Ongoing Comicbook Discussion Podcast

Firefly, Volume 1 summary: “From Joss Whedon comes a new era of Firefly, as the definitive story of the Unification War is told at last! Captain Malcolm Reynolds thought he could outrun his past, but when a simple heist goes wrong, he’s forced to confront it. With the fabled Traitor of Serenity Valley in his sights, Mal’s quest for revenge will put him at odds with his own crew, forcing him to make a choice: fix the past or fight for the future. Along with Whedon, writer Greg Pak (Mech Cadet Yu, Totally Awesome Hulk, Weapon X) and artist Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd: Mega City Zero) take you back to the battleground where it all began...and reveal a secret history that might end it all.”

This week we are joined again by special guest, John Speas from the Blast From Our Past podcast to talk about Firefly Vol 1 by BOOM! Studios! This episode works as a part 2 of sorts to co-host Tess’ guest spot on John’s podcast where they reviewed the Firefly TV show and Serenity! You should definitely give that a listen too. Oh, and just a heads up: We plan on reviewing the other volumes in this series with John over the course of 2020!

We hope you all enjoy the show and make sure you check out The Blast From Our Past Podcast on Apple Podcasts & Spotify and follow them on Facebook & Instagram!

Blackbird, Volume 1 summary: “Nina Rodriguez knows there’s a hidden magical world run by ruthless cabals hiding in Los Angeles. And when a giant magic beast kidnaps her sister, Nina must confront her past (and her demons) to get her sister back and reclaim her life.”

This week on the OCD Podcast, Corey is back in the studio reviewing the beautifully illustrated Blackbird with Tess! We talk about Jen Bartel’s art a lot on this episode so if you haven’t read the comic or, at the very least seen the artwork, we suggest you check it out now (unless you’re driving). Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

Saga, Volume 1 summary: “From New York Times bestselling writer BRIAN K.VAUGHAN (Y: THE LAST MAN, EX MACHINA) and critically acclaimed artist FIONA STAPLES (MYSTERY SOCIETY, NORTH 40), SAGA is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults.”

This week on a special episode of the OCD Podcast, Tess is joined by her husband John to talk about Saga, Vol 1 by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples! Don’t worry, Corey will be back next week! This episode was his birthday present from Tess so he could have the weekend off for his birthday! Until then, enjoy this awesome conversation between Tess and John!

Woohoo :) Also, we figured we’d let John pick the book we were going to review and he went with Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues. Get ready for some head-rolling action!

This week on the OCD Podcast Tess and Corey review Harley Quinn Vol. 1: Hot in the City by Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Chad Hardin! Not only do we have fun talking about this fun character but Tess also dives into her Roller Derby background for some fun insights into the sport and the comicbook! Unlike Harley Quinn, we’re firing on all cylinders this episode!

This week on the OCD Podcast Tess and Corey review The Ultimates: Ultimate Collection by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch! This includes the first two trades, The Ultimates Vol. 1: Super-Human & Vol 2: Homeland Security.

Not only is this an origin story for the Ultimate Universe Avengers but it’s also sort of an origin story for the Marvel Cinematic Universe because (as we discuss in the episode) Marvel Studios used a lot of elements from these two stories to craft Phase One and Phase Two of the MCU! It was really fun to go back and see what they used and what they left out from The Ultimates template (Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury comes directly from this series)!

This week on OCD Podcast we review the Geoff Johns 6 issues series, Superman: Secret Origin! Corey picked this for Tess to read because it’s a great retelling of the classic Kal-El/Clark Kent origin story with an added bonus of Gary Frank making Supes look like Christopher Reeve!

Even if you know Superman’s origin like the back of your hand, this mini-series is still worth checking out! Corey and Tess absolutely loved it!
