God’s righteousness can terrify guilty people. Romans 1:16-17 changed Luther’s fear into joy by showing that God saves sinners through Christ, where justice and mercy meet. This gospel brings dead hearts to life and belongs to everyone who believes, whatever their culture or background. Faith receives more than pardon: Christ bears the believer’s sin and gives His perfect record, freeing Christians to trust this good news, treasure it, and share it without shame.

Hardship can make life feel uncontrolled and God's purposes hard to see. Yet God promised eternal life before time began and made Jesus' sacrifice for His people's sins the heart of His redemption plan. He will complete His purposes when Jesus returns. God's word remains trustworthy even when His eternal ways exceed human understanding. His grace strengthens faith, teaches His people to reject ungodliness, and produces hopeful, godly lives.

Advertising trains people to feel incomplete without the next product, relationship, or status symbol. The tenth commandment reaches beneath outward behaviour to expose coveting as discontent with God’s care and a form of idolatry. The diagnosis is not the final word. Because Christ makes sinners right with God and cannot be taken from them, contentment can grow in plenty or need. Trust in His provision frees His people to pursue His commands.

Fear grows when threats become larger in our minds than God. In Isaiah 41, God tells His chosen people not to fear because He is with them, strengthening, helping, and holding them. Peter walks on water while looking to Jesus, then sees the wind and begins to sink, but Jesus reaches out and saves him. God’s presence does not remove every threat. Through His obedience and death, Jesus secured salvation and conquered death itself, freeing His people to fear God and speak truth without fearing others.

A careless lie can spread like fire, damaging relationships for years. The ninth commandment reaches beyond courtrooms because false words harm neighbours, obstruct justice, and can unsettle whole communities. No one can tame the tongue alone. Jesus, the faithful and true witness, was condemned by false witnesses and bore falsehood’s curse on the cross. His forgiveness cleans guilty hearts, enabling His people to forgive each other and speak truth in love.

Stealing reaches far beyond burglary into ordinary choices about money and work. God condemns predatory lending and dishonest business, whether employers withhold fair wages or employees withhold honest work. His command exposes the heart, but Jesus died between two thieves in the place of commandment breakers, and His grace changes what the heart treasures. Like Zacchaeus, they can make things right, do their work honestly and share generously with people in need.

Lust can hide in a look or imagined act long before physical unfaithfulness occurs. Jesus says adultery begins in the heart. David’s lingering gaze then grows into adultery and abuse of power, followed by deceit and murder. Purity requires deliberate boundaries and daily godly choices, along with care for others and honest accountability. David’s prayer in Psalm 51 points guilty people to Jesus, who washes them clean as they fix their eyes on Him and keep fighting sin.

Human worth cannot rest on intelligence, ability, age, or usefulness. God gives every person equal dignity because He made humanity in His image, yet Jesus traces murder into angry words, hatred, and hidden resentment. This command therefore protects life and seeks a neighbour’s good, while exposing every heart as guilty. At the cross, the murdered and sinless Saviour bears lawbreakers’ punishment, bringing those who trust Him mercy, eternal life, and a transformed heart.

Honouring parents can feel difficult when they are flawed, frustrating or deeply hurtful. Yet the fifth commandment connects honour for God with respect for parents and others in authority, while never requiring disobedience to God's law. Parents must also live honourably, patiently teaching rather than provoking their children, while shared respect supports healthy families and stable societies. Jesus fulfilled this command where sinners fail. He submitted to His earthly parents and obeyed His heavenly Father through the cross, so His perfect obedience covers His people and reshapes their lives with honour.

Work easily takes over life, while rest can become another master. God set apart one day in seven so people could stop, delight in His creation, meet with Him, and protect a healthy rhythm of work and rest. Sin turns good work into toil and distorts both labour and leisure, making either one an idol. Sunday celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, but no day can restore God’s complete rest. Through faith in Jesus, sinners receive forgiveness and the true Sabbath rest of life with God.
