Paul writes from prison to a church panicking about him and tells them his chains are advancing the gospel. Five things follow: put the gospel first, share one spirit, refuse fear, suffer well, and place yourself second. Gospel first also works as a pause button in an argument.

Some desires can never be fulfilled: control, a different past, a decision already made. Carrying them is what keeps a person in victimhood, and Paul refused that posture from prison. When a week turns violent and the temptation is to answer in anger, the response Jesus modeled was to pray for the ones doing harm.

Paul opens his letter by telling the Philippians he thanks God every time he remembers them. That kind of affection does not come from sitting in rows facing forward. Community worth having is biblically rooted, emotionally fulfilling, and productive at the same time, and most of us settle for one of the three.

David was told he would not build the temple, and he could have spent the rest of his life mourning that one no. Instead he gathered materials for his son. Legacy is spiritual before it is financial, and the temple now is a body filled by the Spirit rather than a building in Jerusalem.

Noah built the ark and his whole household came aboard with him. One person's faithfulness sets the direction for everyone downstream, and the research on which family member believes first is not subtle. Building a home where God comes first is how the baton actually gets passed.

Philadelphia was small and Jesus had nothing but commendation for it. Faith, not numbers, is what he was after, the way Gideon's army got cut to three hundred. Those who hold on become pillars and receive a new name, which means the old one, whatever it was, does not have to follow us.

Sardis had a reputation for being alive and was told to wake up. Nominal faith likes Christ and declines the cross, even though he named that cost at the start. Suffering is what produces endurance and character. Repentance today can still leave a remnant of faith five generations out.
