For this week we have 2 films! One released in 2002 and the remake in 2006 directed by Martin Scorsese fresh off the back off his 2004 hit performance in Dreamwork’s Shark Tale. The original film had a budget of 6.4 million USD and brought in a modest 8.7 million with an opening weekend of only 25k across 5 theatres! The latter was made on 90mil and brought in a much healthier 292 million which cemented the fact that Americans can take anything from foreigners and make it bigger and longer and their people will eat it up without any questions. Starring Tony Leung, and Andy Lau the original film was directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak and was a darling at the small time awards being nomintated for 26 separate awards and won 24! It has an IMDB rating of 8/10 from 128k reviews with a letterboxd score of 3.9. the remake which came out only 4 years later has an 8.5/10 on IMDb with only slightly more reviews at a modest 1.4 million and stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson and won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Editing and also was a nomination for everyone’s favourite Transformers Dad Mark Wahlberg.

Directed by and starring Stephen Chow and released in 2001, iIt grossed 60.7m HKY making it the highest grossing film in the regions history at the time! It held that record until 2004 when it was uncrowned by Stephen Chow’s next film… Kung Fu Hustle! It grossed a total of 42.7m USD World Wide which was just over 4x its budget of 10m USD. It has a rating of 7.3/10 off 84k reviews and a 3.6/5 on letterboxd and has a huge cult following just like all of Stephen chows other work… which fun fact, Keegan has yet to see!

This one is the story of A Shaolin master who assembles his five childhood friends so that they can use their martial arts skills to play football and thereby popularize Shaolin kung fu. It was sold as an action comedy but it dips its toes into so many damn genres its hard to come out the other side without a headache and a six pack from laughing so hard

Released in 2002, It has a runtime of 1h42m and was made on a budget of US$60m and had minor success making back its budget at US$82m US. It Stars Christian Bale, and Matthew McConaughey and was directed by Rob Bowman who went on to direct the critical and commercial success that was 2005’s Elektra as well as working through his Nathan Fillion Man Crush by Producing Castle and The Rookie. The film is… unique to say the least! It is based during a post apocalyptic 2020 where the world has been taken over by dragons! On IMDb it has a rating of 6.2/10 from over 140k reviews but a 2.9/5 on Letterboxd. The film has been consistently praised for its depiction of dragons and features some really effective VFX shots that mix with Practical effects to make the dragons feel much realer than they have any right to be for the year 2002.
