Paul’s words in 2 Thessalonians 2 are some of the most difficult in all of Scripture, and in truth it may not be possible to know exactly what Paul was talking about. Remember that the Thessalonians brethren knew more than we do, we examine a few theories before being encouraged with some encouraging words regarding the man of lawlessness.

Paul’s instructions for greeting one another as Christians gives as an opportunity to examine when an example in Scripture is binding, and when the specifics of an example are not binding. Though the specific of the “holy kiss” might be cultural, the command to greet one another with affection is not.

Just like a watch must be set properly to make sure that we have the accurate time, our conscience must also be set to the right standard if it is going to guide us correctly. The only acceptable standard by which to “set” our conscience is the Word of God.

There are really only two kinds of doctrine: true and false. True doctrine comes from that which was spoken by eyewitnesses of Christ and the words of those inspired prophets of God. False doctrine comes from the perversion of those things, and should be avoided at all costs.

Paul’s words of encouragement for the church in Thessalonica give us comfort still today as we consider the promises of God to grant relief to his saints when Jesus returns. We also take special note of the warning against those who do not put their faith in God, who are destined for vengeance because of their failure to obey.

The fellowship of Christians requires that we give thought to, or consider, one another. We are part of a body of Christ that has many members, yet remains one body. Through being together and considering one another, we can help one another grow in Christ.

A good illustration can be helpful in understanding spiritual concepts. Perhaps that is why Jesus used so many in his teaching. In this lesson we get a picture of sin and how Satan tempts us to sin through the eyes of a fisherman, and how Satan uses many of the same tricks a fisherman uses to ensnare us in sin.

After Stephen was appointed to service in the church, he also began preaching the truth, much to the displeasure of some of the Jewish leaders of the day. Though they tried to dispute with him, they could not withstand the truth with which he spoke, so they resorted to lies.

The things written in the Old Testament are written for our learning (Rom. 15:4). The kings of Israel and Judah can teach us many lessons that have application for today. Uzziah teaches us to surround ourselves with good influences, while also warning us of the dangers of pride.

Living as a Christian isn’t always easy, and temptation is a very real challenge. But God has given us a support system in the church to help us overcome, to build us up, help us stay on the right path, and encourage us when times are tough. We need to encourage one another.
