  • Painful Legacy of MI Boarding Schools

A new report from the U.S. Department of Interior underscores what Native American families have known for decades: The longstanding policy of removing Native children from their homes and sending them to residential boarding schools had devastating and widespread impacts across the country.

That includes here in Michigan, which was home to several Native boarding schools, the last of which didn't close its doors until the 1980s. Today on the pod, what we know about the history and legacy of our state’s Native boarding schools.

  • Fraud Scandal Cuts GOP Field In Half

The Board of State Canvassers met today to determine who would make the primary ballot for governor, and whether several of the candidates should be held off the ballot due to thousands of fraudulent signatures submitted. Ultimately, a Bureau of Elections recommendation to keep four of the 10 candidates off the ballot, stood. A fifth candidate, Michael Brown, had already decided he wanted no part of the scandal and dropped out.

    GUEST:

Guns are now the leading cause of death for American children, but Michigan laws won't budge. Today, we talk with the Michigan State Senator whose district includes Oxford Township, where the mass shooting at Oxford High earlier this school year remains a fresh wound. And we hear from a researcher who narrows in on gun deaths -- and ways to possibly mitigate them -- among Michigan children.

  • MI GOP Turmoil Over Fraudulent Signatures

A political bomb dropped last night in Michigan as the Bureau of Elections recommended half of the Republican candidates for governor not make the primary ballot. That’s because the state agency found tens-of-thousands of fraudulent signatures on five of the 10 candidates’ petitions. And they didn’t have enough valid signatures to make the ballot. The signatures appear to have been fabricated by a small number of people, and not noticed or discarded by the campaigns.

    GUESTS:

Zoe Clark, program director and host of "It's Just Politics", Michigan Radio

Emily Lawler, politics editor, Detroit Free Press

  • Filing Errors Block Primary Candidates

More than a dozen prospective candidates seeking office in Michigan have been kicked out of primary contention because of oversights made in their filings. Mellissa Carone is one of those candidates. You may remember she testified before state House and Senate committees as Rudy Giuliani's so-called “elections expert” in Michigan, and was subsequently lampooned on Saturday Night Live.

Carone was running for state Senate in Macomb County. But her campaign finance issues were not made right, and she signed an affidavit attesting otherwise. Barb Byrum, Ingham County Clerk joined Stateside to explain a bit about how candidates find themselves on the wrong side of ballot contention.
