Simon, the Pharisee, has invited Jesus into his home as a dinner guest. It was common for leaders to invite visiting Rabbis, or nobleman into their homes during their visit to a city or village. This would usually be considered an honor to be invited, and a greater honor to have the invitation accepted. But, in this case, the Pharisee is not inviting Jesus into his home to honor Him, nor to learn of His wisdom. This invitation was, most likely, part of the ongoing plot to gather damning evidence against the man who kept claiming to be equal with God. Initially, Simon seems pleased to have this immoral woman in his home. He did nothing to prevent her from entering. He did nothing to have her stopped or removed from the home once she began her ministry to Jesus. Rather, he gloated at this further proof that Jesus could not be a prophet, since He didn't seem to know who and what she was. In His part, Jesus wanted to use this woman's ministry as an opportunity to follow up on His judgments concerning that generation of people who resisted and resented the preaching of the Kingdom of God. During this visit, He confronts Simon with his arrogance, and illustrates for him how a transformed life responds to the salvation that has been granted, by faith. Simon's heart is unchanged. The gospel has been rejected again. The Messiah is resented. His message of salvation by faith instead of works is rejected again. How long, O Lord, will this be tolerated?
