    In this episode:

Owen makes profit in his first full month live trading as a technical trader
    Tom has bugs
David Cheetham discusses bitcoin trading strategies
You can use CFDs to hedge, go short or profit from short term sentiment
We discuss the great Bitcoin debate - is it more important to be ‘right’ than to make money?

Trader Interview - David Cheetham from XTB - Short Term Bitcoin Trading Strategies

David collects his ceremonial hat trick ball, although none of us are sure if maybe he’s actually been on four times… David is Chief Technical Analyst for XTB, profitably trades his own personal account, and is a keen watcher of the Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency phenomenon.

We discussed Owen’s cheeky strategy - buy and hold the physical assets in a basket of cryptocurrencies, so gaining long-only exposure, but short using a CFD trade in the event of bad news. David pointed out that this not only hedges you against the risk of deep retrenchments in the up-trend, it also generates more capital to buy in again at the bottom on the pullback. (Provided you are correct, of course…)

A classic example discussed is the recent tumble from 5000 USD for Bitcoin to 3000 USD. These were not entirely random levels - they were called by many people - and a CFD short to those levels and a rebuy at the bottom would have been the perfect trade!

Of course it is easy with hindsight, but it suggests that there may be a workable strategy here!
Bitcoin News Takes Longer than Forex

One of the interesting topics of discussion was the idea that news takes a lot longer to be factored into the price of Bitcoin than it does with Forex or well-traded shares.

The reasons are obvious - there are far fewer institutional players, banks, hedge funds and big-hitting algorithms trading Bitcoin and the alt-coins than there are trading GBPUSD or Apple shares. So, when bad or good news strikes, there isn’t a scramble to be first to act.

David pointed out that there may actually be even more ‘lag’ than Owen thought - the pressure from the Chinese regulators that is thought to have sent Bitcoin tumbling was actually building steam for a good week before the fall.

Partly then, this means that quite apart from scrambling to act, if you are planning to short Bitcoin or other cryptos then the best idea may in fact be to wait for a confirmation candle (perhaps a bearish daily candle) before getting in short.  The moves tend to be deep and long so you are unlikely to miss much!
    Not Bitcoin Trading Strategy Experts!

But, of course, we are just speculating. None of this is investment advice! Particularly in this Bitcoin trading strategies department, no-one has been doing this long enough to justify calling themselves an expert - we are all learning!

One thing we are sure of, though, is that as a trader it is more important to make money than be right about Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency arena is hugely divisive, and although David is long-term bearish, he is happy to just make money from trading and ultimate doesn’t care if he is right or wrong on the future of Bitcoin! Owen heartily agrees.

Ep. 70 - The Advantages of Discretionary Trading with Will Hunting

    In this episode:

Owen Buys the Dip and finds that it wasn’t, after all, the dip
Tom finally exits the trade of his life
Will Hunting is a discretionary trader who tells us how he does it
He outlines his belief in discretion trading vs data driven trading
Will gives his tips on how to continuously improve and stay safe as a discretionary trader
Trader Interview - Will Hunting - WMD4X.com - The Advantages of Discretionary Trading

Will Hunting sold his manufacturing business at 33 and retired. He soon unretired when he realised that was boring as hell. He promptly took up trading. Over a 12+ year career Will has perfected 3 core trading styles, all of them discretionary: Momentum, Flow and Patterns. In this interview he goes into some detail on those, but you can find out much more on his website.

Will can regularly be seen making live calls on Twitter @wmd4x, and even though his style is not to use years of backtested data, he still is unerringly accurate. We don’t believe in dogmatic trading here on Two Blokes Trading and neither does Will - he is a chap who shows that there are a million different ways to be a profitable trader!

We went to ‘the Twitter’ for questions for Will and got some great response - he answers a few on the show, although we didn’t have time for everyone’s questions.

    Also the finished article

Beyond his trading style and some true gems for discretionary traders out there, Will also has a superb view of life - it is safe to say that his universal life philosophy is very far removed from Brannigan’s last week! Will certainly agrees with Tom when it comes to getting inspiration from Twitter talking heads and their inspirational yoga quotes…!

    XTB - Negative Balance Protection

We can’t emphasise enough how momentous it is that XTB have now started to offer Negative Balance Protection. They are the first FCA regulated broker to do so, and it comes into effect from 1st October 2017.

What it means is that if there is another ‘black swan’ event like the SNB disaster of January 2015 - when the Swiss National Bank pulled the ‘floor’ from under the Swiss Franc and sent it plunging - then you will not be able to lose more than the amount in your trading account! I for one, I will sleep easier at night…

    In this episode:

Owen buys the Litecoin top! Does his entry mean the crypto party is all over!?
Tom has the trade of his life (almost!)
Brannigan Barratt spends his days teaching trading strategy development and imparts some of his accumulated wisdom on the Two Blokes
He discusses his theory: Development Principles -> Practical Application -> Strategy Development
Brannigan believes in Ray Dalio’s ideas of ‘progression, progression, progression’
Tom dismisses ‘personal improvement’ as hippy nonsense but Owen loves it!
Trader Interview - Brannigan Barrett from Axia Futures - Trading Strategy Development

Brannigan Barrett is a young prop trader who has built a wealth of experience in a few short years. A triathlete, he takes the maxim ‘no junk miles’ and applies ‘no junk time’ to his trading hours. Always learning, always wanting to improve, he has created and optimised countless trading strategies. Today he talks to the Two Blokes about the mindset and the practical activity he applies to ensure a winning methodology for trading strategy development.

Brannigan has a pretty fixed trading philosophy - he believes that there is no fixed way to trade! He doesn’t believe in rights or wrongs in trading only ‘probabilities’. He also doesn’t believe you need to know everything about trading, just to become an expert at one thing - aim for world class! - and you will be able to trade your way to riches. Being a jack-of-all-trades is not the way to make money in the markets!

Creating Strategies Requires a Creative Touch!

Through his work at Axia Futures, Brannigan does a lot of mentoring of new students. One of the things he is always asked is a) does he have a trading strategy he can show them and b) how do they develop their own trading strategies? It sounds like he is much more in favour of the latter! Give a man a net and he will feed his family for a lifetime…

Creating a trading strategy is not easy. It requires the hardest thing of all: a creative spark. Even if someone hands you a strategy on a plate it is not guaranteed that you will not be able to trade it for profit if you don’t put your own stamp on it. Trading someone else’s system with no personal touch is as bad as trading a ‘tip’. Ideally, create your own strategy by applying the ‘no junk time’ method of learning by doing.
    Always Be Learning

Owen agrees with Brannigan, there are a million different ways to trade profitably; you can’t be dogmatic. As they agree, the markets are a moving feast and neither your trading system nor you personally can stand still, or you will find yourself quickly left behind!

Tom doesn’t really go in for the ‘hippy stuff’, but Owen doesn’t mind admitting that he is a big fan of ‘personal improvement’ books. Brannigan recommends ‘Tools of Titans’ by Tim Ferris.

Owen will be reading that, and secretly suspects Tom will have a look too.

    Progression! Progression! Progression!

    Tom mugs him off

Trader Interview - Ali Crooks - Traders Support Club - How to Launch a Live Trading System

Ali Crooks is taking home the match ball after completing his hat trick. Three appearances on the show must surely rank amongst his all-time life achievements. We didn’t ask him though, in case he disagreed. Awks.

This episode comes flying out the blocks with some thunderous knowledge bombs being dropped left, right and charlie by Mr Crooks. He explains why you should backtest your live trading results every few months. That’s right, backtest your live trades after you’ve taken them. No one loves a backtest like Ali Crooks loves a backtest!

    Data Driven

Ali’s data-driven approach to trading will be familiar to listeners of the show. And they’ll be pleased to hear that he doesn’t allow Owen to slack off now that he is live trading the strategies. Owen wants to introduce 12 more currency pairs that he hasn’t actually tested. Ali gives him short shrift on this one, natch.

This opens up a wider debate on whether we can expect all currency pairs to behave in the same way technically - or at least to the point that, if it sets up on your technical criteria then it must act in the right way for it to be tradeable under that system...if that makes sense. No?

Owen considers binning the worst performing 10 or 15 currencies in a year but Ali wonders if that is actually just random distribution...answers on a postcard please!

    Knackered

Owen has a good old fashioned whinge on this episode. Having settled on a ‘swing’ trading system that allows him to trade around work or business activities, he has now realised that this means he has to trade late at night or early in the morning.

Pay attention Owen, come on man!
    WEBINAR

Ali Crooks is a backtesting guru. He bloody loves it.

On the podcast he has talked extensively about why every trader should backtest. But a 30 minute interview is not long enough to explain in detail exactly how you should backtest.

So by popular demand he has agreed to do a special 2 hour webinar exclusively for the Two Blokes Trading audience: How to Backtest.*

Owen takes credit for Tom’s success
We interview profitable retail trader Roy ‘NorseFX’ Sivertsen
Owen tries to take credit for his success as well…
Roy explains how he uses automated entries and manual exits in his hybrid trading system
Roy tells his story from losing ‘tip follower’ to winning trend follower!

Trader Interview - Roy Sivertsen - NorseFX - The Key to Successful Trading? Don’t Quit!

Follow Roy on Instagram, YouTube or on norsefx.com

Roy has been trading since 2014 and has been through the same journey as many, many people listening to this show. First getting into trading off the back of ‘tips’ and (surprise!) losinga big wedge, he was fortunate to be an observant chap and realised that despite it all, the markets did in fact make patterns.

After a foray into penny shares trading and a brush with holding an unwanted position in an illiquid market, Roy realised that Forex trading was the way forward.

Enter another tip! Turns out that when someone says ‘just sell EURUSD, you can’t lose’, you almost certainly will lose. Of course he sold the bottom and experienced another painful lesson. Sound familiar?

But, Roy is a natural trader it seems, and once he applied the thing between his ears and linked it with what his eyes were showing him, he started to identify patterns in the Forex markets too. He is now sitting pretty after a year of consistent profits. His key to successful trading? Don’t quit!

    Don’t Quit

We get a lot of emails asking what it takes to be a successful trader; how did we manage to turn the corner into profit etc. The answer is always the same - don’t quit! It would have been much more embarrasing for us to quit given that loads of people were listening to our failures (and occasional triumphs) on the podcast every week...but it was still hard to keep going at times!

Both Tom and I are now up and running trading and believe ourselves to be capable of making consistent profits, purely by refusing to give up until we made it work.

But we won’t claim to have cracked successful trading until we have put together a much more sustained run!

If you have had a challenging start to your trading career, just listen back to this episode and keep Roy in mind. He had the same difficulties and he lost money in the markets, but he never let go of the dream of being a successful  trader, and sure enough his hard work is now paying off!

    Trading Competition

A number of you got in touch to say you would be interested in a trading competition if we ran one. So we will be ploughing ahead, but with a slight twist! You will need to tune in next week to find out more...

We launch a trading competition. Kind of.
Patrick Munnelly from Littlefish FX talks about personal performance management
He also tells us what makes a trader a success at his prop trading company
Patrick has a vacancy! If you ever wanted to work at a prop trading firm, now is your chance!

Trader Interview - Patrick Munnelly of Littlefish FX - Personal Performance Management

Patrick is the head trader at Littlefish FX. He has successfully trained many profitable traders, Having seen both good and bad traders, Patrick helps us pinpoint the personal traits of consistently profitable traders.

If Patrick had a watchword it would be ‘reflection’. This is a man that rivals episode 61’s Andy Demi for trade journaling detail. Self reflection, it seems, is the key to being a profitable trader. Or, at least, one of the keys. Sadly, Patrick confirms, there is still no single ‘magic ingredient’ to make yourself wildly profitable!

Personal performance management is as important as managing the performance of your trading strategy itself. If you are not in the right place to trade, it doesn’t matter how good your strategy is.

Patrick knows what makes him tick and can manage himself - think of it like a high-performance athlete getting ‘in the zone’ before big race. This is something that The Blokes are focussing on at the moment, so it is a timely chat!
Work at a Prop Trading Firm!

After successfully educating many profitable traders, the chaps at Littlefish FX recently launched a prop trading firm. The first class has graduated, and he is now looking to bring through the next generation of traders.

Patrick says that experience is not necessary - he is looking for the right kind of people. If you are wondering if you are indeed the right kind of person, then you need to listen to the episode!

There aren’t many opportunities to work in prop trading that are easy to get into without a trading track record. The problem is, how do you get the track record? Patrick is offering to take on people with no record at all, if he thinks he can make them profitable.

Interested? Then he is waiting to hear from you: [email protected]
    Trading Competition

To counterbalance all the risky martingale (ahem) and crypto trading chat from the last few weeks, we have decided to launch a trading competition that promotes trading like a pro - low drawdown, incremental gains, happy days!

We’ll only do it if enough people are interested, so do let us know if you are up for it. It will be a demo trading account with everyone starting at the same amount.

This is the ‘Risky’ episode! Something slightly different here today - someone even says the words ‘martingale system’. SHOCK! HORROR! OUTRAGE! Danger-signs up and hard hats on then ladies and gents.
Tom magically records a podcast despite being on Safari in Africa (lies!)
Your Traders Support Club questions answered
Tom talks about turning one of his profitable trading systems into an algorithm. He has made great progress with ‘Matt the Developer’ and is seeing some great returns (...in testing!)
José Ricaurte Jaen returns to the show to talk about his philosophy of high-risk, high-yield trading systems
José believes that a scientific approach to risk limitation can offer opportunities for high-yield trading strategies.
    We laugh at Tom’s misfortune

Trader Interview - José Ricaurte Jaen - High Yield Trading Strategies

José Ricaurte Jaen is a balls-out trader.

He has a different perspective to the ‘safety first’ approach of many trading educators and commentators. He believes that if, for example, you have a $10,000 account, there is very little point in trading really small and safe to mak 10% and…$1000 in a year.

José believes that the risk of blowing up your account is worth taking if the reward could be turning your $10,000 into $100,000! Well, maybe he’s just being provocative, but I suppose he has a point about time invested to money made.

As he himself says - people will probably throw rocks at him in the streets for saying this, but at least he is honest!

    Martingale System …. ! ….?

José also dropped the words ‘martingale system’ into the conversation just to wind us up! But, in truth, his ‘doubling down’ is not a martingale system, but a way of getting in at a discount when you still believe in your trade direction, even if stopped out.

This is not everyone’s approach, and Jose makes it clear that it is not suitable for all traders. But, he is developing an algorithmic approach based on the mathematical data that he believes will enable him to make big returns on a high yield trading system.

You can follow Jose at https://twitter.com/JoseRicaurteJ
    Tom’s Algo Chat

Tom has been secretly squirreling away developing an algorithm based on one of his currently profitable trading systems.

Though, given that he almost never stops talking about it, it’s not really that secret.

In testing he did over 100% on one currency pair with about 15% drawdown. Another one for the risky episode! Of course, in the real world the idea would be to spread that trading amount over 10 currency pairs.

This means at one tenth of the trading size, the profit would be 10% and the drawdown 1.5% (theoretically).

Stack up 10 currency pairs and the profit should still be hitting roughly the 100% mark again, but it is unlikely that all 1.5% drawdowns would exactly align - thus limiting the largest drawdown but keeping the same overall profit. Smart huh?

But...of course...this is all a bit pie in the sky until it is real. As Tom is fond of saying - it’s not a thing until it is a thing!

Owen opens up on his struggle to refine his reversal trading system. With the coaching from Traders Support Club he is getting to the right place.
Tom reveals that he is in comfortable profit for the year and is really benefiting from applying TSC mentalities to his already established technical trading systems
In part 2 of our Traders Support Club Risk Management series, Martin Dimitrov talks about position sizing, money management and how to apply data science to your trading.
He teaches us to challenge the way of thinking that we have been taught all our lives, apply data to a new pragmatic approach, throw away absolutes and attack our trading like a professional.
Trader Interview - Martin Dimitrov from Traders Support Club - Position Sizing

Martin Dimitrov brought his calculator to this interview! Martin is one of the smartest traders we have met; seeing everything through the prism of the data.

By taking a mathematical approach to trading, with focus on position sizing and money management, Martin has devised and traded for big profits a number of unique trading systems.

We discuss structured data versus unstructured data and the realities of the hard graft that you need to put in to create a position sizing strategy that knows when to ease off and when to ‘go for the jugular’.

But, caution is the watchword - having blown up several accounts as a new trader, Martin now applies maths, logic and pragmatism to every trading decision he makes.
    A New Way of Thinking

Aside from his focus on structured data and mathematically proven ‘edges’ and position sizing, Martin is also an advocate of the ‘question everything’ approach to trading (and indeed, life itself!).

Martin regularly encourages us to question Ali and himself in their coaching. He wants us to question what we are told by others as well as our own preconceived notions.

Martin is fond of a particular example: if you flip a coin 1000 times and get 1000 ‘heads’ in a row, what is the chance that you will get heads next?

If you said 50% then bad luck - you’re wrong. In real-world truth, not GCSE textbook maths, the answer is ‘you will almost certainly get heads, because this coin is clearly weighted’!

He calls us to throw away our old way of thinking, realise that pragmatic truth is the only truth in trading, apply the data to this way of thinking and go at our trading like it is a serious business.

Martin has tens of thousands of manually backtested trades stored on spreadsheets and indelibly imprinted on his mind - this is why he is a fountain of new trading ‘edges’ and aims to make large, consistent profits year on year. Sit up and listen folks!

Siam ‘The Crypto’ Kidd returns to build on last week’s reasons why, with this week’s ways how to make money from cryptos
Owen complete’s his u-turn to explain why he is now open minded to cryptos and maybe he was just being a wuss before.

Trader Interview - Siam Kidd of The Realistic Trader - How to Profit from the Coming Cryptocurrency Bubble

Siam Kidd wins his hat trick ball with his third appearance on Two Blokes Trading. Today he builds on his previous interview on episode 62 giving us his 7 Reasons Why he is now looking at cryptocurrencies. In this episode he tells you how he is planning to profit from the coming cryptocurrency boom, and how you can too.

He admits that the massive Bitcoin rush is probably a bubble. But he says if you acknowledge that and pay attention it is possible to get into the cryptocurrency bubble early, ride it and get out before the bang!

Siam believes that cryptocurrencies and blockchain are going to revolutionise the world, destroying established business models and eventually replacing fiat currencies.

If he is even half right, this is something we need to pay attention to!
    Become a Crypto Tracker Fund

Siam’s suggested methodology is to turn yourself into a tracker fund. He believes that picking new ICO cryptocurrencies in this bubble is a fool's game.

He compares it to buying speculative penny shares - picking the correct one is virtually impossible. But, if you turn yourself into a cryptocurrency tracker and buy ALL OF THEM then you can effectively profit from the general market bubble without being over exposed to any individual cryptocurrency bubble.

Is this the right idea? ...Do Your Own Research! Caveat Emptor etc. To me it makes logical sense. But I haven’t done the maths on whether you will make money if, for instance, half of the cryptos you buy just die out, and one goes to the moon. So if you want to do this, then make sure you do the research!

Investing or Trading the Cryptocurrency Bubble

Siam Kidd tells us not to trade cryptocurrencies, but to invest in them. Tom is currently minded to do just that and avoid the short term trading.

Owen tells us that he has opened his mind to the idea of trading cryptos. They seem to move in sync with each other based on the big moves in either Bitcoin or Ethereum. Owen’s theory is that if you can keep your eyes open and understand what is driving price, then you can take advantage of that in exactly the same way as you can with Forex.

The larger volatility can be risky, but volatility is also what drives profit. So, again, make up your own mind! But, there is a growing body of resources out there to learn. The Ashraif Laidi webinar helped Owen a lot and he is attending the free Cypto Masterclass in London on 19th August. If you are interested in the sector then I’d recommend coming and saying hi!

Trader Interview - Siam Kidd of The Realistic Trader - 7 Reasons Why You Need to Pay Attention to Cryptocurrencies

This is Siam Kidd’s second appearance on the show. Last time he explained the ‘Lamborghini’ trade trend following approach that he advocates on therealistictrader.com
This time he is here to talk to us about Bitcoin, Ethereum, Blockchain, Smart Contracts and the coming cryptocurrencies revolution! Siam used to be vociferously against investing time or money in cryptos, but he has now come round to a realisation that this is the way the world is going.
He gives us his 7 reasons why he used to be against cryptos, and 7 reasons why he now thinks that they must form a part of a our thinking over the next decade.

    7 Reasons Why

First new financial market since 1694 - first money will flirt then pile in. We are still in flirting stage
3.2 billion people still don’t have access to the internet. When they come online in the next decade they will fly into all new technologies like blockchain
The market cap of cryptocurrencies is exploding, even though there are only an estimated 15 million accounts and probably fewer than 5 million individual investors. What happens when the public actually get involved?
Blockchain technologies will consume the planet - the Facebook and Google of blockchain have yet to be invented
Blockchain will kill all middlemen business and change the face of commerce
Cryptocurrencies are the best hedge against government and central bank interference and financial pandemics
Cryptos are the biggest bubble in human history. This is a massive OPPORTUNITY to get in, ride it, and exit before the BANG!

This was one of our most exciting interviews to date, and comes at a time when The Blokes (and I daresay a number of our listeners) are really beginning to look at cryptocurrencies. We are at the start of a new world in technology, and now is the time to get ahead of the curve and pay attention to cryptocurrencies!
Siam Kidd will return next week in Part 2 of his interview.
