In this episode of Old Guy Sports, we take a ride back to the days when racing was raw, loud, and deeply personal. Before the bright lights of modern motorsports, there were the dirt tracks—where engines roared, dust filled the air, and families gathered for unforgettable nights.

The Old Guy shares heartfelt memories of attending races with his dad at Heidelberg Raceway, including the wild and unforgettable figure 8 racing that kept fans on the edge of their seats. We also visit Lernerville Speedway, a western Pennsylvania staple that became a weekly tradition for so many racing fans.

    Along the way, we explore:

    • The role of dirt tracks in the history of American racing
    • How grassroots racing inspired generations of young drivers and fans
    • Legendary drivers who got their start on dirt
    • The sense of community that made these tracks so special

Miss Amy brings her signature humor and curiosity—especially after seeing figure 8 racing for the very first time!

  • Episode 49 - Let's Go to the NFL Draft !!!

In this episode of Old Guy Sports, we take a fun and nostalgic journey through the complete history of the NFL Draft, from its humble beginnings in a smoky Philadelphia hotel room in 1936 to the massive prime-time spectacle it has become today.

We begin with the very first draft on February 8, 1936, featuring just 9 teams, 9 rounds, and 81 total selections, and explore the fascinating story of Jay Berwanger, the first-ever No. 1 pick who never played a single NFL snap. We also look at how only 24 of the 81 drafted players actually made it to the league, while still producing four Hall of Famers.

From there, we trace how the draft evolved through the decades, focusing on the rise of true scouting departments, the brilliance of Steelers super scout Bill Nunn, and the legendary 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers draft class, widely considered one of the greatest of all time. We also spotlight 1983, the “Year of the Quarterback,” featuring John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino.

The evolution of Mr. Irrelevant, from the very last pick in 1936 to modern success stories

Plenty of fun banter with Miss Amy, including her mission to convince the Old Guy to head to Pittsburgh for this year’s NFL Draft

A great mix of football history, storytelling, nostalgia, and laughs.

  • Episode 45 - Winter Olympics - A Trip Back in Time

This week we lace up the skates and travel back to the Winter Olympics of the 1960s and 1970s — when families gathered around a flickering black-and-white TV and every USA vs. USSR matchup felt bigger than sports.

The Old Guy shares warm, funny memories of growing up glued to the couch with his parents and siblings — Mom and sis cheering figure skating, while Dad and the boys lived for hockey, skiing, and anything fast or dangerous.

We revisit the era’s heroes and legends: Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Billy Kidd, Barbara Ann Cochran, Jean-Claude Killy, the Soviet hockey machine, and more — plus a nod to later great Scott Hamilton.

  • Episode 44 - Sports Funnies...When Sports Were Something to Laugh At...

There was a time when sports didn’t always wear a suit and tie.

Before every debate became a courtroom argument, before every player had a brand, and before every moment was immediately ranked, clipped, and monetized, sports were allowed to be funny. Not “commercial funny.” Not “viral funny.” Just plain, accidental, belly-laugh funny.

In this episode, we take a look at some of the funny, and weird, side of sports. Whether its the odd ball nature of the games, the strangeness that surrounds some players, or the pure joy that comes from sports themed cartoons, we are sure you will love this episode.

Looking back, it’s clear that a lot of love for sports didn’t start with standings or championships. It started with spinach-fueled uppercuts, rabbits striking out entire teams, dogs breaking every bone in their bodies, and little bald kids believing again.

Enjoy... If you laugh, share a memory, or shake your head and say “they would never allow that now”…

    …then we did our job.

  • Episode 43 - Professional Wrestling - Saturday with Bruno, Rosie, and The Boys

This week on The Old Guy Sports Podcast, we step into the smoky TV studios of 1960s Pittsburgh, where Saturday nights meant Studio Wrestling, Chilly Billy Cardille, Ringside Rosie, and heroes like Bruno Sammartino, Gorilla Monsoon, and Haystacks Calhoun.

The Old Guy shares what it was like growing up when Mom hated it, Dad allowed it, and kids believed every punch. And then again, when a whole new generation of his own kids enjoys wrestling just as much as he did.

With Miss Amy’s playful skepticism, heartfelt storytelling, and reflections on why wrestling has endured for generations, this episode is a nostalgic look at heroes, villains, and the bonds built from one generation of Saturday nights to the next.
