For diagnosis of any pathology insitu, imaging is the most important tool. For diagnosing retinal pathologies, retinal imaging has played a very critical role. It started with introduction of FFA in early 60’s and after a 3 decade hiatus a pathbreaking technology-OCT was introduced in early 90’s.

Worldwide and especially in a developing nation like ours, it has assumed gigantic proportions leading to major burden on individual patients and society at large. As an ophthalmologist we deal with diabetic patients or rather, one of its complications routinely, Diabetic retinopathy. This is a difficult disease to manage from public health perspective. It remains silent in the background and when it does manifest, through vision debility, it is a challenge to manage in many patients, given its social/psychological & financial implications.

Given the systematic nature of this disease, DR needs team management, apart from eye care professionals, diabetologist/physician/GP, nutritional experts but most importantly participation of society at large.

Research forms bedrock of progress. Medicine in general has advanced only because tremendous research work done by dedicated clinicians/scientists over the centuries. The recent pandemic & subsequent vaccines development is a testament of that.

Ophthalmology is a dynamic evolving specialty with lots of research work in various subspecialty.

In this episode me and my cohost Dr Priti Kamdar talk to 3 very eminent clinician-scientists from India on there views about where does research in ophthalmology stand in India and what more can be done to take it further.

We have Dr Barun Nayak, who is immediate past President of AIOS. An accomplished glaucoma & cataract surgeon practicing in Mumbai at P D Hinduja Hospital as HOD for last 4 decades, he also served as Editor, IJO for 6 years. So in essence he has a birds eye view of research in our speciality over last many decades. He did hid PG training at AIIMS, New Delhi and a Glaucoma Fellowship in Perth, Australia.

We also have Dr Lingam Gopal. An accomplished vitreo retinal surgeon, who built his carrier at Sankara Netralaya, Chennai. He then shifted base to Singapore at the National University Hospital, Singapore, where he did some fundamental research in vitreoretina. He now serves both institutes as a clinician-scientists. He also did Master in Public Health from London School of Tropical Medicine.

The third guest is Dr Namrata Sharma. She is a professor at AIIMS, New Delhi. She specializes in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. As a full time academic she has mentored scores of PG students at arguably one of the best medical institutes in our country. She also serves as General secretary of AIOS and Regional Secretary and Research Committee member, APAO. She has 2 patents to her name.

All 3 guests have worked on many research projects and published extensively.
