  • Detroit Hits Pause on Water Shut-Offs
Activists have been pushing for years to get the city of Detroit to stop shutting off water service to homes that fall behind on payments. Now, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s exactly what’s happening. On today's episode, you'll hear about the city’s decision to extend a water shut-off moratorium, put in place early in the pandemic, through 2022. We talk to a reporter who has been covering the years-long fight to stop the shut-offs, and an activist who has been on the front lines of that effort.
    GUESTS:
Sarah Cwiek is a Michigan Radio reporter based in Detroit.
Monica Lewis-Patrick is a longtime Detroit activist and president of We the People Detroit.

  • Saving the Great Lakes
Pretty much everyone in Michigan has some kind of story about the Great Lakes—whether it’s summer swims, or ice fishing, or enjoying a sunrise or sunset along the shore. Unfortunately, there are some major threats to the health of the state’s most beloved natural resource. The cover story in the December issue of National Geographic takes a deep dive into some of them.
In the magazine you’ll find dramatic photos of massive algal blooms and surging floodwaters, as well as up-close portraits of invasive species that are disrupting the local ecosystems. We talked to the two journalists behind the piece.
    GUESTS:
Tim Folger, National Geographic contributing writer and contributing editor at Discover Magazine
Keith Ladzinski, filmmaker and photographer at National Geographic

At a moment where politicians of all stripes are trying to figure out their post-Trump identity, we wanted to talk to Shikha Dalmia about what she thinks is next for the Libertarian Party.
