In Zechariah 9 there are several descriptors of how God relates to his people. Under the New Covenant, these same descriptions can be applied to the church.

A continuation of a discussion that began the previous week as we consider how we understand and follow apostolic authority. Though some things are expressly commanded or made plain in an example, at other times we must use our God given ability to reason to reach appropriate conclusions about what is expected.

In John 7-8 we find Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. The traditions around that feast may have prompted some of the teachings that Jesus gives during that time, and it paves the way for John to show us the division that people had trying to figure out the truth about Jesus.

The church must make sure that it continues to preach the truth about sin. We do this not to demean or condemn, but to show love by teaching people how to be saved in Jesus Christ. In preaching against certain sins, however, we must also be mindful of those sins that might be easier to fall into. One such example is the sin of pride, which is addressed in the early verses of the short book of Obadiah.

Apostolic authority is understood by recognizing what has been written in the Scriptures. This doesn’t only include direct commands, but in recognizing examples that are to be imitated, and making appropriate inferences based on what is written.

Concluding our discussion of John 5-6, as we consider Jesus’ words following the feeding of the 5000. In this passage the Lord teaches us that in order to have eternal life, we must depend completely on him for that life.

We seem to preach and teach on the subject of prayer a lot, but it is a much needed topic, and one that is covered throughout the New Testament. From Paul’s words in Colossians 4:2-4, let us learn 5 lessons about prayer as we study God’s Word together.

Even as God warned of judgement against Israel in Hosea 1, he promised to preserve and deliver the kingdom of Judah. In the same way today, though we know that God will render judgement against the wicked, he has promised to deliver and save the church.

In seeking to understand the Apostles’ Doctrine, it is important to understand how that doctrine is established. One way to do this is by looking for the direct commands given in the New Testament, and seeking to understand how they apply to the church today.

Jesus’ miracle of feeding the 5000 is recorded in all four gospels, but it is only in John’s gospel that we get the following discourse in which Jesus declares himself to be the Bread of Life. This week we consider the miracle itself (along with Jesus walking on water later that night).
