  • Good Intentions

    We all have good intentions.

We mean to make the call, visit the friend, help someone who’s struggling, or thank the person who did something kind for us.

But sometimes we never follow through.

In this episode of Only for a Season, I talk about the difference between meaning to do something good and actually doing it. Using a simple conversation I had over coffee, along with several Bible verses, we look at why following through matters and why we shouldn’t always assume we’ll get around to it later.

Good intentions are a good place to start. But they shouldn’t always be where we stop.

  • What’s on your camera roll?

    What’s on your camera roll?

If you went back through the last year or two of pictures and videos on your phone, what would you find?

In this episode of Only for a Season, I talk about why the photos we take can become some of the most meaningful things we own as the years go by. Pictures of our spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, family gatherings, vacations, and even ordinary days can bring back memories we may have otherwise forgotten.

I also share why I believe young parents and grandparents should take the pictures, record the videos, and make sure those memories are backed up and saved.

Because someday, those pictures may feel less like photos and more like little visits with people, places, and seasons of life we can’t go back to.

  • Lifetime: An Heirloom of Love

Some things we inherit are worth far more than money.

In this episode, I share the story of a set of Lifetime cookware that belonged to my mom, pots and pans she used for decades to prepare meals for our family. After she passed away, they became ours.

Every time Ruth or I use them, they bring back memories of Mom, her kitchen, her hands preparing meals, and the care she put into even the ordinary things.

But this story is about more than cookware. It’s about family, tradition, the passing of responsibility from one generation to the next, and the quiet ways love continues long after someone is gone.

It also made me think about Ruth and the role she now carries as the matriarch of our family, continuing the hospitality and family traditions my mom once held so closely.

Sometimes the things that last a lifetime are the things we never realized we were passing down.

  • Who’s Looking Into Your Cup?

How many real friends do you actually have?

Not acquaintances. Not people you see at church, at the gym, or through a hobby. I mean the kind of friend you can call when life gets hard, someone you can be honest with, pray with, and trust.

In this episode, I talk about friendship between men, how those circles often get smaller as we get older, and why having even one or two close friends can be a real gift.

I also share a thought that has stayed with me:

A true friend doesn’t look into your cup to see if you have more than they do. They look to make sure you have enough.

We’ll look at friendship, comparison, loyalty, and what Scripture says about being there for one another.

And maybe the most important question isn’t, “Do I have a friend like that?”

Maybe it’s, “Am I that kind of friend?”

  • When Fear Took Over

In 1998, fear took over my life.

A serious health warning triggered anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. I struggled to sleep, think clearly, work, or enjoy the things around me. What began as fear soon became a storm that affected every part of my life.

In this episode, I share the personal testimony I recently gave to a small group of men. I talk about the people God placed in my path, including a mailman named Arvin who stopped, prayed for me, and helped me go back to the basics of who I was in Christ and who God truly was.

The storm did not disappear overnight, but God began helping me see that He was still there in the middle of it.

This is a story about fear, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, prayer, friendship, and the power of one person being willing to stand in the gap.

Whatever season you are facing, you do not have to walk through it alone.

  • The Marriage Covenant and Wedding Vows

In this episode of Only for a Season, I’m joined by Luis Martinez, a Minister and Elder at House of Praise, who has been married for nearly 50 years and has officiated weddings. Together, we talk about the marriage covenant from a Christian biblical view, why couples should not enter marriage lightly, how two families become connected through marriage, and what the traditional marriage vows truly mean.

This conversation is for engaged couples, dating couples seriously thinking about marriage, and anyone who wants to better understand marriage as a sacred covenant before God.

The wedding is one day, but the covenant is for life.

Luis highly recommends this book for couples planning marriage - The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman

  • Katelynne’s Side of the Story - Grandchildren Near and Far

This episode is a special edited version of a heartfelt conversation I had with my oldest granddaughter, Katelynne, about what it means to love family across the miles.

When I first recorded this conversation, I thought the story was mostly about how Ruth and I felt as grandparents when our grandchildren moved far away. But after listening again, I realized the deeper story was Katelynne’s. Her words helped me understand what distance felt like from the grandchild’s side.

In this episode, we talk about missing everyday moments, staying connected through phone calls and visits, the importance of being intentional, and the kind of love that distance cannot take away.

For grandparents with grandchildren who live far away, I believe this conversation will encourage you to keep reaching out, keep loving, and keep building memories in every season.

  • As for Me and My House

In this heartfelt episode of Only for a Season, Mel reflects on a small plaque that hung in his childhood kitchen on West 43rd Street in Cleveland, Ohio. It read, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

That simple message became more than words on a wall. Through the quiet example of his parents praying, reading Scripture, and faithfully living out their faith, Mel saw what it meant to build a Christian home.

This episode is an encouragement to young parents to let their children see their faith in everyday life, and a reminder to older parents with wayward children to keep praying, keep believing, and never lose hope.

The seeds planted in faith are never wasted.
