In our tenth episode we discuss the 1989 live action film, “Honey I Shrunk the Kids.” It had been awhile since we had seen this film, and we Loved it! The props and use of animatronics were amazing. Joel remembers watching this film in Spanish and had some confusion with the translation of a specific word. We discuss the issues with movie adaptations from our favorite books. We also researched a little background on the title and learned it won an award for worst movie title for one specific reason. Listen and find out why!

In our ninth episode we discuss the 1967 Jungle Book, but also add a bonus part in which we discuss the 1994 live action version. Joel owned the 1994 version and was more familiar with that one, but Avery had never seen it so it was fun to watch both and compare and contrast. We definitely like one more than the other. It turns out there are many more versions of this story and that the origins date back to the 19th century!

In our eighth episode we discuss the 1977 Rescuers, which is the first out of two in which the second did not get released until 13 years later. We had some technical difficulties for this episode, but we clear it up and hopefully it still is interesting. Joel has fond memories of this film and feels very strongly about his favorite character. After watching the film, Avery clears up a scene that had confused Joel his entire life. Joel also gets to prove Avery wrong, which he loves, about what accent Miss Bianca had the whole time. Also, big time dirty Disney secret in this one!

In our seventh episode we jump forward to 1989 with another Princess tale, but maybe not as classic as the original fairy tales. The Little Mermaid has a similar plot as those films, but her struggle is not being human, which is a unique predicament. Both Joel and Avery love the music of this film and were quite familiar with the songs. Joel shares the origins of the story and once again, it is much darker than the Disney version. We both struggle with the idea of two people falling in love without ever speaking to each other and we discuss the complications and plot holes of this story.

For our sixth episode we went way back to 1959 with a classic Princess tale. This was Avery’s favorite princess when she was very little, but neither of us could remember much about the story-line. After watching it again, we realized we didn’t remember because there wasn’t much of a story-line and had little to no character development. With that said, we poke at all the plot holes and ask all the questions we wish this movie had answered. Hopefully you can empathize with our concerns.

For our fifth episode, we both fell in love again with the Hunchback of Notre Dame. One of the most beautifully animated films yet, this 1996 Disney movie really portrayed some troubling topics and themes. We discuss at length the evil that Frollo represents and how controversial he is as a man of God. Joel shares the original story and how sad it truly is. We both genuinely loved everything about this movie and were reminded of how good it is.

For our fourth episode we decided to choose a movie that is a bit obscure. From 1985, The Black Cauldron is one of the darkest Disney movies out there. Joel had not seen this film, so we have him guess the plot simply by looking at the movie poster. We both had little memories of this film, but definitely a lot of opinions after watching it!

For our third episode Joel couldn’t wait any longer and went straight to his favorite Disney film of all time. Released the year Avery was born, 1992, Aladdin is a classic for a reason. Joel has little to no objections to this film, however, Avery does bring up some controversial subjects and lines. Joel even mentions a line so controversial in a song that it had to be changed. This one also has a dirty disney secret…

For our second episode we chose a movie that is waaaay older than it seems. Released in 1953 this movie definitely has scenes that are outdated and controversial. We discuss the issues we have, but also appreciate the time period this film was made. Joel shares the origins of the story and Avery asks, “Does it pass the Bechdel test?”

For our first episode we chose a movie not everyone might have seen. This 1971 film was a fun look back into our memories as neither of us remembered much of it. We talk about how the animated underwater scenes made us feel as kids and what it was like to watch it again. We laugh at the invisible army and discuss how political this movie actually was for the times. Definitely a great movie to get us in the nostalgic mood!
