SERMON NOTES

[L]ove comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 NIV

THE EFFECT OF INTIMACY

If you want to grow in love, get closer to its source.

KNOW (ginṓskō): to know, especially through personal experience or first-hand acquaintance; to experientially know.

1. Speak and Listen

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27 NIV

[W]hen he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. John 16:13-14 NIV

2. Read and Reflect

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 NIV

Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 NIV

3. Do and Don’t

Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. John 14:23-24 NIV

4. Gather and Grow

[L]et us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV

5. Serve and Sacrifice (time-talent-treasure)

[W]here your treasure is, there your heart will be also. . . . No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:21; 24 NIV

6. Rest and Repeat

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 KJV

When faced with a list of duties, obligations, and responsibilities, the first thing you should ask is, “what’s most important?” If you know what’s most important, you’ll know where to focus your time and energy. One day, Jesus was asked by a religious leader, “What’s the most important commandment in the entire Bible?” Jesus famously answered that the most important commandment is to “love.” He said we are to love God, love ourselves, and love our neighbors. That’s the most important thing we can do! So for the next few weeks, we will explore what it means to love God fully, love ourselves completely, and love others unconditionally. Our hearts are inclined toward lust, greed, deceit, laziness, judgmentalism, racism, bitterness, the list goes on. But Jesus teaches us a way out. He teaches us that whether we give into temptation is a matter of choosing who we follow. Do we follow our feelings, our desires, our friends, our culture, or do we follow Jesus. Because when we follow Jesus, he will lead us not into temptation, but will deliver us from evil. Join us today for a special message titled: Lead me not into temptation -- I can find it by myself.

If you’ve ever been in debt, you know how crushing it can be. Most of us deal with debt in one of two ways. We either try to pay it off or we try to play it off. In other words, we either ignore it and hope it goes away (which it never does), or we work feverishly to settle our debts. Jesus teaches us that sin is like a debt that we cannot pay off. The longer we ignore it, the bigger it becomes. The more we try to work off our sin, the more exhausted we become. Either way, it’s impossible for us to get out from under the crushing debt of sin on our own. Join us today as we learn Jesus’ method for getting out of debt!

HOW TO GET OUT OF DEBT

During the pandemic, we experienced an unanticipated disruption to the global supply chain. It became difficult to get basic items like clothes, electronics, construction materials, and medical supplies. One of the major problems was that suppliers simply were not able to keep up with demand. Some of us are experiencing a spiritual supply chain crisis. We long for healthy relationships, meaningful work, positive mental health, and financial stability, but there’s a problem. We’re looking to get love, purpose, peace, and prosperity from sources that simply cannot supply these things. Join us this Sunday for Part 3 of Teach Us to Pray, as we explore the question, “who’s your supplier?”

SUPPER

Nearly everyone recognizes and acknowledges the importance and the value of prayer. Nearly everyone longs for a deeper, more personal connection with God. And yet, prayer somehow remains difficult and elusive for most of us. We don’t know how to pray effectively, so we either give up completely, or we resort to vain repetition of memorized recitals. But what if God wants us to be in real true dialogue with him? What if he wants you to be intimately connected with him?
