The Lord has sworn with an uplifted hand, that He will fight with Amalek from generation to generation. That is because they attacked Israel from behind those who were lagging behind and killed them. Hired Baalam to curse them. Since they lifted up their hand against His throne, they got back what they have sown. In the battle against Amalek, Moses only had to lift his rod up on the moutain, and Joshua was to fight them down and as it was prolonged, Mosed needed to be supported by Aaron and Hur. To celebrate the victory , Moses built an altar and named it "Yahweh is my banner". It resulted in a great testimony.

Israel has come out of Egypt hardly 4 weeks ago, they have forgotten all the miracles, now they are grumbling about lack of food. They were saying if only we died by the Lord's hand while still in Egypt: what they are actually saying is they wanted to live a life without any reference to God forgetting all the miracles.
