Order of Battle Podcast episode 77

Josh Eggebeen returns to Order of Battle to talk After Action Report! With Roger still on the mend, Josh brought along Greg Agustin to the discussion. Jason and Joel hungrily ask about volume two updates and Josh kind obliged. 

Volume three goes to Kickstarter on 1 November. It’s an IDW Larry Hama 155.5 to 300 focused issue with the standard tons of extras, interviews, tidbits, and updates on the previous volumes. The team has slightly changed. Roger is writing less but still managing the format. Skinny Joefan and Brian Sauer have also provided details to the book. 

But volume three isn’t the only bit of news! Greg has joined the AAR team with his Command Files project, brining 40 years of various dossiers and files into a combined portfolio of over 200 Joes. He and Josh are announcing the project in preparation for a January Kickstarter. The art and style looks great.

His good guy concept is Sol Eagle Guerrero, a Puerto Rican/Mexican wrestler and heavy hitting badass. The bad guy offering has been earmarked as the Megatron or Iron Claw of the Operation Recall villain team: General Mortifero! 

David and Jason deep dive into growing up in the Caribbean, designing art and toys, food, philosophy, languages, taking risks, and more. David’s enthusiasm is infectious and his ideas are based in fun and play first. Their talk meanders and wanders but always gets back to Operation Recall.

Returning to Order of Battle, Brian and Paddy met up with the boys to reveal updates to their Total Action Force volume two and for their Skeletron’s Total Roboskull books! 

They took the time to discuss growing up with Action Force becoming GIJoe, deep diving through archives and public offices, hunting information 35 years lost, and so much more. And on top of all of that, their work in Star Wars and trying to get published in that arena too! 

These two are delightful, incredibly insightful collectors and archivists. They build a beautiful product chalked full of obscure details and gorgeous photography. Jason and Joel have talked many times about the high level of information and product within the GIJoe community; Brian and Paddy continue to raise the bar.

Order of Battle Podcast special episode Operation Recall - Night Raid and Ozzie

Jason was in Atlanta for Joelanta, a second show for the spring held Toylanta main show. While there he was able to gather the dream team of Chris Scott, Los Castigadores (IG: @the_punisher_magfed), Don Koehne (IG: @elitecobra2000), and Mark Gerwing of Mark2Design Toys (IG: @mark2design). 

At 2am in the hotel lobby, while Jason was making sure another collector was ok, this dream team interviewed returning guest JE Russell. Russell’s character concept, Night Raid and Ozzie, was selected as one of the original 16 Operation Recall designs by the Legendary Design team. Ron Rudat himself has been working on the ideations to bring this character to life. 

Chris, John, and crew, in Jason’s absence, discussed Oswald, the best of buddies, how Night Raid gives off serious Oktober Guard vibes, and their enjoyment of the Operation Recall project. Russell is no stranger to toy design, as the co-owner of Chicken Fried Toys, the company that produces a beautiful western themed 4” modern action figure line: Dime Novel Legends. He’s also familiar with ideating from real people and their thoughts on design. You may have seen Keone Young, the voice of Storm Shadow, at shows tabling with CFT this summer. 

This turned out to be a fun conversation and a doozy for Jason to edit. Thanks to everyone who made it happen over beers, yawns, a lot of laughter, and inappropriate jokes.
