  • Mowdy Ranch - Coalgate, Oklahoma
    We ain't horsin' around!   Today we are discussing the Mowdy Ranch in Coalgate, Oklahoma.   Mowdy Ranch is Oklahoma's only Bureau of Land Management Public Off-Range Pasture for wild mustangs and one of only four such ranches in the United States. Located in the beautiful hills of southeastern Oklahoma, 10 miles northeast of Coalgate on Highway 31, this 4,000 acre ranch is home to nearly 400 wild horses or "mustangs."   Originally known as Liddle and located in the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation, Coalgate, the county seat of Coal County.  The town began as a coal-mining camp in 1889 and at its height was shipping almost 30 carloads of coal per day. The town's name was changed from Liddle to Coalgate on January 23, 1890. A popular legend holds that the town was named after Colgate Hoyt, a MK&T director. Apparently, however, the name was taken from the steel gate or "coal gate" that separated the trains from the coal mines north of town.   Street art in Oklahoma City is the best in nation, USA Today says.   Oklahoma City embodies the Modern Frontier and defines its own future. Highlights at the annual event will include carnival rides, live entertainment, games, arts and crafts, exhibits and hometown food stands.   The Town of Mountain View was born as a "tent city" in Washita County, and grew up as a permanent community in Kiowa County. In 1897, the railroad built a roundhouse here so the trains could turn around to return to Chickasha. Standing on that site in 1898, railroad officials suggested the name "Mountain View".   Oklahoma City's Horror Con is a Horror themed, family-friendly event! The town was named for US Senator, Joseph L. Bristow and is now located on historic Route 66.   Savor four days of hilarity when the Blue Whale Comedy Festival takes over the Tulsa Arts District. Held at several different venues, this district-wide festival brings together some of the sharpest minds from all spectrums of underground comedy, including stand-up, improv, film, podcasting and music.   Tulsa is a city on the Arkansas River. It’s known for its art deco architecture, mostly in the central Deco District.   • Watermelon Festival - Rush Springs, Oklahoma
    Is watermelon a fruit or a vegetable?   Today we are discussing the Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs, Oklahoma with Miss Taylor Abbott, the 2022 Watermelon Queen and Mary Hill the chairman of the festival.   The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival is an annual event celebrating the rush of local seasonal watermelons with watermelon-themed activities, carnival rides and family friendly entertainment. The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival has been an annual event since 1948, and has grown to over 20,000 festival-goers each year! The event will feature a seed-spitting contest, an arts and craft fair featuring over 100 vendors, carnival rides, live entertainment, stage shows, on-site food vendors and a classic automotive show.   Rush Springs, OK Rush Springs has a tight knit and welcoming community. The town is best known for their Watermelon Festival and considers itself the Watermelon Capital of the World. During the Great Depression, a Civilian Conservation Corps project was initiated on the east side of Rush Springs to provide employment and improve the region. Young men were paid to construct terraces and ponds and to restore vegetation by replanting trees.   The Rush Springs Lions Club was chartered on July 12, 1932. The Rush Springs Lions Club is a charter chapter of Lions International, the largest service club organization in the world.   The Tulsa Zoo is 85 acres and is located in Mohawk Park. The zoo houses a wealth of wildlife animals including African Lions, penguins, alligators, flamingos, elephants, monkies, bobcats, and much more.   • Blue River - Tishamingo, Oklahoma
    Are you ready for the rapids?   Today we are discussing the Blue River in Tishamingo, Oklahoma.   Beginning near Connerville in Johnston County, the Blue River flows southeast to the Red River. This spring-fed river has a designated trout area in the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area. Other fishing opportunities exist for black bass, crappie, as well as channel and blue catfish. Camping facilities are available only at the Blue River Campground.   Float trip opportunities by kayak are available on this Class II-III river, offering several falls and ledges, dependent on seasonal waterfall. No commercial outfitters along the river are allowed and public access points are limited. Supplies and information can be found at Scotty's Blue River One Stop, located at the entrance to the public hunting and fishing area. A Blue River Conservation Passport is required of all persons who enter or use the Blue River area, unless exempt. Check with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department for availability and criteria.   Tishomingo, Oklahoma is the Chickasaw Nation's historic capital and heart of Blue River. Explore the Chickasaw influence by visiting the Chickasaw Council House Museum and the Chickasaw National Capitol Building. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful Blue River, a trout-fishing destination and home to the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge. Guests can sleep in comfort with a stay at Cedar & Stone Bed and Breakfast and explore plenty of antiques at Junk Stars during their trip.   • Lake Wister State Park - Wister, Oklahoma
    Do you camp like a pro?   Today we are discussing Lake Wister State Park in Wister, Oklahoma.   A gateway to the beautiful Ouachita National Forest, Lake Wister State Park in southeast Oklahoma offers five camping areas around the 115 miles of scenic shoreline. This outdoor haven offers park visitors a variety of activities including hiking, camping, biking, boating and water skiing on the 7,300 surface acres of Lake Wister. As an added bonus, the park is also equipped with a water spray park, a popular destination for children and adults alike. Nestled in a ring of pine and oak covered mountains: the Sans Bois, Jackforks, Kiamichis and Ouachitas, lodging facilities at Lake Wister State Park include 15 cabins, RV sites with full hook-ups or some with water and electric only, and tent sites. All RV and tent sites must be reserved online. Book one of the 15 cozy cabins within the park and enjoy lake or park view cabins complete with stone-framed fireplaces and easy access to hiking trails. The park's one or two-bedroom cabins, surrounded by groves of dogwood, wild cherry and northern spruce, accommodate four to six guests and feature one to two queen-size beds in each bedroom with linens, sleeper sofas and a 32-inch flat screen TV. Each cabin also comes complete with kitchen, restroom with shower and air conditioning. Please keep in mind that dishes and cookware are no longer stocked in the cabins. Two cabins have accessible main and bathroom entrances, and pets are welcome to stay in a select number of cabins at the park for a daily pet fee. Lake Wister State Park also offers a fully-equipped group camp that can accommodate up to 100 visitors and includes a full kitchen and dining hall. Lake Wister State Park welcomes wildlife watchers, nature photographers and anyone wishing to escape into the great outdoors. Hunters will enjoy the nearby Wister Wildlife Management Area. A waterfowl area is also located within close proximity to the park. The Poteau River, Oklahoma's only river that flows north, feeds into Lake Wister along with the Fourche Maline and a half dozen or more mountain streams provided fresh cool water perfect for fishing. An abundance of northern bluegill, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, smallmouth and largemouth bass are available for the angler.  Facilities at the park include comfort stations with showers, picnic tables, group picnic shelters, lighted boat ramps, an unlighted gravel ramp, playgrounds and a swimming beach. Challenge friends and family to a round of miniature golf at the park's miniature golf course. Hiking trails include a self-guided nature trail and a 6.4-mile hiking trail that takes visitors into the surrounding wilderness to view wildlife such as deer, ducks and rabbits. During the winter months, wintering golden and bald eagles can be seen soaring overhead.   Wister is located in central Leflore County and in the northern portion of the Ouachita National Forest near Lake Wister, US Highways 271 and 270 pass through the town. McAlester is located 55 miles almost due west, and the Oklahoma-Arkansas border lies 20 miles east of Wister. Give the Don a try and load up with Canadian bacon, sliced Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, New York sauce, beef, pepperoni, black olives, fresh mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. The Spring Chicken features basil pesto and diced white chicken, while the White Pizza comes generously dolloped with ricotta, pecorino, romano, parmesan and mozzarella cheese and alfredo sauce.
