Apologies for not getting an episode out over the last couple of weeks. Gav + I both had trouble with the Internet on another episode that we ultimately decided to scrap for now, (we will redo it later—promise. It’s a good one!!), then food poisoning literally kicked my ass for a few days. Am back up and running now though!

We’ve got a shorter episode on Nusantara, Indonesia’s slated future capital being cut out of the jungles of East Kalimantan Province on Borneo as we speak. The country has big plans for the future, and if you are at all interested in future sustainability and the future of Southeast Asia and development, don’t give this a miss.

Also, in the past week, there has been a tremendous flood in northern Nigeria that’s displaced nearly 2 million people…but the news media just wants to you know that a few animals have gotten loose. Shame on them for not doing their jobs!

We also jump into terrorism in the region, including one of the biggest power players in West Africa, Boko Haram. (this is the same group that kidnapped a whole school of girls in 2014).

First and foremost: Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and everywhere else that had to deal with Typhoon Yagi. We wish you the fast and fullest recovery possible.

We are taking another look into what is happening with the Alice Guo case in the Philippines.

If you haven’t heard; the former mayor of the city of Banban, in the northern Philippines was summoned to appear before the Philippine Senate to answer questions about her legal status in the country, and her business. Seeing no good outcome, she flew the coop, bribed customs officers to leave, and did a whistle stop tour of Southeast Asia. The Indonesian police arrested her outside of Jakarta and had her extradited back to Manila, where she has been charged with money laundering (and potentially more nefarious crimes to boot).

Alice is now back in Manila’s hands, and is starting to talk…and what she will tell will no doubt add a whole ‘nother layer of madness to this tale.

Hey all! We just finished recording Episode 6 of On the Fringe. On this episode, we dive more into how and why the Horn of Africa region (Ethiopia, Somalia, Egypt) is such a mess, but was still somewhat predictable—and what might happen if the entire bottom falls out of the basket…which is looking ever more likely.

I was just listening to the episode and realized that I made a BIG boo-boo and said that Somalia would attack Ethiopia in the event of a war from its airports—they can’t— because they don’t have a functional Air Force. But Egypt likely would use them if the three get into a fight!

Regardless of where you are in the world, East Africa WILL impact you. Wanna know how? Give us a few minutes of your time and we’ll explain everything.

Hey all, we ‘planned’ to do a 40 minutes over Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa this week. Once we were about 3 minutes in, we just dove into it and started burrowing. And, we didn’t even take more than a bite outta this massive plate of spaghetti.

Gav takes you through what is going on in the entire region: politics, social structure, history, while I touch on the countries’ economies, terrorism, and why this region (and Ethiopia in particular) NEEDS to be brought more into the spotlight TODAY.

Putin visited Mongolia this week—this is BIG news for three of reasons:

* He’s still running around and making deals, despite having an ICC (International Criminal Court) arrest warrant out for him.

* He flipped the bird (again, unsurprisingly) to the Europeans…OR (on the flip side), did the Europeans set themselves up to be the butt of their own joke?

* Mongolia may be moving back into Russia’s orbit, at least economically.
