We live in an age where violence and mistreatment of others almost seems commonplace. We too often are desensitized to the evils that are committed around us. But let us give our attention to the words of Jesus, and beware that we also do not give in to attitudes that promote such violence.

One thing the Scripture teaches us about God is that He is trustworthy. If God promises to do something, we can be sure that he will follow through. We see such promises carried out when he promised curses on Israel if they would not obey his covenant, and also when he promised to restore them after their exile. And in the New Covenant he promises eternal life to the faithful, and eternal punishment to the wicked.

There is no question from Scripture that there is an expectation of God’s people that they should grow and mature. In the story of Jonah, though the prophet tries to run from God at first, he eventually relents and does what God has commanded. But as we read in the beginning of Jonah 4, he wasn’t happy about it, nor of how God responded to Nineveh’s repentance. Jonah had no love for the lost, and had no desire that God should give them a chance to repent. May it be a warning to God’s people today.

“Thus Says the Lord” is a phrase found over 400 times in the Old Testament, most of the time in the prophets. It is a reminder that when God speaks, we should listen. And in Deuteronomy 8, we find a number of promises from God that he will fulfill if we feast on his word.

This is a continuation of a class from June 16, in which we are considering the visions that make up most of the first six chapters of the book of Zechariah. In this week’s lesson we examine the 3, 4th, and 5th visions.
