But there are really only two forces powerful enough to inspire creation, effect restoration and produce transformation in our lives: the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Both were present at the Creation. But were present at the Incarnation. Both were present at our Regeneration. Both are with us now … and that means the possibilities are endless.

He is with you. He is in you. And if you’ll lean into Him when you are at your weakest, He will give you a strength and power fictional superheroes only dream of.

Many times, we find ourselves looking for God in difficult situations, only later to discover that He was there all the time. As we explore the life of Bathsheba, we find her in some of the most heartbreaking and difficult circumstances imaginable. But when we look closer, we discover that God was there all the time.

In our “picture-perfect” Christmas, we imagine being surrounded by our closest friends and family members. We imagine relational harmony. We imagine intimate family dinners where everyone gets along and no one causes drama! But God’s perfect picture of Christmas calls us to something even bigger and more beautiful. In God’s perfect picture of Christmas, outsiders become insiders. Strangers become family. Enemies become friends. And even those on the fringe of society become intimately connected to God’s ultimate divine purpose of redeeming and restoring the world to Him! In God’s perfect picture of Christmas, those who are far off draw close to the love of God in Christ!

We all have a picture in our minds of what we want Christmas to look like. We all have our “Picture Perfect Christmas.” It probably includes friends, family, good food, gifts, laughter, joy and togetherness. However, we also know that the “Picture Perfect Christmas” in our mind rarely matches the reality of our lives. While Christmas is certainly a time of joy and laughter, it’s also a time of financial strain, relationship stress, loneliness, fatigue and pressure. So for the next few weeks, we’re going to let go of the “Picture Perfect Christmas” of our imagination, and take a good long look at the real picture of Christmas in the scriptures. Sometimes we experience self-righteousness. Other times we experience shame. And we know that both of these attitudes are destructive to our relationships with God and others. The Good News is that both are possible through Jesus. It’s really not about me. It’s all about Him.
