For this week we have 2 films! One released in 2002 and the remake in 2006 directed by Martin Scorsese fresh off the back off his 2004 hit performance in Dreamwork’s Shark Tale. The original film had a budget of 6.4 million USD and brought in a modest 8.7 million with an opening weekend of only 25k across 5 theatres! The latter was made on 90mil and brought in a much healthier 292 million which cemented the fact that Americans can take anything from foreigners and make it bigger and longer and their people will eat it up without any questions. Starring Tony Leung, and Andy Lau the original film was directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak and was a darling at the small time awards being nomintated for 26 separate awards and won 24! It has an IMDB rating of 8/10 from 128k reviews with a letterboxd score of 3.9. the remake which came out only 4 years later has an 8.5/10 on IMDb with only slightly more reviews at a modest 1.4 million and stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson and won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Editing and also was a nomination for everyone’s favourite Transformers Dad Mark Wahlberg.
