  • [Audio Quicktakes] 7 Steps To Be A Better Leader - On The Edge Podcast with Nicole Jansen

This week our guest is Transformational Leadership Coach Nicole Jansen. With her company Leaders of Transformation, she helps people do just that, transform in even better leaders and better version fo themselves. This podcast is going to focus on self improvement, leadership strategies, and how one becomes a "coach!" No ‘edgy’ politics this time. However, after listening to today’s episode, you’ll have a good feel for what a top notch coach can do for aspiring leaders.

Are we facing a leadership crisis? It seems that more and more leaders aren’t seeking to lead, they are trying to win. They have their own agenda to further themselves instead of whatever goal they originally set out with. What do you think caused it and what can fix it?

I have the world’s longest patience fuse but when I blow, I don’t handle it very well. How do you not just explode at people you are working with that just aren’t getting it? How do you gracefully get past your breaking point?

What can leaders do to regain trust that they’ve previously lost? In a day and age where leaders try to change the subject and deny the past instead of owning up to their mistake, are we past the point of no return with leaders rebuilding their integrity?

This week our guest is Transformational Leadership Coach Nicole Jansen. With her company Leaders of Transformation, she helps people do just that, transform in even better leaders and better version fo themselves. This podcast is going to focus on self improvement, leadership strategies, and how one becomes a "coach!" No ‘edgy’ politics this time. However, after listening to today’s episode, you’ll have a good feel for what a top notch coach can do for aspiring leaders.

8:00 - How do we get over the failures of our teenage years and our 20’s? Most of us have had some kind of devastating thing happen to us whether it be getting fired, not being able to pay rent or something else. Those experiences shape us when we get older in life, but how can we make those a positive in order to create a better life experience?

18:00 - Are we facing a leadership crisis? It seems that more and more leaders aren’t seeking to lead, they are trying to win. They have their own agenda to further themselves instead of whatever goal they originally set out with. What do you think caused it and what can fix it?

It may surprise you to know that polls are meant to divide us, by the way. You may feel some unity in identifying with the ‘majority’ in the poll, but really, it’s meant to plant the seed of another idea in your head, that maybe you’re wrong, that maybe you don’t agree with your neighbor or community.

31:30 - Our parents grew up in a transformative period and it resulted in many of us perhaps being taken care of a little more than we should have been. Is this creating a scenario where there is no real leadership being taught?

43:25 - Have you ever noticed that ‘new’ ideas on how to better ourselves are just ideas that have been pushed from basically all religious institutes since the beginning of time? Is meditation really that much different than prayer? Why do we think we need to reinvent the wheel all the time?

54:30 - I have the world’s longest patience fuse but when I blow, I don’t handle it very well. How do you not just explode at people you are working with that just aren’t getting it? How do you gracefully get past your breaking point?

1:02:50 - The best thing you can do in a heated argument is to breathe and bring yourself out of the situation. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s about people expressing their opinions. Don’t ruin a friendship or a business relationship over something trivial!

1:14:45 - What can leaders do to regain trust that they’ve previously lost? In a day and age where leaders try to change the subject and deny the past instead of owning up to their mistake, are we past the point of no return with leaders rebuilding their integrity?

  • [Quick Takes] Creating A Team For The Self Employed - On The Edge Podcast with C-Roc

This is an abbreviated version of the full podcast, also available here!

Our guest this week is serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Blooprinted. Blooprinted is all about connecting mentors and mentees to give them a detailed blueprint on how to accomplish any given task.  This is the next evolution of the ‘masterclass’ - with built in accountability and support from the creator.

One of my favorite things about C-Roc is that he’s humble yet eccentric, which is a tough thing to pull off these days, especially in the online world. He explains how he navigates this odd world.

We have critics all around us, our coworkers, friends, and even family are always the biggest ‘what-iffers’ when trying to start a new idea. The truth is, that you are your own biggest critic. Overcoming this step is one of the most important things you’ll do in your life. “All people are unstoppable at living their dreams.”

C-Roc talks about the process of “10xing” your goals. Instead of backing off and compromising like most people do, you should be doubling your goals. Then quadrupling. Then going for the 10x.

What does it take to COMMIT to success over failure?

With so much going on, how do you prioritize what to fully commit to?  18:35 - C-Roc talks about how Blooprinted works, and how it enables creators / architects to create their business while benefiting from a community of other creators to help and support them along the way.

C-Roc has a different concept of team. What does that mean to him? What should a team be instead of our current concepts? Here’s a hint, it’s not a competition. We should be working together to achieve success for everyone.

What is next after Blooprinted? Serial Entrepreneurs always have a next plan, and a plan after that. What’s yours?

  • What's Going On In Afghanistan? [Audio Quicktakes] - On The Edge Podcast

This is an abbreviated version of the full discussion, also available here! It's a good one!

On this Episode we bring you a special roundtable discussion about the war & withdrawal in Afghanistan. Pulling from a diverse group of military members, we cover a lot on this episode. Our in-studio guest is Robbie Hugland, who served with the Air Force as an Electronic Warfare Operator in Afghanistan. This is his second appearance on our Podcast, so if you haven’t listened to the first one, check it out!

Sean joins us via Zoom, and served with the Army as a Human Resources Officer in-Country in Afghanistan. He talked to tons of soldiers coming in and out of Afghanistan & was privy to high level operational conversations at the Officer level.

Nathan also joins us via Zoom. He is a Marine and served as part of an Infantry Scout Squad that was on the front line for two separate Afghan deployments.

We get a diverse range of opinions on everything from Afghan mission creep, did we miss an opportunity to taking out Osama Bin Laden earlier, our military rules of engagement, life at a forward operating base (FOB), the life of the FOBBIT, and how our withdrawal could have been handled.

We also discuss whether or not we should have left a long term stabilizing force in Afghanistan for the next 100 years?

22:28 - How did you feel about going into Afghanistan after the attacks of 9/11?

32:16 - Should we leave Afghanistan and say ‘it is what it is’ -OR- should we leave a stabilizing force in the country?

37:45 - (Robbie) Why were we even there in the first place? What’s the value of an airfield that we control in Afghanistan? What is Mission Creep? Would it surprise you to learn that we could have been out of Afghanistan WAY sooner than you could have ever imagined? Did Bush (W) & Dick Cheney MISS their opportunity to kill or capture Osama Bin Laden earlier?

52:40 - (Nathan) What’s your opinion on leaving or staying? Nathan shares that one of his primary missions was to convince farmers not to grow poppies, so we can control the drug money being funneled to the Taliban. The main objective of being there was to control drugs for quite a long time. Poppy seeds, opium, and agriculture of illegal drugs accounts for MOST of Afghanistans GDP.

1:10:55 - Not all military people think alike. There are a lot of misconceptions out there that, once you become a soldier, whether it be the Army, Marines, Air Force, or Navy, you become one of the same. We’re here to tell you that’s not true, and we have some excellent examples. Soldiers & Veterans do NOT have a monolithic or standard opinion on politics.

1:19:28 - We gave the Taliban a TON of equipment. What do you think they are going to do with it? Are we in store for another 9/11? Did we make a massive mistake? Will the Taliban and Al Queda being fighting us with our own weapons in some future war?

2:00:00 - If you’re skipping through for the current events question, this is the part you want to watch. Did Biden mess up the withdrawal? Could we have done it better? If you were helping advise or manage, what do you think should have happened or could have happened? Should we have just stayed?

  • The Afghanistan Mess, "Chestfeeding," & Free College From Coronavirus - Scott's Thoughts

Time for another round of Scott’s Thoughts! I have thoughts about the Afghanistan situation, but we’ll save that for the final topic.

1:24 - Starting off, Fox News reports that the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine has released a statement changing common known terminology to more gender-inclusive words. Think ‘chest feeding’ instead of ‘breastfeeding.’ Now, as we dive into it we learn that as usual, Fox News is going overboard with their reporting (the Academy was simply stating that they have new gender-inclusive terminology that CAN be used in the correct situation). That being said, the fact that this is even news really makes me weary of where our money toward medicine is going. Is this really where our dollars need to be spent? Did you even know the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine existed?

14:29 - THE HBCU’s (Historically Black College) of the nation are erasing student debt. While it IS important to help the minorities of the nation, I find it a tough pill to swallow that ANY college debt is being ‘forgiven’ or erased. It’s even tougher when the decision on who receives these benefits is based on ANYTHING other than the education they received or their contributions to society. No matter who you are, if you are given free money, you’re gonna take it.

Taking it a step further, where is the money coming from? Wait for it…….the Cares Act! The act that is supposed to help us with Coronavirus relief! This is not for hospitals, or science, or businesses that lost money, but for student debt. This is why so many people had problems with the rushed relief bills, there was SO MUCH MORE SPENDING that had nothing to do with the Coronavirus hidden in it! So much has nothing to do with Covid-19!

26:24 - A ton of people have been asking for my opinion on the Afghanistan situation, and it was really hard to sum up in a Facebook post so I wanted that to be the focal point of this podcast. I was in the Army before the war began, and therefore I have a bunch of friends who have first hand experience dealing with the situation.

34:31 - Let’s start by checking out Biden’s interview with ABC News specifically about the withdrawal, and my thoughts on that. I will say that it’s super frustrating but you’ll need to watch to hear my thoughts.

46:25 - We play one more clip from Podcaster Megyn Kelly and I share my thoughts on this as well.

  • On The Edge Podcast with Shaahin Cheyene [QuickTakes]

Our guest this week is Shaahin Cheyene, who has a fascinating story starting with the beginnings of raves in the 90’s, and progressing to an Amazon Master today.

Our Story starts in the 90’s at raves waaaay in the beginning. Shaahin, at the time friends with Pasquale Rotella of EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) set out to try to figure out how to make actual money in the rave scene. The people were certainly there, but where was the money? It didn’t take long to figure out that it was drugs. The drug dealers went home with all the cash.

Knowing selling illegal drugs is not a solid long term future, he came up with an alternative to the MDMA and Ecstacy that was being sold at the parties. This was a completely legal, herbal alternative to the drug and It. Took. Off.

Selling the supplement in drug stores, adult stores, new-age stores, bookstores, and other small businesses. He got the attention of Larry Flynt, The President, the DEA, the FDA, and everybody else desperate to either work with him or stop him. Links to his appearance on Montel Williams below. We go over the process in detail.

We talk about the struggles of being an entrepreneur in the United States as the child of immigrant parents. Once they found a bit of success, they even bought a home that had professional squatters living in the backyard. Learn how they grew from this and proved that kindness is always the best answer.

Most believe that the path to entrepreneurship is coming up with a product to sell, but this isn’t entirely true. The real answer is finding an answer to distribution. If you don’t have a distribution plan, you have no way to get your product to the people, and therefore you don’t have anything to sell. Shaahin’s current income is based exactly on this concept, and we go over the basics. How did Amazon become as big as they did? Bezos may or may not have learned a thing or two from Walmart…maybe…

Selling on Amazon is easier than you think. As Shaahin says, ‘the riches are in the niches’ and he goes over what that actually means and how you can cash out on that industry that’s wide open for the taking.

We go over some recommended reading and advice for being better at starting and continuing your business. In Shaahin’s book Billions, his forward was written by Chris Voss, which should say something immediately about the people he knows.

Learn about the art of accepting things for their imperfections. Shaahin goes over an experience he had in Japan that left him feeling empty, and what he learned about it after asking others about his experience.

What is it like earning your first million dollars? What did you expect to happen? A lot of it comes down to following your gut.

  • Cuomo in Trouble, Johansson vs Disney, and Rapinoe Talking Too Much - On The Edge Podcast

We’re back with more current events coverage, there’s just SO MUCH going on!

We start with a follow-up report on the Scarlett Johansson and Disney+ story and dig a little deeper into their contract and WHY Johansson is upset with them. In short, many star actors depend on box-office bonuses to cover their salary while accepting a lower up-front fee. With Disney releasing movies at the same time on Disney+, this really affects the Actor’s bottom line. Is this fair? Is it time to stop catering to people afraid to go to the theater? Is there a better solution?

We move into Megan Rapinoe story that’s caught the nations attention, which has really just turned into a huge political mess. Is it making our country look bad or is it really just a non-issue? To me, this is one of those ‘you both can be right’ situations where I just don’t think you need to be taking sides. IN FACT, I think the Right is elevating her platform and visibility. I don’t particularly like her politics, but I like seeing America win at the Olympics. Honestly, we should really be talking about Tamyra Mensah-Stock and her amazing, patriotic, and passionate speech.

Finally, and you knew I would go there, we talk about the New York AG Investigation on Governor Cuomo and the allegations of sexual harassment. Although at some point he was to be given an Emmy for his daily Coronavirus updates, he has taken several missteps over the years, in my opinion. As of now, he’s refusing to step down even though there is allegedly 75,000 pieces of evidence. I appreciate his right to keep his position before he is actually convicted, but it brings up the fact that there is a double-standard for politicians. Does he deserve to fall to the ‘Me Too’ movement without conviction?

I guess the moral of the whole podcast is that ‘Two things can be true at the same time.’
