  • Interview with Danielle Matthews

With a degree in biology from Univ. of VA, Danielle Matthews was on a path to make a difference in the world. That path was quite literally knocked off track when a drunk driver hit Danielle’s car in a head-on collision. Danielle was 23 at the time.

Living with trauma-induced brain fog, Danielle searched for a path back to health. Traditional medicine only took her so far.

Between Meditation, Acupuncture, and ASEA products, her health and focus improved dramatically. Her story is incredible and the take-aways include:

    • When you’re meditating and when you’re lost in thought, just notice, don’t engage
    • Notice what triggers you and how you choose to path of making yourself miserable
    • Consider this equation for a better life:
      • External World + Internal Response = Your Personal Reality
        • That means, be deliberate in how you choose your internal response
        • Remember:
          • I am not my thoughts
            • I can choose how to react or respond
            • I can choose to lead my own mind
            • You get to create your world from the inside out
            • Ask: What is this challenge making possible for me?
            • Engage in the NOW by doing, for no reason, no attachment to outcome. Draw, paint, etc.
            • Dive into this episode to learn about the technology of repair, how electron transfer works FOR you, and what role your expectations play.

            • Interview with Vincent Infante

Vin Infante has recreated himself. He needed to, because the alternative would be pretty dark. Bullied throughout school, he felt like his identity was one of “victim.” After all, there was enough recurring evidence to support that thinking.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he went into the mental health field. His childhood desires: to be a therapist… and to be a firefighter. Vincent got to be both. He felt as though helping others was his calling, his duty.

Self reflection pulled him from his dark space. Drawing on the Analytical Rumination Hypothesis, he found introspection for the sake of uncovering his existential discontent quite helpful. (It’s important to point out that humans have a bad habit of trying to find the reasons and meaning behind things. Attribution Theory says that we give meaning to things, even when unwarranted.)

Letting go of who we were requires mourning. I added to Vin’s comment by noting that it might be a place of celebration, as well. When you find a place of clarity about who you are and what you want - that clarity of choice - your world becomes very peaceful.

Be exceptionally honest with yourself. Honesty gives you opportunity. Many, in fact. One opportunity is to ask better questions of yourself; focus on what you want, not what you don’t have.

            • Interview with Blaine Oelkers

Known as the Chief Results Officer, Blaine Olkers gets people to think differently so that they can get more positive outcomes in their lives!

Blaine’s purpose is to help people take care of their lives by taking care of themselves.

Today’s episode highlights WYTAYBA - What you think about, you bring about. So get very clear about your thinking, what you allow in and what you must filter out.

Blaine notes that “You’re a Habit Master!” So, what habits do you want to create for yourself (and which ones do you want to eliminate)?

              Consider:

              • Habit Linking
              • Surf the Urge (use the momentum that’s there)
              • Track (use metrics)
              • Leverage Accountability for Reward or Punishment
              • Win early; Win often - start your days with a win and you’ll be setting yourself up to win throughout the day!
              • Hack the Headtrash - The solution to pollution is dilution, so pour in the positive!!!

To create a positive habit, dial down the resistance. To eliminate a negative one, give yourself 10-20 seconds of resistance.

Choose the lens that you use to view your life. (Make it positive.)

From dwarf goat farmer to business success coach… Donnie Boivin (pronounce Bo-veen) has what it takes to get s**t done.

Donnie is all about Business Freedom. He lives it and he teaches it. Here are some of the key lessons from our conversation today:

                • You’ve got to get free of employee-mindset thinking
                • You’ll come face-to-face with yourself; when that happens, you’re on the way to freedom
                • You MUST take ownership of your life.
                • Become Accountable vs. Blameful (I made that one up! Donnie liked it!)
                • Business setbacks aren’t failures, they’re to remind you to get new skills.
                • Logic might tell you to quit. You’ve got to be more stubborn than logic.
                • Again, when you get to those hard moments, you’ve got to remember that you’re in Skill Acquisition Mode!
                • YOU HAVE TO BE THE CHAMPION OF YOUR LIFE. No one else can do that for you!

                • Interview with Tyler Foley

Speaking from a place of authenticity - The Power To Speak Naked A puck to the throat doesn’t stop this speaker, author, and coach from showing up and offering some gems! Tyler’s book, The Power to Speak Naked delves into what it takes to be vulnerably authentic - and therefore quite powerful - in your story telling on stage, at networking events, or in any social gathering.

                  Key points from this episode:

                  • Leave them better than you found them
                  • Stories are powerful and available to you anytime you’re speaking
                  • To find your story, divide your life into five segmented time periods and look for the first memory from each of the designated time periods, what you learned from the experience in that memory, and what you wish you had known.
                    • Speak to the you of five-to-ten years ago
                    • From Les Brown: Never tell a story without a point and never make a point without a story
                    • Listen
                    • Solve the pain point
                    • Don’t speak from your wounds; step back and speak about the scars.
                    • It’s okay to be vulnerable; that’s not weak.
                    • You DO have a story.
                    • Give the podcast five stars, then reach out to Tyler at www.SeanTylerFoley.com or www.EndlessStages.com and you’ll get a free download of Tyler’s book, The Power to Speak Naked and you’ll be invited to Tyler’s online group, Endless Stages.

                    • Interview with Nick Gray

Why would you want to join or host a 2-hour cocktail party?

Because as adults, it’s harder to make friends. And the key to getting even just a few more friends is to build your acquaintances. Friendships come out of acquaintances.

Networking events are traditionally transactional (and not conducive to building relationships). Invite those you meet to a 2-hour (time restricted and structured) cocktail party. Hosting is a gift!

Share some bios of the people who’ll be attending to build interest.

                      Add structure.

N - Name tags put everyone on the same level and interrupt cliques.

I - Ice-breaker: what’s your name, what kind of work you do, and what’s your go-to breakfast.

C - Cocktails only - light snacks are okay. The intent is to keep it all light; no it’s not a dinner party.

K - Kick ‘em out. There’s an end time. Wind it up after two hours.

Do a quick intro ice-breaker for the early arrivals. Do an ice-breaker when the party has started. Allow for mix and mingle.

Do another structured engaging ice-breaker part way into the evening to shake things up a bit. Having structure allows for those less confident to feel safe in engaging with others. It provides for the intention of mixing and gives the excuse to meet each other.

                    • Interview with Vinnie Potestivo

This show was recorded during some storms and the internet was unstable. The freezes were beyond my control and the interview was too important to scrap. Jump in, you’ll see why!

Every so often you meet someone who you just can’t wait to talk to again. Vinnie Postesive is one of those exceptionally special people. He’s a man who simply brings out the best in others. He’s an Emmy-Award winning media advisor, a podcast host, an author, former MTV executive producer, and more than that, he’s a really great human.

We covered A LOT on our show today. Here are some key points:

                      • Levity breaks barriers (and brings lightness to the darkest moments)
                      • Transparency is a trigger word for TV - letting people in allows people to come in
                      • Clarity from the outset is important! Vin says, “the input dictates the output.”
                      • Start - Vinnie says know where to start. I’d modify that by saying know where you are so that you can start. Take inventory.
                      • Don’t do it alone - get support
                      • Creating is both internal and external
                      • Get clear about your goal
                        • Follow the Pain-Drain-Gain path
                        • Focus on Who, not How
                        • Take inspired action!
                        • Vinnie Potestivo’s superpowers include making you more shareable.

Wendy Nash reminds us to observe. Personally, I enjoyed having Wendy on the show since her message is so similar to mine and yet her approach is quite different. And that, my friends, is what makes the world go ‘round. From meditation and mindfulness to parking the ego and distractions, you’ll find good nuggets to ponder in our conversation. Listen in as Wendy addresses the concepts of meditation, ego, and compassion. Ride along as she explains the difference between compassion and “idiot compassion.” Enjoy Wendy’s take on kindness (and I chime in about the difference between “nice” and “kind.”) And be sure to reach out to Wendy at www.KindlyCutTheCrap.com Thank you for listening to One Sharp Sword! • Interview with Zach White

What can a top-talent Purdue graduate, mechanical engineer teach us about living fully? A lot. Meet Zach White whose story of how his climb for career success led to an implosion in the rest of his life.

The lessons are clear for each of us -

Along the way you’ll learn how humanity wins.

Success doesn’t come when you try to get smarter and work harder. Yes, learn. No, don’t work harder. Work to become better.

Beware of the danger of isolation. Everyone has something going on. What’s happening in your life isn’t something to shut yourself off from the world about. Shame is something you are perpetuating in yourself. Other people care. Reach out.

Burnout doesn’t happen in a moment. It happens over time as you burn more fuel than you’re receiving. You have to replenish your stores; fill up your tank so that you can give again.

Find Zach at www.TheHappyEngineerPodcast.com where you can learn more about him and his work on The Oasis of Courage.
