After approximately 7 months on the road travelling around Australia with my husband and cat in a van we are giving our final update of the trip and our thoughts. My husband is my guest this week where we discuss how we have found van life, our favourite moments, tips for those starting out and if we would do this adventure again.
Cameron Hardiman joined the Victoria Police at age eighteen and served over 34 years in policing. Most of his time with Victoria Police was as an air observer with the Police Air Wing. He saw his fair share of trauma and dealt with it like most coppers would: he quickly put each dangerous job out of his mind as soon as it was over. But one particular rescue in Bass Strait brought about a reckoning - and Cameron was never the same again. He eventually joined the Australian Federal Police and served on overseas missions that included the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. He then transferred into an investigations role, focusing first on general crime, then people smuggling operations and counter terr***sm. Cameron has authored “ten feet tall and not quite bull**proof” about his story.

Currently traversing the great Australian landscape in a van with our cat, todays podcast departs from our normal type of guest and episode to provide an update on our van life adventure. I managed to convince my husband to come back on the podcast to discuss the incredible animals we have encountered, beautiful beaches visited, scenery viewed and people meet throughout Queensland as well as his increasing, all be it slowly, coffee knowledge!

Shaun O’Gorman is a Human Behaviour, High Performance and Resilience consultant, keynote speaker, and author. After joining the Queensland Police Service in 1989, Shaun worked in the Police Dog Squad for many years as well as the Covert and Surveillance unit working on Major and Organised Crime. While in the K9 unit Shaun was involved in daily high-risk critical incidents ranging from violent street brawls, high-speed pursuits, barricaded suspects, domestics, and other serious shootings. The majority of these placed him at high risk of serious injury or worse. He also performed duties with the Special Emergency Response Team (SWAT) as a tactical K9 handler.
Shaun left the QPS and was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The years of exposure to serious police call outs, resulted in clinical depression. To overcome his mental health injuries, Shaun spent the next 17 years immersed in the study of personal development, human behaviour and high performance with a goal of healing himself and living a happy life. He now devotes his life to helping others using the knowledge and education that helped him help himself.
While forging his successful corporate executive career Shaun developed an interest in mentoring and coaching others and now continues to follow his passion for helping others to create high performing lives for themselves. He established “The Strong Life Project” to deliver High-Performance Mentoring, Workshops, Keynote Speeches, daily podcasts, and articles focused on providing tools and strategies to empower people to conquer challenges, manage stress, and create happy and fulfilled lives.
As an accomplished author, Shaun’s most recent book, “My Dark Companion”, chronicles his own highly personal fight with PTSD, depression and how he has come out the other side as a role model for people of all walks of life on how to create a life that you love.

Troy Knight was member of the Royal Australian Airforce and was one of the first Airmen to pass 2nd Commando Regiment selection and to serve with what was at the time a new Special Forces unit, the elite 4 Squadron Combat Controllers
Troy Knight’s mates know him as ‘Norm’ or ‘TK’. Born in 1977 to a single mother, Troy grew up as what he describes as a ‘typical Queensland boy’ enjoying surfing, playing rugby league and generally looking for mischief. It was Troy’s boundary pushing and risk taking that fuelled his thirst for adventure and made him walk into the Townsville Defence Force Recruiting office in 1999, just after the East Timor crisis had kicked off. Deflated at being told that Army Recruit training was bottlenecked for eight months, Troy was stopped by an Air Force Sergeant who asked if he knew about the RAAF Airfield Defence Guards. It was this sliding door moment, that would see Troy subsequently travel to Afghanistan, Iraq and beyond and become one of Australia’s first Combat Controllers in the Australian Special Forces.

Esmat was born and lived all of his life in war torn Kabul, Afghanistan. As a child his memories are of shelling during the Mujahideen war and later of cruel public demonstrations of the Taliban rule. As a 7 year old he found work in a smelting factory and later as a bar manager in the UK embassy. Defying local laws to handle and serve alcohol to the western staff. It was this job which resulted in him fleeing for his life to neighbouring borders and entrusting international people smugglers to get him to Australia. A four year journey.
