This Easter we are taking a quick pause for a miniseries focusing on the saving work of Christ with special guest Dr. Neil C. Stewart. Over the next two episodes, we will look at Christ's life and sacrifice, resurrection and ascension.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15 that these things are "of first importance," that our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and yet rose to life! The Bible overflows with teachings and warnings about the power of the tongue--a gentle tongue is a tree of life (Proverbs 15:4), but it is also a powerful and destructive weapon, causing irreparable damage upon oneself and others (James 3:5-12), and must be guarded and its words curated with the utmost care (Psalm 141:3, Proverbs 13:3). Thus, we have decided to take two episodes on Sins of the Tongue--and today, we are wrapping up this two-part topic with Lying and Cursing.

Lying can be a complex topic, not merely the misuse of data but of truth, and truth makes up not just our lives but our identities as Christians (John 14:6, 17:17)--and God calls us to speak the truth to our neighbors in unity and fellowship (Ephesians 20:16). On that note, he also calls only to use words that "are good for building up" (Ephesians 4:29) and are "gracious, seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:6), and not to listen to the whispers of our hearts: for our hearts will always want us to do what serves us or satisfies us best, by lying to get out of trouble or by cursing to gratify an impulsive emotion, because our hearts are fallen and broken instruments (Matthew 15:18-20, Jeremiah 17:9). Only through the Holy Spirit can we learn to use our tongues not for our own selfish desires, but to "give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29).

So join us in this episode to deconstruct the struggles of the tongue and how to combat them in our daily lives.

As we continue through our list of sins, we decided to group some into categories--therefore, we will spend the next two episodes covering Sins of the Tongue, with today's half-hour focusing in on Grumbling, Complaining, and Gossip.

As the people of God, we have always struggled with a lack of faith in our savior, discontent in his ways, and preference for their own designs over his. This is the classic "Israelite Attitude"... grumbling and complaining at the present struggles, "murmur[ing] in their tents" (Psalm 106:25), gossiping about others without regard to their status as children of God... and we are called against that behavior, to instead be "blameless and innocent," that we may "shine as lights in the world" in the midst of "a crooked and twisted generation" (Philippians 2:14-16).

So join us today in the study of these foolish attitudes and how we can learn to turn away from the foolishness of darkened hearts (Romans 1:21) and to grow into trust of God's providence alone.

Obedience is, and has always been, a polarizing subject in the human experience. From governing authorities to parents, from bosses to traffic laws, rulers and their rules are everywhere--and everyone struggles with the temptation to rebel against that which stands over them, enticed by their own desire (James 1:14) instead of ready towards obedience.

But Jesus tells us in the Gospel of John that, if we love him, we are to "keep his commandments" (14:15), for the one who "hears and does not do them" is like that man who built his house on sinking sand, and when the waters rose and broke against it, "the ruin of that house was great" (Luke 6:46-49).

But what do we do when we come up against this struggle to submit to our Lord? And do these teachings still apply to our governing authorities? Join us today in our study on how to recognize and treat disobedience in oneself and others, and how the gospel breaks through our hearts of stone and calls us to submission and a life surrounded by the joy of serving Christ Jesus our Lord.

Welcome to One Another, a podcast that seeks to apply biblical principles to our moment-by-moment lives. Hosted by Rev. Josh Squires and Josh Fleming, with special guest Marie Louise Bowers, we will dive into the "Top 10 Sins" that both men and women struggle with in our daily walk with the Lord.

The Book of James commands us in our own Christian life to be "doers of the word" (1:22)--but Laziness is a sin that creeps under the door and eats away at not only our productivity but our spiritual lives, as God's workmanship authored that we would be created for good works (Ephesians 2:10), by which we would show the authenticity of our faith (James 1:22). But idleness is the bane of this spiritual posture--just as "the sluggard says 'there is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!'" (Proverbs 22:13), so our laziness tempts us with no creative end to the excuses it conjures, each less logical yet more alluring than the last.

So join us this week as we dissect this disease of ease, looking to how it rationalizes and reasons with the unguarded mind and how we can shake off this sin which clings so closely to our comfort, instead running "with endurance the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1).
