucially, his method of approaching the data and parameter optimisation prevents him from falling into the traps of hindsight bias and over-optimisation that most beginner algo-builders suffer from.

This trap is even more prevalent when using automatic backtesting than with manual backtesting. If you manually backtest a system then you have by definition already chosen the system and can’t “curve fit” it for the data.

With automatic backtesting, too often people run the data, change the parameters, run the data, change the parameters etc etc ad infinitum. This is because it is so quick and easy to do so. This approach will inevitably lead to over-optimisation and a system that works amazingly well in back testing but crashes and burns in real life! Disaster!
    An Engineer’s Perspective

After reading Kevin’s Book - Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems - it is pretty clear that his background as an engineer is central to his process. That is not to say you need to be an engineer or otherwise very mathematical to master it, but the attention to detail and precision that he uses is second to none.

His use of Monte Carlo Simulation and out-of-sample Walk Forward Testing, take data analysis and edge-proving to the next level. If you want to build winning algos like Kevin Davey builds winning algos, then you need to accept the necessity for this mathematical approach.

    Crypto Competition - It’s ON!

Trader Interview - David Cheetham, Chief Market Analyst at XTB - Technical and Fundamental Crypto Trading Background and Ideas

Friend-of-the-show David Cheetham returns to talk about crypto trading ahead of the launch of our Cryptoc Trading Competition on Saturday 11th December.

David is one of the most clued-up Bitcoin and crypto traders out there. He gives us a quick intro to the five cryptocurrencies you can trade in the competition: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Dash and Litecoin.

Although all five were for a long time closely correlated, in recent weeks Bitcoin has surged higher but the other major cryptos have lagged. David gives his thoughts on why this might be and how it will affect the competition.

We talk about technical trading approaches and fundamental or news trading approaches. David believes that the smaller size of the market actually makes cryptos more technically driven than some more established markets.

From a news perspective, we have covered on this show before how cryptos can be slow to react to news events, and it may be tricky to trade the news over a 30 day competition. However, David still believes it is possible and I am sure many of you will agree!
    Bitcoin Fork - 16th November
There is of course one big news event coming up that we cannot ignore!
Coming right after the start of the competition is a fork in Bitcoin. Discussion of this alone could take several podcasts, but listening to what David has to say will give you some foundation knowledge.
It is impossible to truly know what effect the fork will have on the price of Bitcoin, but what David is certain of is that it represents an opportunity.
You can’t trade without volatility and if you can get on the correct side of this, then maybe the fork will see some nice, trade-able moves!

Trader Interview - A Mathematical Basis for Intuitive Trading with Andre Minassian of intuitivetradinginstitute.com

Andre Minassian made a splash here at Two Blokes Trading HQ with his star turn in Episode 52 of the Two Blokes Trading podcast. One of the most talked about episodes in TBT history, his interview was truly unique.

Andre has long believed in trading from an ‘intuitive’ basis, and now he has teamed up with a mathematics prodigy who has created a mathematical algorithm to put rules in place that mimic Andre’s style.

The result is the Intuitive Trading Institute

By combining his intuitive style and a mathematical formula that harnesses and then builds on some of the principles that have served the hedge fund industry for many years, Andre is confident that he has built a uniquely successful trading style.

Andre is so confident in his system he has committed to winning the world trading championships in 2018.

Trader Interview - How to Find and Filter High Reward, Low Risk Trading Opportunities with The Macro Tourist, Kevin Muir

Owen has made no secret of his interest in bigger picture, research based trading, and Kevin’s Global Macro approach has got him all excited.

Kevin’s job is effectively to sit around reading anything and everything, formulate a hypothesis, and find a way to ‘express’ that through a position. This is, to Owen at least, the best job ever.

Kevin likes to be early to ideas (such as mining bitcoin when it was the low hundreds of dollars), but he also likes to ‘fade’ the big boys. No respector of hedge funds, he often makes money by betting against them.

Kevin is a humble chap with a sparkling intelligence that makes him a pleasure to listen to. He is also a tremendous writer and we highly recommend that you check out his blog at www.themacrotourist.com

His daily macro email is bursting with good ideas, and he clearly holds nothing back. If you want to trade macro or just have an interest in the markets, then The Macro Tourist has to be high on your reading list.

We asked Kevin for his personal reading list, and while the usual suspects are on there, he went one better and gave us his Twitter list! He suggests we all follow these 7 Tweeters to start sparking our own macro trading ideas:

    Jesse Felder @jessefelder
    Luke Gromen @LukeGromen
    The Long View @HayekAndKeynes   (geddit!?)
    Lawrence McDonald @Convertbond
    Macronomics @Macronomics1
    13D Research @WhatILearnedTW

There are 5 common mistakes that algo traders make - he outlines them here
Learn how to smooth drawdown and increase profits with a portfolio of algos applied to the same account size
Tom makes money applying regular trading ideas to Bitcoin

Trader Interview - 5 Biggest Algo Trading Mistakes with Edwin Cornelissen of Trade View

Eddie is a Systems Trader with Trade View. Trade View are at heart a prop trading firm and Eddie is closely involved in building and trading a portfolio of algorithms within the fund.

Eddie’s other role is as the friendly face of EA Lab! EA Lab is Trade View’s algorithm building software that allows traders to virtually any trading strategy using a drag and drop logic functionality that requires zero coding.

Knowing that the EA Lab software was built by real traders is part of what makes it so attractive.

A big element of what Eddie tries to achieve is convincing new clients to build algorithms based on models that have a high probability of success. He speaks to all different types of new and experienced traders. He sees a number of mistakes that are made, time and again, that hamper the ability of these traders to succeed.

The 5 Biggest Algo Trading Mistakes that Eddie Sees:

    1. Wanting to use a particular indicator or starting a strategy idea based on the indicator, rather than sound market principles.

    2. Having something in mind that you want to trade (strategy,  product, indicator), often with no valid reason.

    3. Being adamant something will work, even when their testing has proven that it has never worked in the past

    4. Not checking if their strategy is better suited to a different product or group of products

    5. Failing to build a an algo portfolio.

This last point is my favourite. I think most manual traders will accept the need to have more than one trading strategy. For some reason algo traders sometimes seem to believe that they can put all of their money in one algo on mone product and leave it.

Often individually, the results of an algo are consistent, but not impressive. As a portfolio, whether with more products or more strategies your results will be even more consistent and even more impressive.

If you have 1 algo that has 1% max drawdown and 10% gains, then when you overlay 10 algos on the same account you have a double benefit. Firstly you are unlikely to much increase the drawdown (the 1 percents won’t all happen at the same time) but equally the 10% gains are cumulative. You don’t even need more money - you can run the algos on the same account as long as you stay well within margin parameters.

Trader Interview - Charlie Burton - Ezeetrader.com - Remaining Vigilant in Ever-Changing Markets

Charlie Burton is a well known figure in the world of retail trading. His appearance on the BBC documentary ‘Traders: Millions by the Minute’ brought him firmly into the consciousness of the UK’s retail trader community.

Of course, his life’s work is much more than this one documentary! Charlie also runs Ezeetrader with Kym Watson (whom you’ll remember from Episode 54) and is an active trader, participating in the markets on a daily basis.

In well over a decade Charlie has tested, used, profited from and discarded many trading ‘systems’ or ‘edges’. Things that used to work no longer work, and he is a big believer in constantly renewing the details of his trading techniques.

    Innovate or Die

Charlie believes in changing markets, and counts adaptability as one of his key skills as a trader. What worked 5 years ago probably won’t work today, or if it does it may not work tomorrow.

But the only way you can be adaptable and be constantly tweaking existing systems and creating new edges is if you truly understand the markets; its mechanics and dynamics. Charlie Burton’s belief in educating yourself about the wider market but remaining focussed on the details that matter is what has enabled him to stay profitable over many years in all market conditions.

If you are planning on being long-term profitable (and I presume you are) then you really need to listen to this interview. The classic retail trader route of learning one (preferably mechanical) trading system and hoping to become rich is flawed - without constant innovation and reflection you will eventually fail.
Ali’s Backtesting Webinar Follow Up Q&A

Many of you have responded positively to the backtesting webinar and downloaded the brochure, booked a call or became paid up members of Ali Crooks’ Traders Support Club trading room.

We had a few questions about backtesting itself, and Ali received some directly. Since many of these questions overlap, he has put together a short video to answer them all in one go. You can view the video at www.twoblokestrading.com/traders-support-club
