  • Episode #25 – Jason Donev & University Education

Jason Donev is tenured at the University of Calgary, and has received awards for teaching and outreach. Dr. Donev teaches nuclear power, electricity, and thermodynamics, the senior project class for energy and a course that introduces issues related to energy to a non-technical audience, affectionately called ‘energy for everyone.’ Dr. Donev regularly talks with advocates and interested parties all over the political spectrum about various energy issues, especially – but not limited to – nuclear power and climate change. Energyeducation.ca is a major project of Dr. Donev’s, and he hopes to continually improve and adapt the site.

Check out his website called Energy Education at: https://energyeducation.ca/encyclopedia/Main_Page

It is one of the best resources that I know of for becoming well versed in various energy sources.

In the show we discuss his 5 part video series about nuclear power in pop culture and media:

  • Episode #24 – Anna Cheniuntai & 3D Printing Structures

Anna is the CEO and founder of the company Apis Cor which is developing autonomous construction 3D printing robots.

Apis Cor is a construction industry disrupter providing innovative 3D printing robotics technology to build housing faster and cheaper. Apis Cor is headquartered in Boston, MA as a resident of the Autodesk Technology Center.

Apis Cor’s unique 3D printer — which size is less than an SUV car – construct the desired shape of a building with concrete-like material (Ink). The 3D printer has a precise mechanism for feeding the Ink layer by layer, directly forming a building at the construction site without extra assembly, thus minimizing labor hours and reducing errors in the construction process. Apis Cor machines feature proprietary technology offering compact dimensions, mobility, unique design, and easily scalable operations. The 3D printer can be easily brought to a site and moved around, so it is possible to build houses of any sizes.

Since 2016, Apis Cor demonstrated workability of their technology through multiple prototypes and research projects:• In collaboration with Dubai Municipality they 3D printed the world’s biggest building recognizes as such by Guinness record.• Placed first in most levels of “3D Printed Habitat Challenge” organized by NASA, 2019

  • Episode #23 – Caroline Cochran, Jacob DeWitte, and Oklo

Today on the show I have the two founders of Oklo, Caroline Cochran and Jacob DeWitte, who are designing clean energy plants using advanced fission.

Caroline has experience ranging from engineering to entrepreneurship, research, economics, policy, sales and marketing. She has specifically worked on technologies including solar vehicles, advanced fission, and oil and natural gas. She has worked with think tanks, engineering standards societies, intellectual property, government agencies, defense (in the pentagon and with military contractors), and marketing. She did here mechanical engineering degree at the University of Oklahoma and then continued on to MIT and did her Masters in Nuclear Engineering where she did 3 years of research on air ingress in HTGRs.

Jacob went to the University of Florida and did Nuclear Engineering and then went on to MIT to do his PhD in nuclear engineering. For most of his life he has worked in energy generation and distribution. He has experience in nuclear reactor design and analysis of sodium fast reactors, molten salt reactors, and next generation PWRs; and fuel cycle analysis on the front end, and closing the back end. He completed his PhD at MIT in nuclear engineering where he developed tools to analyze adoption scenarios of high performance light water reactor fuels as part of long term capital asset management planning for nuclear power plants.

  • Episode #22 – Klasey Jones & Music

Klasey Jones is from London, UK and is an incredibly talented musician. He has been creating music for several years and you may have heard his music in some of the Storror parkour videos or in other videos with companies such as Canon. His music is hard to fit into one genre, but when you listen to it I promise you it will be the theme music you will want playing if you were to get in a rocket and fly to Mars.

Klasey and I dive into a myriad of different topics, such as how music has supported people during COVID-19, advice to young people getting into the music industry, how the music industry supports reducing the effects of climate change, and many others.

  • Episode #21 – Tim Burke & Solar Power

Tim Burke is one of the leading experts in Canada when it comes to Solar Power technology and projects. He graduated from Queen’s University with a BASc in Mining Engineering, but then quickly transitioned his career into the solar industry where he has been for the majority of his career and made a huge impact. He has worked at some incredible places such as Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Evergreen Power Ltd., Solar Flow, and now is currently at GP Joule Canada Corp as their Senior Director of Engineering and Project Management. He wanted to make it clear that he does not speak on behalf of GP Joule Canada Corp., but rather is expressing his own ideas and opinions.

It seems that the discussion of solar power is continuing to grow more and more. With the energy equation becoming so complicated many people have been asking, “where does solar power fit?” Does solar power have a place at all? Is it better to have solar power on your house or in a central location producing hundreds of megawatts? Is the life cycle of solar power detrimental to the environment? Doesn’t solar power take up large amounts of land? Tim Burke and I dive into all of these questions and more, so listen in and leave your comments about what you think of our conversation.

  • Episode #17 – Sean Wagner and Alberta Nuclear

Sean Wagner is the Lead Writer and Editor for Alberta Nuclear Nucleus. Him and his team are working to promote and advocate for nuclear power to be incorporated into Alberta’s energy plan. They describe that one of their mandate’s is to “provide easy to grasp education about the details of nuclear power and work to dispel the myths and misunderstandings surrounding this foundational tool.” Sean has a BSc and MSc in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta and has dedicated his life to making nuclear power a reality in Alberta and throughout Canada.

I had a blast talking with Sean and discussing what it will take to bring nuclear power into Alberta as well as what the opportunities and challenges will be throughout the process. One of my favorite lines that Sean brought up during our discussion is that the “future of energy is NOT a zero-sum game.” We all need to work together to make the energy we use cleaner and greener.

He has traveled all over the world and is one of the smartest guys I know. With all of the complex issues that are facing our world today, it was incredibly refreshing to have a conversation with John and try our best to maneuver through today’s issues and make sense of them all.

We try and wrestle with issues like COVID-19, BLM, climate, and big media. John also expounds on how Stoicism may be a huge key to solving a lot of these problems. Listen in and please reach out and let me know what you think of our conversation.

The issues we are trying to address are incredibly complex and after going back and listening to our conversation we definitely missed things. I would love to get your feedback and insight as to how we can solve some of the issues we are dealing with in the podcast as well as things we may have missed or got wrong!
