This episode looks at Luke 1:80, “And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.” John grows up with a single-minded focus: serving as the prophet of Yahweh. May we also, by the strengthening power of the Holy Spirit, pursue growth in the service of God.

This episode looks at Luke 1:79, “to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” The rising of the sun is fulfilled in light being given to those in darkness so that their feet may walk in the path of peace. Jesus is that light. May he guide us in our ways, and may we be lights to others so that they might see him.

This episode looks at Luke 1:78, “because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high.” God visits his people with tender mercy with a light in dark places. May this be a comfort and joy to us.

This episode looks at Luke 1:77, “to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins.” John proclaimed the gospel as he called people to repentance and to faith in the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. May we imitate him in doing the same.

This episode looks at Luke 1:76, “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways.” We praise God for John’s preparation for Christ, and we ask that God would do that work in our hearts and the hearts of those around us today.

This episode looks at Luke 1:75, “in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.” We must walk in purity and holiness and imitate God by giving to others what is their due. May we have the wisdom of how to walk in holiness, righteousness, and grace for all of our days.

This episode looks at Luke 1:74, “that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear.” We find freedom when we are liberated from lesser authorities and enter into the service of the greatest and most benevolent authority—namely, God alone.

This episode looks at Luke 1:73, “the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us.” The holy covenant is the one he made with Abraham as he swore by himself. God is trustworthy and always keeps his promises because he cannot lie. This gives us great reason to hope even when our situations looks dire.

This episode looks at Luke 1:72, “to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant.” God raised up a horn of salvation to highlight his compassionate mercy. He is the loyal one who remembers his covenant and acts upon it despite our sinfulness. Praise God and may we trust him more and more in light of this truth.

This episode looks at Luke 1:71, “that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.” Zechariah expected political deliverance with religious implications. Jesus brings religious freedom with political implications. May we first and foremost praise Christ for his redemptive work on the cross.
