Für den ONpodcast im Oktober haben wir das Kölner Kollektiv Demask gebeten, uns Künstler:innen aus ihrem Netzwerk vorzustellen. Sie schlugen uns die simbabwische Performancekünstlerin und Aktivistin Jordan Chanetsa vor, Host der beiden Episoden zu werden! Jordan ist Artist in Residence des partizipativen Residenzprogramms von Demask, In-Haus e.V. und der Akademie der Künste der Welt.

«In this episode, I have decided to spotlight the work of a black trans* artist from Harare Zimbabwe. I am also a trans* artist from Harare Zimbabwe, therefore it is important for me to be able to share work created by other people who are creating from the same context that I have originated from. Mandhla is someone that I admire and whose work I value. I appreciate the time and work they have put into their craft and the reverence with which they create their sounds. For me, these sounds are important to be shared as firstly, representation is important, but secondly because the provide a soundscape that has been created in a very emotive way. This episode will take us on a journey into the world of sound created by Mandhla and we will ger a chance to look into her world of music and how she chooses to share her thoughts and feelings. We will also get a chance to listen to some unreleased music given to us specially for this episode by Mandhla herself.» – Jordan Chanetsa

Mandhla Ndubiwa ist eine trans-feminine, nicht geschlechtskonforme Multimedia-Performance-Künstlerin, die in Simbabwe, Afrika, geboren und aufgewachsen ist. Derzeit lebt sie in Berlin und kombiniert eine Mischung aus experimenteller R&B- und Soul-Musik mit visuellen Projektionen und performativem Tanz. Ihre Musik erzählt von den alltäglichen Herausforderungen, die Trans, enby und femme* Immigrantinnen in Bezug auf Liebe, Identität, Sex und Akzeptanz erleben.

Mandhla hat ihre Arbeit auf verschiedenen Bühnen, wie auf dem Whole Festival, Pop Kultur, den Münchner Kammerspielen, dem Gropius Bau, der Kulturbraurei und dem HAU, Hebbel am Ufer, gezeigt. Als große Liebhaberin von visueller Schönheit, Mode, der Kunst des Voguing und der Musik “spricht sie zu den Seelen, die durch ihre Arbeit gelebt haben und weiter leben, und verspricht eine Erfahrung voller Schönheit, wilder Queerness und schwarzer Femme*-Power”. Jordan Chanetsa ist eine multidisziplinäre Künstlerin und Aktivistin für LGBTQIA+ Rechte und arbeitet als Beraterin für Gleichberechtigung, Vielfalt und Inklusion im Arbeitsfeld. Jordan ist Gründungsmitglied des Harare Queer Collective (HQ), das sich für die Schaffung sicherer Räume für LGBTQIA+ Menschen in Simbabwe einsetzt.

Als Moderatorin und Medienpersönlichkeit spricht sie in Radiosendungen und Podcasts regelmäßig die schwierige Realität der LGBTQIA+-Gemeinschaft in Simbabwe an und ist Gastgeberin der “The Naked Truth Show”, einer Sendung, die sich mit Geschlecht, Sexualität und Gesundheit befasst. Für den Podcast “Her Hour” (Play Afrika TV) produzierte Chanetsa unter anderem eine Sonderausgabe mit der US-Botschafterin in Simbabwe zum Pride Month. 2019 wurde Chanetsa von der niederländischen Botschaft in Simbabwe für ihr Engagement im Rahmen der Kampagne “16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence” geehrt. Chanetsa wurde außerdem ausgewählt, um am “Young Leaders Program” von “Women Deliver” teilzunehmen, einer Organisation, die sich für die Gleichstellung der Geschlechter sowie für die Gesundheit und Rechte von Mädchen und Frauen einsetzt. Von Juni bis Oktober 2022 ist Jordan Chanetsa Artist-in-Residence im Rahmen des Participatory Residency Program, das von der ADKDW zusammen mit DEMASK Kollektiv und Integrationshaus e.V. organisiert wird.

Ein neuer Walk and Talk, im Juni initiiert von Shuoxin Tan, Mitglied des kollaborativen algorithmischen Netzwerk-Musik-Ensembles [ _ _ _ ]. Die Themen wurden wie üblich improvisiert, die drei Ensemblemitglieder hörten einander zu und nahmen es einfach über Jitsi auf. Jedoch konnten die aufgenommenen Klangereignisse nie von allen gleich gehört werden – wie können wir durch Artikulation im Netzwerk einen Ort definieren?

»Drei Platzhalter, die in einem Raum zwischen leeren Orten sitzen«. So beschreibt sich das Ensemble [ _ _ _ ] selbst. Es wurde 2020 von den Künstler*innen Shuoxin Tan, Li Song und Jia Liu gegründet, um Musik für das Netz zu komponieren. Shuoxin Tan wurde in Peking geboren und arbeitet als Komponistin und Klangkünstlerin in Köln. Sie forscht in den Bereichen algorithmische Akustik, Klangontologie und Lacansche Topologie. Li Song ist Musiker und Softwareentwickler und lebt in London. Er komponiert Musik für Computer und akustische Instrumente. Jia Liu ist Komponistin und Computermusik-Performerin. Sie lebt in Karlsruhe und arbeitet derzeit an algorithmischer Musik und Komposition für autonome Systeme.

Die drei Mitglieder teilen das gleiche Interesse an algorithmischer Akustik und Komposition, SuperCollider und Live Coding. Können Algorithmen kollaborativ sein? Was passiert, wenn der Borromäische Knoten auf Netzwerkstrukturen für kollaborative algorithmische Komposition angewendet wird? Der Mechanismus für die Datenkommunikation wurde während des Covid-Lockdowns im Jahr 2020 von Grund auf neu entwickelt, wobei die Programmiersprache SuperCollider zum Einsatz kam. Ihre Forschung und Praxis bewegt sich zwischen Komposition und Improvisation und verkörpert die neue Form der Computermusikperformance mit theoretischem Denken.

The topics were improvised as usual, and they listened to each other while recording it simply via Jitsi. Meanwhile, the recorded sound events could never be heard as the same by each individual – how could we define a place by articulation through networks?

»Three placeholders sitting in a room between empty spaces.« This is how the ensemble [ _ _ _ ] describes itself. It was founded in 2020 by the artists Shuoxin Tan, Li Song, and Jia Liu, to compose music for the network. Shuoxin Tan was born in Beijing and works as a composer and sound artist in Cologne. She researches algorithmic acoustics, sound ontology and Lacanian topology. Li Song is a musician and software developer based in London. He composes music for computers and acoustic instruments. Jia Liu is a composer and computer music performer. She lives in Karlsruhe and is currently working on algorithmic music and composition for autonomous systems.

The three members share the same interest in algorithmic acoustics and composition, SuperCollider and live coding. Can algorithms be collaborative? What happens when the Borromean knot is applied to network structures for collaborative algorithmic composition? The data communication mechanism was developed from scratch during the Covid lockdown in 2020, adopting the programming language SuperCollider.

Another walk and talk hosted by Shuoxin Tan, one of the members from collaborative algorithmic network-music ensemble [ _ _ _ ]. The topics were improvised as usual, and they listened to each other while recording it simply via Jitsi. Meanwhile, the recorded sound events could never be heard as the same by each individual – how could we define a place by articulation through networks?

»Three placeholders sitting in a room between empty spaces.« This is how the ensemble [ _ _ _ ] describes itself. It was founded in 2020 by the artists Shuoxin Tan, Li Song, and Jia Liu, to compose music for the network. Shuoxin Tan was born in Beijing and works as a composer and sound artist in Cologne. She researches algorithmic acoustics, sound ontology and Lacanian topology. Li Song is a musician and software developer based in London. He composes music for computers and acoustic instruments. Jia Liu is a composer and computer music performer. She lives in Karlsruhe and is currently working on algorithmic music and composition for autonomous systems.

The three members share the same interest in algorithmic acoustics and composition, SuperCollider and live coding. Can algorithms be collaborative? What happens when the Borromean knot is applied to network structures for collaborative algorithmic composition? The data communication mechanism was developed from scratch during the Covid lockdown in 2020, adopting the programming language SuperCollider.

Damian T. Dziwis ist ein Komponist und Ingenieur an der Schnittstelle von disruptiven Technologien. In seinen Werken nutzt er künstliche Intelligenz, generative Algorithmen, virtuelle Umgebungen und Quantencomputer. Dabei variiert der Einsatz von multimedialen Inhalten, akustischen Instrumenten, Akusmatik und Live Coding ständig. Er ist Dozent an der Peter Behrens School of Arts, wo er Creative Coding für audiovisuelle Medien unterrichtet. Außerdem promoviert er an der TU Berlin und der TH Köln im Bereich Spatial Audio und Machine Learning für Komposition und immersive Medien.

Christian Banasik (geb. 1963), Komponist und Dozent, lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf. Er studierte Komposition und Live-Elektronik bei Günther Becker und Dimitri Terzakis an der Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf sowie bei Hans Zender an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main. Seine Instrumentalwerke und die elektronischen Stücke wurden in Konzerten und Radioprogrammen in Europa sowie in Nord- und Südamerika, Asien und Australien aufgeführt. Banasik ist Dozent für Audiovisuelles Design (Medienkomposition / Sound) an der Hochschule Düsseldorf / Peter Behrens School of Arts und Mitglied des Instituts für Bild und Medien an der PBSA. Neben Live-Elektronik und Instrumentalmusik produzierte Banasik auch Hörspiele, Filmmusik, audiovisuelle Werke und Musiktheater.

Machine Autonomy in Music. How does artificial intelligence change our understanding of creativity and its results? Does the autonomous Automaton exist? And is that then still real art?

Damian T. Dziwis is a composer and engineer at the intersection of disruptive technologies. In his works he uses artificial intelligence, generative algorithms, virtual environments and quantum computers. In the process, the use of multimedia content, acoustic instruments, acousmatics and live coding varies continuously. He is a lecturer at the Peter Behrens School of Arts where he teaches Creative Coding for audiovisual media. He is also doing his PhD at the TU Berlin and TH Köln in the field of Spatial Audio and Machine Learning for composition and immersive media.

Christian Banasik (born 1963), composer and lecturer, lives and works in Dusseldorf.
